Claudia Farrar TY As a part of our YSI project, "Homeless, not Hopeless", we decided to visit a number of primary schools in order to raise awareness for the severe issue of Homelessness. So far we have visited Scoil Aodan Naofa in Carnew, Kilcommon National School in Tinahely, and Ballyduff National School. We give a short presentation, show a video and appeal for the children to bring in any scarves they have at home to help a project we are currently working on as a class. The presentation is very interactive, and has been a great success so far! If anyone would like to donate a scarf to our cause, please send it into the school. Well done to all involved in this very worthwhile initiative.

Xmas Factor Report

CB brought the curtain down on another busy term with our annual Xmas Factor Talent show in the gym on Thursday December 23rd. There was a huge variety of talent on show from students in first to sixth year. The large crowd enjoyed song and dance and a rare Irish performance from Ms Honey G. Robbie Brooks and Donnacha McDonald certainly gave Ant and Dec a run for their money as they acted as a witty pair of presenters in the day. A huge thanks must go to the student council and Ms Finlay who organised today's event. Also a big thanks to Luke Murphy on sound, Mr Lynch on lights and to John Murphy and his team who got the hall ready! Before the results were announced, five brave (or naive) teachers agreed to take part in "I'm a teacher, get me out of here blind tasting jungle challenge"! If you think that was a mouthful you should have seen what they had to eat... As voting for under way it became clear that it was going to be very hard to call a winner. In the end the Judges Choice award went to superstar dancers Ciara and Aoife Breen, 2nd place went to Emma Cullinan in 1st year while the overall winner was Aoife O Neill who sang a brilliant rendition of Pat Shorts "Jumbo Breakfast Roll". Well done to all contestants, music and dance talent is alive and well in Colaiste Bhride!

Ninety seven third years and their pastoral care team enjoyed a fantastic day in Dublin on Tuesday, 20th December. It began with a trip to Dundrum for lunch and shopping where everyone was able to indulge in a bit of last minute shopping. The group then headed to Winter Funderland in the RDS where they experienced a whirlwind of rides- literally! Top of the list of favourites were The Hammer, Around the World, American Express and Tsunami. The names say it all! Some survived the experience better than others. Well done to all on their display of courtesy, fellowship and good humour (notice the omission of punctuality!). This was another first for the school as outings go. Who knows- it may not be the last for the year?! Sincere thanks to Ms Gahan, Ms Burke, Ms Eivers, Mr Callanan, Ms Drummond and Mr. Kenny. Photos to follow...

Coláiste Bhríde On Ice On Tuesday, 20th December our fifth year students enjoyed a well deserved trip to Dundrum On Ice. Their sense of fun and teamwork was evident on the ice, as the more experienced skaters supported the less experienced penguins! Afterwards the students enjoyed some lunch and retail therapy. Thanks to Ms Donoghoe, Ms.Lancaster, Mr. Davies, Ms. Lambert, Ms. Finlay and Ms. Morris for supporting this group throughout the year. Plans are already afoot for our end of year trip in May.

The Coláiste Bhríde Carnew girls played in the knockout game of the South Leinster competition on Monday, 19th December. The anticipation for this game was immense as both teams were fighting for a place in the quarter finals of the competition. Our girls battled against Tullow C.S. in Carnew. There was a definite home ground advantage for the girls as we were not prepared to loose the last game of 2016 in our own home venue. The team was hindered by the loss of Emma Katus, Emma Doyle and Aishling Wintherbotham. However, the team rallied around each other to show the opposition that despite missing some players we would not be beaten. From the first blow of the whistle the girls battled in order to win the ball. Great team work was shown in midfield by Abby Doyle and Siofra Byrne as they maintained dominance throughout the game. The score line was evenly matched throughout the first half of the game. Points arrived from Zoe Katus and Aoibhinn Myers consistently through the first half to ensure that we were a point ahead at half time. The second half marked the beginning of a new game, the Carnew side pulled ahead rapidly with goals from Zoe Katus and Aoibhinn Myers. Despite the numerous scores that Carnew were racking up Tullow put up a tough battle. Their forward line battled consistently against our defence. They utilised a number of tactics in order to break down the Carnew defence however, Lauren Byrne and Shanyn McLoughlin were not to be beaten. Tullow managed a late goal and two points in answer to Carnew's five goals and eight points. The final score was 7-12 to 2-6 in favour of Carnew. Although a spectacular performance was put in by each player on the pitch, special mention must go to Lauren Byrne, Aoibhinn Myers, Eimear O' Brien, Zoe Katus, Mollie Mulroe and Abby Doyle. Congratulations on the fantastic win girls and enjoy the well deserved break over Christmas. January sees the girls enter into the quarter finals of the south Leinster competition. We look forward to progressing through the competition. Special thanks to Ms Whelan.
Yuletide Serenade - Musical Evening

