On Thursday March 21st the CB boys junior football team travelled to Baltinglass to contest the county semi final against Scoil Chonglais Baltinglass. Playing into a strong wind in the first half Colaiste Bhride worked tirelessly and matched the home side score for score. At half time the teams were level and CB were unlucky not to lead having twice rattled the crossbar. Scoil Chonglais scored a fortuitous goal on the restart and from then on CB were chasing the game. Despite being dominant in possession, scores were hard to come by against a strong defensive unit. The final score read 4-5 to 1-7 in favour of the home team. Best of luck to Baltinglass in the final.

We visited three local farms on Wednesday, 15th March. Firstly to Dunne's, to view their new robotic milking machines, and their new herd of jersey cows, as well as their custom built shed. They are using the zero grazing approach which is very innovative. Our next farm to visit was Furlong's, another dairy unit that has been upgraded to milk 28 cows at a time, They are milking Holsteins, using the quick release system which has reduced the milking time dramatically for them. Finally we visited Lancaster's farm and viewed their bull beef production system, We also took a look at their out farm and we were able to see first hand, spring barley sowing taking place on 15th March. Many thanks to our hosts and the time they gave to our 6th year Ag Science students and the bonus was the beautiful sunny day. Thanks also to Ms Nolan and Erin Murphy.

On Monday, 21st of March our senior football panel travelled to Hollywood to face St. Kevin’s Dunlavin in the senior A County Wicklow final. The county campaign for the girls to get to this point was relatively easy as they won each game. Despite this, we all knew that this match would not be easily won. We knew that it would be down to who wanted this title more. The defeat of last year’s campaign fuelled us for this final. During the warm up of both teams, the determination and desire was evident. From the first whistle there was tension between in the air. St. Kevin’s seemed to pull away from our girls who trailed behind them. This only lasted a mere five minutes. Despite the trojan effort put forward by the Dunlavin side they only managed to score a total of two points in those pivotal opening minutes. Following this the game settled in and our girls found their feet. Trailing by 2 points was not going to get our spirits down. Our girls battled to win our kick outs by Shanyn McLoughlin at the half back line with Siofra Byrne, Cliona Mourdaunt and Aishling Wintherbotham working in unison to fluster the forwards in an attempt to make a break in play. Throughout, the ball seemed to move seamlessly up the pitch with Orla Kiely and Sarah Byrne matching pace and skill. For the majority of the second half our girls failed to break the defence of the Dunlavin full back line. Zoe Katus, Emma Tomkins, Emma Doyle, Abby Doyle and Aoibhinn Myers worked tirelessly in order to get any score. Following the initial break- through of our forwards Carnew's momentum grew. Working together and going toe to toe against each marker was the only way to win this game. Despite an injury to Emma Katus in the initial minutes of the game the girls worked together. Amanda Kidd stepped up to the marker and battled well in Emma's absense. Shortly afterwards Emma Tomkins received a variety of knocks to her knee, this did not phase her as she managed to play on and score on more than one occasion. A total of two frees were awarded to our side with Aoibhinn Myers taking her position on the field for the frees. Her first free was aimed at the corner of the net but the Dunlavin goal keeper showed such composure and skill blocking Aoibhinn from a goal. The second opportunity presented to Aoibhinn was not going to replicate the first penalty. Aoibhinn aimed and scored, securing the ball in the back of Dunlavin's net. This gave the girls a new lease of life before the half time whistle blew. There was some significant play in the first half which ensured that Carnew lead by two points at half time. The girls knew that despite having a two point lead they would not walk away with a title at this point in the game. We decided at half time that we needed to up our play and continue to strive forward. We knew that we would be working against the wind at this point, making our job even harder to secure. With the blow of the second whistle the Dunlavin side fought for every ball. Scores were not going to be secured easily. It was clear to see that Dunlavin could not match the skill level and passion that Carnew presented on the day. Two more penalties were awarded to Carnew with Aoibhinn Myers again stepping up to the mark. She showed great composure and skill in order to convert a goal and a point from these frees on such a momentous day. Shortly after her second free Aoibhinn suffered an injury to her ankle. She continued to play however, was taken off shortly afterwards with Alanna Davidson coming on in her place. Emma Katus subbed in for Roisin Kennedy who was later replaced by Kayleigh Kavanagh. Sarah Mulhall and Anna Lalor also made an appearance on the field, making their presence known. Before the start of injury time Carnew was leading by a total of two points again, this did not last long as Dunlavin matched those two points. Injury time played a crucial element to the game as the final five minutes showed the county what Carnew is made of. Another goal was secured in injury time as a result of fantastic team work by the forwards on the field. Dunlavin was devastated but they dug deep in order to answer our goal. They managed to secure a point from play in response. For the final few moments of the game Dunlavin battled hard in its attempt to even the score once again. This was not their day as Emily Hadden, Lauren Byrne and Shanyn McLoughlin denied their attempts consistently. Our full back line held a solid defence which would not be broken. The final whistle blew and a rush of emotions filled the air. Relief and excitement to name a few. The final score was 3-3 to 0-10 in favour of our girls. Although a spectacular performance was put in by each and every girl on the day a special mention must go to Emily Hadden, Aoibhinn Myers, Emma Tomkins, Zoe Katus, Lauren Byrne and Anna Lalor. The win meant that our captain, Emily Hadden, and our vice captain, Sarah Byrne, could accept the cup on behalf of the entire Coláiste Bhríde Carnew community. Emily Hadden accepted the title graciously while making a speech that included everyone that made the victory on the day possible. Our senior football ladies are proud county champions. We would like to thank the parents who travelled to the final today in order to support the girls, it does mean a lot to everyone of us to know that you are a constant source of encouragement and support for us all on the pitch. I would also like to thank management for all of the support throughout the campaign this year and finally, to the girls. I would like to mention how proud I am to have mentored such a fantastic group of athletes all year, their determination, dedication and team work is un-parrallelled. I'm so proud of each and every one of you and you should be proud of yourselves. As I said to you in Hollywood, girls, I have never been so proud of a group of young women before and I would like to thank you all for your belief and commitment to the team. It was a special surprise for us all to have Ms Kavanagh with us for the final. You deserved the win in this year’s county final, like you deserve the title! Ms Whelan Sincere thanks to Ms Whelan for her support and encouragement. A huge depth of gratitude is owed.

