Carlow Open Day Debating Competition: The CIT Open Day Debating Competition took place on Thursday 15th November. Twenty eight teams were involved this year. Caoimhe Coady (5th year) and Isabella Ní Chonaill (3rd year) and substitute Lorriané O Rourke (3rd year) proudly represented Coláiste Bhríde. The team opposed the preliminary motion: ‘This house believes that the construction industry is not doing enough to tackle homelessness in our towns and cities’. They successfully defeated the motion and advanced on to the semi final. In this round, they had to propose the motion: ‘This house believes that the construction industry should lead the way in tackling climate change globally’. They delivered outstanding speeches with style and conviction, securing themselves a well deserved place in the final. They were given just thirty minutes to prepare for the final debate, proposing the motion: ‘This house believes that recent reports around structural issues in schools is confined to the past’. The girls were once again magnificent, but unfortunately they were narrowly defeated by Tallaght Community College, after a very interesting and enjoyable debate. Congratulations and well done to the girls.

What a day! A bus load of excited students (and teachers) made the trip to the RDS today for Zeminar 2018. We met with many individuals from various youth organisations throughout the country and we even bumped in to some past pupils representing these groups. Fun was had and new friends were made. The highlight for most was the Main Stage talk given by Cora Staunton and Panti Bliss. Cora, is a multi All-Ireland winning Mayo footballer and the first international female Aussie Rules player. Her story was very moving and the struggles she has overcome, including losing her own mother at the age of 16, were nothing short of inspiring! Her overall message was to embrace the bad things that happen to us along the way. They are part of our journey and help make us who we are. These situations also help us appreciate the good when it comes along. Panti Bliss exploded onto the stage with the message “Be Yourself - Everyone else is taken”. She encouraged all present to embrace their inner misfit. Dare to be different, stay interesting as these are the people who succeed in life.
Coláiste Bhríde Carnew 2-1 Ramsgrange Community School

The Carnew girls’ soccer team continued their strong start to the season in an exciting game vs. Ramsgrange Community School in Arklow. Building on their impressive performance last week, the girls started very strongly, pushing the pace from the start. In a tight first half, opportunities were few and far between but captain Shauna Rochford was commanding in midfield, preventing any major chances. Carnew fell behind two minutes before halftime when a long range shot crept under the cross bar. Despite this, the ladies’ heads did not drop and they continued to work hard in the second half. Their reward came when a free was awarded 15 yards outside the box and Hannah Redmond stepped up, scoring with an excellent long range shot. The rain began to fall heavily but the team continued pushing the pace and with five minutes remaining, a scramble in the box from a corner was poked home by Redmond for her second goal of the game. Despite coming under pressure from an excellent Ramsgrange, the team defended stoically and saw out the remainder of the game. There were strong performances all over the pitch including Shauna Rochford, Hannah Doyle and Laci Shannon, but Player of the Match goes to Hannah Redmond for a strong performance and two well taken goals. The standard of the opposition continues to be very high, but Carnew are showing that they are a match for anyone, and will hope to continue their good run against Creagh College next week. Thanks to Ramsgrange for an excellent game and we wish them the best of luck in their future games.
