On Tuesday, November 27th, Colaiste Bhride was delighted to be awarded the "Wellread" Award. This award is organised by the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) and aims to create a culture of reading for pleasure among participating schools. Our school signed up to the program in early 2017 and much work has taken place over the past two years to secure the award. We built on the many wonderful literacy initiatives already in place e.g. Drop Everything and Read and our Spelling Bee and introduced items such as keyword noticeboards for all departments, we rebranded our spelling bee to 'Lets Spellebrate' and opened it to all KWETB schools. One of the biggest projects undertaken was the renovation of our library. This was a challenging task that was completed over a number of phases. We had our official opening in May 2018 and the library has since become the heart of our school and a welcoming space for our students. We learned in June 2018 that we had secured the award, which we will hold from 2018 - 2020. We will reapply for the award in 2020. The awards ceremony took place in the Citywest Hotel on a wet and dreary Tuesday morning. Even the weather could not dampen the level of enthusiasm and excitement in the room as twenty schools proudly accepted their award. Ciara O'Donnell - National Director of the PDST, addressed the room and spoke at length about the importance of engaging students and how much better students learn when they are engaged and empowered. She highlighted the importance of fostering traits such as innovation, reading for pleasure and poetry writing and stressed how invaluable these aspects are although they cannot be measured. When awarding prizes for poetry, she stressed the importance of poetry which allows students to find their own voices and gives students the power and courage to share their emotions. She spoke with great passion and then invited winners of the PDST national poetry competition to share their poems. Ciara then invited author, poet and blogger Sarah Maria Griffin to present the 'Wellread' awards to the individual schools. Sarah spoke at length about the power of poetry and described it as a 'tool' that we all have at our disposal to change the world and make it a better place. She is currently nonimated for the 'An Post Irish Book' award and will find out very shortly if she has been successful. She then read her favourite poem 'The Lovely Bones' by Maggie Smyth, which she explained is something that she shares with every group and class she teaches. It was a very proud day for the students and teachers of CB and we are grateful for the hard work and dedication from everyone in our school community who made this special day possible.

The U.15 boys soccer team played their first match of the Wicklow/Wexford league against a strong Gorey CS team in Riverchapel Complex on Thursday. In a hard fought and tense affair Carnew started well and with a strong defensive display kept the match scoreless to half time. Gorey scored early in the second half but Carnew rallied, pushing their opponents back and creating some half chances. With only minutes left Tim Ivers burst through and beat the keeper only for his shot to hit the post. In injury time Gorey broke away and, with Carnew committed forward, scored on the break to win 2-0. This was a very promising start to the campaign and the squad have more games to come against Arklow CBS and Wexford CBS after midterm.

The first year girls from Coláiste Bhríde took Ballinakill by storm today in the Super Sevens Blitz where a total of eighteen teams from around the county entered the competition. Team White got off to a super start defeating East Glendalough in what was a spectacular show of football. Unfortunately they were defeated by St. Mary’s and Coláiste Craobh Abhainn and did not progress to the semi final. Team Blue were convincing winners over Avondale C.C., Glenart, St. Kevin’s Dunlavin and Coláiste Chill Mhantáin. This set them up for a semi final against Scoil Chonglais which they won convincingly and took their well deserved place in the final. St. Mary’s, Arklow seemed to be a more even match for the Carnew ladies but it didn’t take long for them to dominate in all positions and go on to win the game, bringing the cup home to Carnew for the second year running. Both teams played with great heart and determination and we look forward to welcoming them home with more silverware in the future.

We had two teams enter the competition, Team Blue in the A championship and Team White in the B championship. Team White started off their campaign with a strong win over Dominican College, while Team Blue beat Blessington CC. Team White had a convincing win over St. Kevin’s CC 2 which sent them straight to the final against Gaelcolaiste na Mara. Team Blue unfortunately lost out to St. Kevin’s CC 1 but gained their place in the final with a hard fought win over Scoil Chonglais in round 3. Team White dominated the B final with a fantastic display of football against Gaelcolaiste an Mara and brought home the B shield. Team Blue met a strong St Kevin’s CC 1 team in the final and unfortunately lost out in the last few minutes of the game.

Monday October 22nd saw our senior team take on St Mary’s Arklow in round 1 of the Wicklow senior championship. As defending champions the girls were eager to get off to a good start. Indeed they stamped their authority early on and some good running gave the opportunities to build a comfortable half time lead. At half time 7 substitutes came on to good effect to see out the game. Tuesday October 23rd saw our Junior team travel to Wexford to take on Presentation College in their final group game of the south Leinster championship. Having drawn one and won one of their previous games, the girls knew a win was a must if they are to qualify from the group. Colaiste Bhride were dominant from the word go and punished Presentation College with some good scores. Indeed with some more composure the scoreline could have been a lot more comfortable in our favour. Nevertheless a strong second half saw us run out victors on a scoreline of 6-9 to 1-3. We now await the result between Gorey CS and Pres Wexford to see who will qualify from the group. Best wishes to Sarah Doyle and Anna Lalor who sustained nasty injuries in these games, we wish them a speedy recovery!
@cbcarnew Jnr Rugby beaten by Portlaoise CBS

The Coláiste Bhríde juniors were out again to take on Portlaoise CBS in Portlaoise RFC today. With a depleted Carnew side we were always going to be up against. And so it was Portlaoise running in two trys in the first quarter. The CB kept fighting and brought the score back to 10 - 7 at half time. Unfortunately we were unable to keep Portlaoise at bay and as the game went on and our defence tiered, they were to take control and dominate. Many lessons were learned and we have much to bring forward to our next game Vs Kennedy College after the midterm.
