Dear parents/guardians,
we decided to postpone this event until a later date. We are terribly sorry if anyone has been training intensely for this weekend, we will complete it, but we feel Students and Parents have been so generous with donations in last few days, that it is best to space this event out.

Letter from the principal and updated diary

Dear Parent/Guardian,
We hope that this letter finds you all well. We are writing to you around a range of school areas.
Covid restrictions
As you all know, the Government has accepted the recommendations of NPHET to remove remaining restrictions relating to mask-wearing and physical distancing in schools. As a result, it is no longer a requirement for secondary school students to wear a mask in school. Our staff and students can continue to wear a mask if they wish to do so. This is very much a personal decision and each individual’s decision will be respected. We will continue to make medical grade masks available on request. In addition to this, the general requirement for physical distancing no longer applies which means that, where appropriate, we will now be able to facilitate more pair and group work during lessons where appropriate.
Ventilation
There will be no change to our use of CO2 monitors, currently installed in every classroom. Likewise, all classrooms will continue to operate with windows open throughout the day. Windows and doors are fully opened in the morning, at the end of the day and when students are not in the classroom. The windows are partially open during class time. Our heating is fully on in order to try and maintain heat in the room. Staff will continue to adjust windows and doors during periods of cold weather to maintain an appropriate balance between ventilation and comfort levels. Hopefully this will become easier as we progress through spring. We do still encourage all students to wear a base layer to school and warm outer garments. We would greatly appreciate your support in making sure that your child arrives to school wearing appropriately warm clothing thus ensuring that they arrive, ready to learn.
Hand Hygiene
Our school will continue to promote good hygiene with hand sanitiser stations located outside every classroom and also in every individual classroom.
Staying at home if your child has symptoms
The requirement to stay at home if your child has symptoms remains. One of the key messages to manage the risks of COVID-19 is for us all to do everything practical to avoid the introduction of COVID-19 into our school. We would really appreciate if you could remain vigilant in monitoring your child for any symptoms of COVID-19. If your child displays any symptoms of COVID-19, please contact your GP and do not send them to school.
Conflict in Ukraine
We have all been appalled by the invasion of Ukraine and HCETSS stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people at this most difficult time. In particular, our thoughts are with the members of our school community who have family and friends in Ukraine. In terms of what we can do, we are approaching this crisis in terms of student learning to be gained and actions which can be carried out.
Over the next two weeks, in History, Geography and CSPE lessons, students will learn about the current crisis from a geopolitical, historical and humanitarian viewpoint. In addition to this, from now until Friday 11th March, our school will act as a drop off point for any students who wish to make a humanitarian donation. We have informed all students of where the drop off point is located (inside our learning support classroom) and when items can dropped off (8.05am – 8.20am and 12.27pm – 1.02pm).
Items that can be donated include: blankets, sleeping bags, toothpaste, toothbrushes, towels, sanitary towels, tampons, disposable plates and cutlery, baby wipes, gloves and face masks, sterile dressings, first aid bandages, nappies and incontinence pads for adults, power banks, pet food for cats and dogs, batteries and noise-cancelling headphones. Any donation, no matter how small, will be hugely appreciated. The donated items will be collected after school on Friday 11th March and couriered by Green Speed to Poland to be then handed out to Ukrainian refugees crossing the border into Poland.

Eating in class
Following a review and feedback from our student council, we have made some changes to our lunchtime routine. Students are now permitted to spend the first 18 minutes (12.27pm – 12.45pm) of their lunch break indoors in their base classroom to eat their lunch. At 12.45pm, weather permitting, all students are required to move outside to our playing yard or one of our outdoor student social areas.
Survey
We have drawn up a parent/guardian survey to help us gather feedback on a number of areas relating to parent/guardian experience of our school. You will receive the survey link in a separate communication. We would greatly appreciate if you could complete this survey by 8th March. Your feedback will prove invaluable to us as we complete our 2021-2022 review and start to plan for 2022-2023.
Mobile phone reminder
Thank you all for your continued support with our mobile phone policy. Over a year and a half, we have had a tiny number of issues with mobile phone usage. We reminded all students in our assembly on Monday last that mobile phones are not permitted anywhere on the school campus, inside the green gates. Students are required to switch off their phones in school and either leave in their bag or lock away in their locker. They should not keep their phone on their person. If a student is found to be using their mobile phone, it will be confiscated, locked away and returned to them at the end of the school day. They will also receive 2 minus points on the Vs Ware points system upon which a number of our school awards are based upon. In the event of a second offence, the phone will be confiscated, locked away but a parent/guardian will be required to collect the phone in person during school hours.
To date, no parent/guardian has had to come into our school to collect a confiscated phone and we are committed to supporting our students’ behaviour to ensure that this remains the same. At no time do any of our students require the use of a phone in school. iPads are the only technology to be used by students to research topics, create presentations, access Schoolwise, Office 365 etc. If you wish to contact your child, please call the school office. Similarly, if your child wishes to contact you during the school day, the school phone is always available to them. Please discuss this policy with your child to ensure that there is full clarity around our shared expectations.
Calendar Updated
We have been contacted by the Junior Cycle for Teachers (JCT) support team to inform us of our whole school staff training day. This training will take place on Monday 16th May and will mean that there will be no lessons for students that day. The areas that our school team will explore as part of this training day will be subject department planning using a variety of learning outcomes, highly effective student assessment techniques and universal design for learning. Please see updated school diary which has a few other small changes and for second year students, our classroom-based assessments (CBA’s) calendar.
Student Absences
We are very much aware that as things open up, many families may wish to plan trips to visit family members overseas whom they may not have seen for a considerable amount of time. We would greatly appreciate that if you are taking your child out of school for an extended period of time, i.e. 5 or more school days, please email office@hcetss.ie in advance so that all of your child’s teachers are aware of the planned absence. This will enable our teachers to adjust lesson plans accordingly in terms of group formation of students, project tasks etc. Please continue to notify the school on the day of absence via our school app. Please be aware that, in spite of Covid, all schools are still legally required to inform Tusla in writing of any student who is absent for 20 or more school days, regardless of reason for absence.
Community Day
We are busy planning for our inaugural Community Day which will take place on Saturday 26th March from 10.00am – 1.00pm. We hope to have a number of students helping out of the day with tours of our school, demonstrations of practical work/experiments and presenting around various areas of our school. Please speak to your child to see if they have signed up to work with a particular teacher on the day, just to avoid you being informed about it for the first time, on the morning of 26th March! Thank you to all of you who have helped to spread the word. It’s shaping up to be a really special day and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there on the day.
Supervision
In terms of supervision, we have daily supervision of students from 8.05am – 8.20am, during the school day and 15 minutes after the last lesson finishes. Please note that if your child is not involved in an extra-curricular club/training after school, they must exit the school campus within the 15 minutes of supervision after last class finishes. Unfortunately, due to insurance reasons, students are not permitted to remain on the school campus at the end of the school day, after the 15 minutes of school supervision has ended.
As always, thank you for your continued support for and commitment to our school.
Best wishes,
Pádraig Conaty
