Seachtain na Gaeilge eile tagtha agus réimse leathan gníomhaíochtaí eagraithe do scoláirí na scoile. Seoladh an tseachtain speisialta seo ar an Luan nuair a crochadh plean na seachtaine ar bhalla na scoile. Ar an Máirt thug an dara bliain cuairt ar ionad oidhreachta Loch Garman. Turas den scoth a bhí ann inar fhoghlaim na scoláirí faoi stair ársa na tíre. Lean siad eang na sinsear agus chonaic siad na lonnaíochtaí éagsúla a bhíodh in Éirinn fadó. Bhain na daltaí idir thaitneamh agus tairbhe as an lá. Faraor, bhí báisteach throm ag titim le linn an turais ach ba léir nár chuir sé sin as d'éinne a ghlac páirt. An lá dar gcionn, bhí comhrac an bhradáin ann nuair a eagraíodh comórtas iománaíochta ag am lóin sa halla spóirt. Dean Grandy, dalta ón seú bliain a bhuaigh sa deireadh. Bhain gach duine sult as an gcluiche trí mheán na Gaeilge! Bhailigh an grúpa traidisiúnta le chéile chomh maith agus sheinn siad ós comhair na scoile agus bhí neart cóisirí ar siúl sna ranganna Gaeilge chun ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an teanga shaibhir agus ar an gcultúr The arrival of another seachtain na Gaeilge and with it a broad range of activities organised for our students. This special week was launched on Monday when a plan for the week was hung on the wall of the school. On Tuesday the second years visited the Heritage centre in Wexford. It was a wonderful trip where the students learned about the ancient history. They followed in the footsteps of their ancestors and they saw the various types of settlements which used to exist in ancient Ireland. The students enjoyed the learning experience and the day out with their peers. Unfortunately a heavy rain fell throughout the tour but none of the participants seemed too perturbed by the weather. The event was enjoyed by all and all "as Gaeilge" The school trad group performed a music session in front of the school and there were many parties in Irish classes throughout the school celebrating the language and culture of the country. The following day there was a hotly contested hurling competition organised in the hall. Dean Grandy, a sixth year student was victorious in the end. The event was enjoyed by all and all "as Gaeilge" The school trad group performed a music session in front of the school and there were many parties in Irish classes throughout the school celebrating the language and culture of the country.

A fantastic afternoon was had in Coláiste Bhríde at our Rock of Ages (High School Edition) Audition Workshop! The expertise and positivity of Rob Vickers was so much appreciated by all who were put through their paces. Skill tips ranged from comic timing, pacing and delivery to characterisations. Rob was followed by choreographers Ciara and Aoife Breen who broke down a few audition dance moves for the 100+ auditionees available on the day. The atmosphere was electric and the talented crew are sure to make an impressive cast. Save the date - December 14th-16th 2017!

On Tuesday, 14th March, Coláiste Bhríde played the reigning County Champions Avondale College in the county semi-final. The team had prepared well over the last two weeks and had the benefit of two previous matches. On the day the plan discussed worked well and Carnew built an early 1-1 lead which was scored by Robble Brooks midfield. The team got into some flowing attacking football with a half time score of 4-2 to 1-2. In the second half Carnew played into a strong wind which hampered the attack, but an early Eoin Darcy goal kept the momentum up. It finished on a score line of 5-5 to 1-7. Great to be back in the final after missing out last year, but lots to improve on before Easter. Players of note included Dean Grandy, Robbie Brooks, Rory Stokes, Sean Forde and Eoin Darcy. Captain Donnchadh McDonald. Thanks to Mr. Nolan and Mr. Morris.

The 1st Yr Girls basketball squad travelled today to Killenaule in South Tipperary to take on Scoil Ruain in the South East semifinals. After a good win over Pres Wexford to get to this stage, the girls entered into the contest with confidence. However a poor start and lack of concentration gifted Killenaule some early scores. Carnew came back into it towards the end of the quarter and with a fine shot from Caitlin Hughes, we trailed 10-2. The second quarter saw another sluggish start but some good scores from Ellie Hadden and Mollie Mulroe saw us trailing 20-7 at the break. In the third quarter the girls really dug deep to win that quarter 7-5 with 6 pts from Aoibhe Lancaster. In the final quarter while continuing to keep pushing, the gap unfortunately was too great and the match ended 34-16 to Killenaule. The girls can be proud of all that they achieved this year in basketball and we have loads to build on for next year.

Today the TY Young Social Innovators travelled to the very plush Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny to speak out about Homelessness. They joined hundreds of hopefuls who sang, mimed and danced their way across the stage. The team were amazing on the day, they got some laughs and most importantly their message across very clearly to the panel of judges. Well done to a lively and brave group of young people who are passionate about this very current and important cause. Many thanks to Ciara Tompkins and Sandra for accompanying the group.

The Irish/German Exchange Programme between Coláiste Bhríde and the KGS ( Kooperative Gesamtschule Sehnde) continued in February 2017 with a return visit by our school. Students from Coláiste Bhríde once again experienced German hospitality at first hand whilst staying with their German families. They enjoyed the opportunity to experience German culture and food as well as the chance to finally practice their German in the authentic setting the host families offer. The weeks activities were organised by our host teachers prior to our arrival. Trips to Hamburg and Wolfsburg were highlights of the week as the students were treated to a visit to the newly built Opera House in Hamburg which cost a staggering €800.5 million to build. This state of the art facility on the banks of the Elbe River was our first port of call before the students were brought to the Hamburger Dungeon. The "Dungeon experience" was created to present the (sometimes very gruesome) history of the city in a fun and interactive way. Students were most impressed by the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg where the legendary German engineering and efficiency was in full view. Despite photographs being "verboten" there were many taken as the viewing train wound it’s way around the various stations where robots put the finishing touches to the latest Volkswagen models. When not on trips above described, our students shadowed their partners in school and took part in classes where appropriate. Exposure to a foreign school system certainly offered another perspective to our Coláiste Bhríde students and many were surprised at the lack of technology in the classroom. As the week progressed it was obvious that the young people in our charge were becoming very comfortable with their new surroundings, making new friends and most importantly learning more about the language they are studying in school. The weekend was spent with their host families. Many students were brought on day trips to local attractions and many of them met up for a farewell get together before the final farewell on Sunday morning. As the coach pulled out of Sehnde and families waved " Auf Wiedersehen", it was clear that our ties with Sehnde and the KGS continue to strengthen as the years pass, ensuring that Coláiste Bhrídes students of German will continue to benefit in the future. Sincere thanks to Mr. Conniffee, Ms Burke and Ms Carley. Photos to follow.

All classes in the school received a talk on "Waterspout" by students in 1 Beech. They are now looking for donations in order to provide one water tank and water bottles for all students in one primary school in Uganda. Donations can be left in the glass container in the front social area from Wednesday onwards. Students can also help out by purchasing loads of goodies during the four bake sales in March organised by first year students. Well done to all students involved in any way.

Coláiste Bhríde is very fortunate to have both French and German exchanges alive and well. Our German exchange students and teachers returned home on Sunday, 5th March, having had an action packed week - full report to follow. Our French exchange students and teachers flew to Nantes on Friday, 3rd March and our students have spent the weekend with their exchange families. We wish them well as their busy week begins. We also have 2 students who begin their 3 week stay in France - a really special opportunity for them. Bon courage a tout le monde!
