The School of Irish Archaeology visited Dominican College this week with their replica ‘Viking House’ and excavation site, which allowed our students to explore the Viking world through a simulated archaeology dig. The workshop gave our girls the chance to experience what it is like to be an archaeologist by learning how to excavate the remains of a Viking house. As they dug through the site, participants unearthed Viking treasures and artefacts dating back 1,000 years. They learned about the lives of our Viking ancestors as history was brought to life by qualified archaeologists. This unique educational workshops offered a unique experience that will leave our future generations fascinated by our ancient ancestors and eager to learn more. Here is a clip of the Big Dig equipment and team. www.youtube.com/watch?v=szpEufCt2eA And their website sia.ie/ Well done to all involved and thank you to Ms. Ni Bhraonain for organising the event.

“Creating Our Future”.

Dear Parents/Guardians, You may have heard of the Government of Ireland campaign “Creating Our Future”. The idea is that members of the public engage in a dialogue on research and to submit their ideas on what they would like researchers to explore. The ideas can be anything from the environment and technology to arts and humanities. You can find all the details on www.creatingourfuture.ie. The Government is very keen to hear from children and parents throughout the country. Parents/teachers are encouraged to talk about research topics with children and then to submit ideas that come up. Every idea will be reviewed by a panel of experts it will go towards a final report to Cabinet as well as a book of inspiration for researchers. This is a great initiative for encouraging input from our children on the future they wish to see for themselves and promotes critical thinking and citizenship skills. It would be a great way for the entire family to spend some time together this weekend.
