On Thursday, 15th December our 2nd years made their way in festive form to Dundrum on Ice. After an hour of some fairly impressive figure skating by this talented crew (admittedly there was a fair share of rail hugging and desperate clinging onto penguins) there was time for shopping and a quick bite to eat. Rumour has it that Penney's had to get a team in to restock the shelves and Starbucks had run out of coffee!! A warm welcome and a full bus seat was given to our new mascot and of course we believe in unicorns! We had a great day, and as usual the 2nd years behaved impeccably. Huge thanks to class teachers – Ms Melia, Mr. Whhite, Ms Lavelle, Mr. Morris, Ms Fitzgerald and Ms Davitt for travelling and for their support of our 2nd years on a daily basis. A big thank you also to Mrs Lee and her boys and Charlotte, our French assistant, for accompanying the team on their special day!
TY Mental Health Initiative

While at Zeminar on Wednesday the 12th of October, we were inspired by Bressie's speech , especially the line saying that " we are the generation that can change the world" So, as a project in Transition Year my twin sister Aoife and I have decided to start a mental Heath initiative in our school. We began by doing a dance class at lunch time which was named "Don't Stop Believing Dance", some students and even teachers joined our class over the first few weeks of the project, and everyone enjoyed an active and fun lunch time together. On Tuesday the 15th of November, we received an email from the ISSU, describing a competition they were running to raise awareness for LGBT week. The competition asked students in school to create a large display of a rainbow somewhere visible within their school and after receiving this email Aoife and I decided that this would also relate to our mental health initiative and we decided to set up a rainbow in our school. We needed to find a way to make our rainbow different and we decided that, to show that people shouldn't be limited to a certain image, our rainbow was not in its usual bands of colour. We also asked students to add a positive message to the rainbow which then promoted positive mental health also. On Thursday the 15th of December, we set up a Christmas wish tree in the social area, where students could add their wish to the tree by writing it on a tag and adding it to the tree, whether it was to have a peaceful and happy Christmas with their families or something as big as bringing peace to the world because "You are never given a wish, without also being given the power to make it true" Richard Bach. We plan to continue with this initiative in the new year. Ciara Breen A huge well done to Ciara and Aoife Breen!

Coláiste Bhríde held its 3rd annual tractor run on Wednesday, 14th of December. For three years in a row now, students themselves with the help of the deputy principal and principal have organised this event as a fundraiser for Childline. Last year proved to be very successful raising almost €600 in total for the charity and the fundraising continues this year with each of the tractor drivers having their own sponsorship card. The day of the run was a wet and windy but despite the rain, the tractor run went ahead with 28 tractors departing from the school just after 11 a.m. Both past and present pupils participated in the tractor run which was escorted by Gavin Nolan and the South East security crew through Camolin, Craanford and returning to the school for 1 o'clock. It was a very successful day and many thanks to PJ Barnes and Aaron Donnelly, both 6th year students, for organising this year's event. The money raised will be presented to a representative from Childline in the near future. Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to next years event! Maybe some of us will come back as past students! Charlotte
Junior Ladies Qualify for County Final

On Wednesday, 14th December the girl’s junior team travelled to Dunlavin to play against St. Kevin's in the junior county semi-final. Despite the horrific weather and the absence of some key players the girls played as a team. The initial throw in was won by the Carnew team who refused to allow the ball to come into the hands of St. Kevin's players. The girls made a number of attempts at both goal and points however didn't manage to covert the efforts into scores. The Dunlavin side was determined and they battled hard to score a goal and a point very quickly after each other in order to see themselves on the winning side at half time. When the whistle blew for the second half it was evident that a new Carnew team had stepped onto the pitch. The Dunlavin side attempted to secure a number of goals however, Shanyn McLoughlin was on top form and refused to allow any goals pass her line in the second half. She showed great composure and skill. The efforts made by the back line including Lauren Byrne and Zoe Katus ignited a fire inside the other girls on the pitch as they picked up the tempo and fired three goals into the back of the Dunlavin net. The opposition was quick to answer with four points in quick succession however, the Coláiste Bhríde girls dug deep and secured four points in the short time remaining securing a win for the Carnew side. The final score 3-4 to 1-5 in favour of Carnew. Abby Doyle, Aishling Wintherbotham, Lauren Byrne, Shanyn McLoughlin, Zoe Katus and Rebecca Barnes played a phenomenal game and we are all very proud of the entire team effort. The junior girls now look forward to playing the county final in the new year. Sincere thanks to Ms Whelan and Mr Conniffe.

Donal Walsh Foundation: We were both privileged and honoured to have Fionnbar Walsh from the 'Donal Walsh Foundation' visit Coláiste Bhríde and speak of the fantastic legacy of his son Donal. Donal passed away at the tender age of 16 from a rare bone cancer over three years ago. Fionnbar's delivered a spellbinding account of Donal's illness and conviction that all young people should treasure the life they have and share their problems. A presentation was made to Fionnbar from money collected from senior cycle students. We look forward to welcoming Fionnbar back in the near future.

Kilcoole 3 - 0 Colaiste Bhride It was a tough afternoon for the U-15 soccer team as they lost their semi final 3-0 to Kilcoole. Despite a fairly even start, Kilcoole took the lead midway through the first half after a clever piece of play and a nice finish. Colaiste Bhride responded well with some good play but, unusually for this time of year, the weather was extremely warm and this took its toll in the lads. It was a draining game but the second half was even for long periods. However, after a good piece of attacking play from Kilcoole, a necessary goal line clearance from Ryan Gilfoyle was judged to have hit him in the arm, and the resulting penalty made it 2-0. The third goal, a scrappy cross which found its way into the net, sealed the game for Kilcoole. Despite the result, CBC can be proud of what they have achieved this year. Unfortunately, the performance required just wasn't there on the day. There were some good performances from the lads, particularly Caoimhin Rawson in goal who produced some excellent saves, Cillian McDonald in midfield and Jason Bolger who, despite only coming into the team for the first time, produced a very assured display.

UCAS: Yesterday, we welcomed Stephanie McCann, marketing advisor with UCAS who delivered a comprehensive seminar to 5th year students on studying in the U.K. Brexit doesn't have any negative impact on students who are contemplating undertaking university studies in N. Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. Health Science courses in the UK are always an attractive prospect for our students and I have no doubt this will be the case when our students apply in 2018.