Coláiste Bhríde Carnew hosted its 7th annual Young Scientist Competition with 44 projects from Transition Year pupils competing on Monday, 13th March 2017. This competition offers a platform for pupils to present their scientific findings on a project that they have chosen and developed independently. It encourages pupils to explore an idea, investigate it, develop a project and write a report to support their findings. Their reports booklets, project display and their verbal presentation are all considered when they are judged. Many skills such as team work, communication, self-directed learning and responsibility are called on by each pupil to name but a few. The two Judges, Ms Siobhan Fitzgerald and Erin Murphy were amazed at how the standard of projects continues to outshine previous years. The coveted title of OVERALL WINNER was awarded to Adam Hayes, Conor Dolan, Maeve Lyons and Gavin Goodwin for their project titled “Piezoelectric Floortiles- Kinetic Energy will power our school”. This project investigated collecting kinetic energy of the footsteps of students to power the school. Their expertise for their project, resourcefulness with sourcing materials and their innovative hypothesis gave them the edge against the other groups. Each class group that competed had a winner with 1st place being awarded to Rebecca Griffin for “Lexic Text”, Orla Kealy, Sarah Mulhall and Dervla Donlon for their project “Are young people spending more time in the virtual world than the real world?”, Katie Butler and Rebecca O'Toole for their project “The effect of Music on Memory”, Fiona Boland and Roisin Byrne for their project investigating “ The influence media can have over public perception of GMO’s”, and finally Ciara and Aoife Breen for their project “To investigate the gender of same sex twins affects the similarity of their likes and dislikes” This year saw our examiners add a new category for the best display which was awarded to Lisa Lancaster, Cliath Rawson and Sarah O'Neill for their project titled “The effects of refined sugar versus natural sugar while exercising”. A certificate of Highly Commended was awarded to the runner up projects. These included “The effect of music on blood pressure” by Fintan Smith and David Kemple, “To investigate the triggers of nostalgia and does your brain structure influence the result” by Orla Montague and Katie Smyth, “Let it Loose- Men Verses Women” by Orla Byrne, Amy Moore and Amy Nola, "Natural Nettle Shampoo" by Sarah Byrne, Steven Greene and Lorna Southern and “Can smellers kill?” by Katelyn Murphy, Brid Nolan and Leah Cullen. The aspirations of the Coláiste Bhríde Carnew Young Scientist competition are to motivate and nurture young scientists for the future. This year many of these competitors will be traveling to the Scifest competition in Carlow IT. Well done to all students who worked so hard. Sincere thanks to our teachers, Ms Rickerby, Ms Nolan, Ms Fleming and Ms Eivers.