2016 finished on a high note for the music department in Coláiste Bhríde with a fully sold -out concert Yuletide Serenade which took place in St. Brigid’s Hall on Friday 16th December. The audience was treated to an eclectic collection of music to suit all tastes. All but a couple of the performances on the night consisted of new material. The 35 strong concert band, conducted by Teresa Glynn, played a selection of seasonal numbers along with a powerful rendition of the theme music from the James Bond movie Skyfall. Nine new members from 2015/16 were formally welcomed into the band on the night..They are: Krista Retina, Amy Doran, Roisín Kenny, Emma Kinch, Ross Bailey, Aaron Keogh, Carrie Brennan, Elizabeth O’Sullivan and Jade Shannon. The band also had some adult performers: instrumental teachers Willie & Sarah Dunne, tuba player Paul Antcliff, saxophonist Michel Pierrot and bass guitarist David Callinan. The fifteen first year students who are currently taking band lessons will join the band at an end-of-year event in the school at the end of May. The Trad group, led by Rita Murphy and which now has over 20 members included a lovely version of Fairytale of New York in its repertoire. This went down a treat with the audience as did the jigs, reels and other Irish pieces. Teresa also conducted first year, second year and TYP class choirs who performed beautiful choral pieces which they chose themselves and made their own by changing the arrangement of the pieces to suit their skills and talents. Among the songs performed by the competition choir were You Raise Me Up, O Holy Night and Silver Bells. The accompanist for all the choral performances was Lar Duffy, fresh from his role as musical director of Carnew Musical Society’s hugely successful week long run of Fiddler on the Roof . Ali Kavanagh and Rachel Murtagh sang a duet Who Would Imagine a King, Olivia Mathews wowed the audience with her version of The Christmas Waltz during which Ciara Shannon and Aidan Rochfort danced an old time waltz. The choir accompanied 4 soloists: Leigh Ludgate, Alice Colfer, Jasmine Kavanagh and Laura Kavanagh as they sang the Chris de Burgh song A Spaceman Came Travelling. David Callinan, a virtuoso on the acoustic guitar assisted with many of the choral and solo pieces. Pat Brennan who acted as MC for the evening joined the concert band to read the much loved poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. The concert concluded with the audience joining all the performers – band, choirs, trad group and soloists to forge one big happy musical community for an uplifting and emotional singing of Adeste Fidelis. Bouquets of flowers were presented to Teresa by Denis Finn and to Rita by Linda Dunne in appreciation of the work which they both put into preparation for the concert. The students who performed were thanked for their commitment, dedication and excellent behaviour at all times. Teresa referred to them as being ‘musically independent’ which she explained as meaning that all she had to do was tell them what she wanted them to do and knowing that they could be trusted to use their own initiative to do it.. Thanks were also extended to: Kevin McEvoy (lights); Byrne Brothers (sound); Orla Grant (tickets & posters); Ann Lennon ( ticket sales); Aisling Crowley (ushers - 5th prefects ); Luke Murphy and his fellow students (setting up of hall); Parents Association (raffle prizes and ticket sales); Peggy Austin & Gabrielle Redmond (refreshments in canteen)
Reflections on Centre for Talented Youth in DCU by Adam Bailey

My reflections on CTYI in DCU One day, Ms Gahan and Ms Lee announced that we, a group of first year students were nominated to sit the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). This three hour exam could perhaps make us eligible to attend summer courses hosted by CTYI (Centre for Talented Youth Ireland) in Dublin City University. That January, I took the test in Wexford IT. I was over the moon when I found out that I qualified for a two week residential course in CAT (Centre of Academic Talent). The following summer, when school was over, I was getting increasingly nervous. I would be staying in a strange place in Dublin for two weeks with complete strangers, with the exception of one or two people who attended my school. So, the day came. My family helped me pack the stuff I would need for the fortnight. After registration in the university, we were divided into groups and shown to our apartments by our RA (Residential Assistant). My roommate was a nice guy by the name of Philip. I made a few friends during dinner that evening. There, the director welcomed us, prior to participating in a table quiz in the Terence Larkin lecture hall (we didn't come anywhere near first!) The next day I had a busy schedule. I attended class from 9am to 3pm. In my first year I studied Medicine and my second year I studied Neuroscience. After class each day our RAs organised activities for us to bond and unwind. Some activities were everyday ones, like soccer, or rugby, but others were really fun games I'd never heard of before. We had a bit of free time before study each evening. On Friday evenings, we had a big activity, where different RA's would host a parody of a game show, such as Catchphrase, or The Chaser. On Saturday our schedule was different again, we would normally go on a trip to the local shopping centre in Santry. There, we were given free roam of the place and to go/do/buy what we wanted, as long as we behaved. What was also great about Saturdays, was the disco. It wasn't that late, and some of the songs were terrible, but they were fun, and we really enjoyed them. Sundays were more relaxed, quiet days. We had to pick a trip to go on, so I picked the zoo, as most of my mates were going there. We lounged around for the day until we had a big activity. Last year it was a Zombie Apocalypse, this year was a murder mystery. On our second week we attended classes again. We graduated on Thursday and everyone received their certificates. Afterwards, the mood was slightly depressing, as everyone knew it was the last day they'd see each other, but the mood brightened one last time, as there was a disco to celebrate the end of the course. On the final day, everyone went around, packing up, saying goodbye to the great friends they had made over the course of the two weeks. Parents arrived for the Parent Teacher meetings and to take their offspring home. I looked back as we drove away, both times, swearing I'd never forget my times going there, as they were, the best times of my life. Adam Bailey.
