Junior Camogie

On the Friday, 28th October, just before mid-term our junior camogie panel played the second game of their Leinster competition against Our Lady of Lourdes, Rosbercon. The Coláiste Bhríde side met with a very experienced and proficient side in their host components. Despite the challenge the girls kept their heads high and continued to battle through to the final whistle. Unfortunately, the skills and dexterity of the opposing team was too much to overcome on the day and the New Ross side sealed the victory. The junior panel remains a very young and enthusiastic group of ladies, a promising panel for years to come. Sincere thanks to Ms Lancaster and Ms Drummond.

The school folk band was one of four schools to perform during a pre-dinner reception at an ETB Instructional Leadership Conference held in Mount Woslely, Tullow on Friday evening, 21st October. It was the group's first outing of the year and the first group performance for some of this year's new recruits. They acquitted themselves really well with an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary numbers. Even the boss himself pricked up his ears and came over to thank them. Thank you so much to Mr Callanan for organising our students and supporting them. The group is pictured with Mr. Sean Ashe, CE KWETB.

Our sixth year Higher Level English students were treated to an utterly engaging performance of Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Hamlet’, in the Mill Theatre, Dundrum on Friday, 28th October. Set in the kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatises the revenge Prince Hamlet is called upon to wreak upon his uncle, Claudius. The students thoroughly enjoyed the production with the protagonist, Hamlet stealing the show. It certainly proved to be an excellent opportunity for our sixth years to revise their Leaving Certificate single text. Thank you so much to our English teachers—Ms Donoghue, Mr Callanan, Ms Stack and Ms Whelan

All first year students came together on Friday last for the inaugural First Year Maths Quiz. This is a new initiative organised by the Maths Department and Numeracy Team in the school. Teams of four participated in 8 rounds consisting of three or four questions but under strict time constraints. At the end of the 8 gruelling rounds, only one point divided the 1st and 2nd place teams but five teams shared 3rd place and had to complete a tie-breaker round. This could still not divide the teams so a further tie-breaker was held from which a winner emerged. A perpetual shield was awarded to the 1st place team of Victoria Dranko, Katelyn Walker, Aoife Kennedy and Sam Carroll. 2nd place went to the team of Emma Byrne, Sophie Doran, Shona Byrne and Liam Byrne. Finishing in 3rd place was Abbie Byrne, Ella Austin Joshua Kinsella and Gearóid Boland. Prizes were awarded to all placed teams. All students are to be commended for the the positive and enthusiastic approach they took with the quiz and for their exemplary behaviour throughout, especially during the nail-biting tie-breakers.

Coláiste Bhríde Carnew 6-14 St Kevin's Dunlavin 2-10 This was a huge game for Carnew on Thursday, 27th October, with the winner qualifying out of the group and advancing to a South Leinster final against Enniscorthy CBS. Dunlavin started stronger scoring 1-4 without reply. It was at this stage Carnew kicked into gear with two well taken goals by Conor Byrne and Seán Kenny. Carnew's work rate and determination gave them the edge in a hard fought first half however they took a six point lead into halftime. Carnew continued this excellent performance into the second half, eventually winning by 16 points. Best on the day is hard to call as all players gave it their all on the pitch although a special mention must go to Conor Byrne scoring 2-3, George Hadden with two goals, Adam Hadden, Joe Conroy and Eoin Kavanagh.

Caoimhe Coady, 3rd year, has successfully been selected as a Green-Schools Ambassador for Coláiste Bhríde.. Her application was selected from a large number of applicants throughout Ireland. This is a huge achievement and will benefit our school greatly. The Green-Schools Ambassador Programme will focus on the Green-Schools Water theme. This will tie in with our 7th Green flag Global Citizenship and Energy. Caoimhe will get the opportunity to work alongside other successful ambassadors at a workshop in November and a support session in January. The workshop will include: speakers in the field of engineering, talks from the Green-Schools and Clean Coasts Programmes, activities, and a field trip to a water or wastewater treatment plant. Caoimhe will then share what she has learned with her school and her community. We have every confidence in Caoimhe to bring back lots of ideas to implement in our school to help us save energy and become aware of how our actions affect people all over the world.
