Our school golf team of Jay Stafford, John Young, Cormac Redmond and Owen Young put in a brilliant performance in their Leinster quarter final v Avondale CC on March 21st. This competition requires all players to play off scratch so facing a team with two 2 handicappers was always going to be a daunting prospect. Nevertheless our 4 players pitted themselves superbly. Three closing birdies from Cormac Redmond and Owen Young ensured a victory of one up in Match 1. However a closing par putt from Avondale on the 18th hole in match 2 gave the home side a 2up victory and an overall aggregate score of 1 up. Congratulations to Avondale, we wish them all the best in their semi-final. Well done to this Colaiste Bhride team who have had a superb year.

Coláiste Bhrídes first year boys basketball team travelled to WIT arena Wednesday last to play their South-East Final. Our opponents on the day were Gorey CS, who we had played twice before in the lead up to the final. Carnew started slowly but Luca Molamphy steadied the side with two early free throws and a couple of great baskets. This good start was built on with scores from Callum Paterson and Jack Rosney in the second quarter. This left Carnew leading at half time 12-3. In the third quarter great defense from Maurice Sheil and Ruairi O’Brien led to many fast breaks which were well converted by Brandon Rossiter. For the final quarter Gorey came back into the game but again with excellent defense from Rory Tallon their comeback was halted. Carnew ran out winners on a score line of 21-13. Squad Members: Maurice Sheil, Ruairi O’Brien, (Co-Captains) Rory Tallon, Louis Judge, Luca Molamphy, Brandon Rossiter, Callum Paterson, Larry Kinsella, Macdara O’Neill, Toby McGuire, Jack Rosney, Ciaran Lambert (Injured)

Cian O Neill

Our first day in the school was exciting. We had a petit déjeuner (breakfast) in the canteen, as well as finding out what we would attend. Throughout le jour, we sat in on various lessons. Some of them we enjoyed, like Science, and others we didn’t, for example, double maths!! It was fun to écouter (listen) and watch a different culture’s classes unfold. Later in the evening, we had a Crepe Night, hosted by the French students. The crepes were très délicieux and it was hard to stop eating them! We all enjoyed ourselves & had lots of fun today (even in the cold weather!!) Ciara Hennessy
Second Year Science trip to Euro Space Centre in Belgium - An account by Brid Doyle 2 Laurel

We arrived in Dublin Airport early Friday morning and everyone was tired and hungry. After we went through security some of us went to the restaurant and got breakfast before we went on the plane. After landing safely in Belgium, we took a two hour bus journey to the Euro Space Centre where we first got our room allocations and unpacked before we headed to class. Our first class lecture set out what we would be doing over the few days. We were split up into groups and they gave each group a different colour t-shirts to wear. Out timetable ensured that the different teams got to complete each activity at a certain time. After the activities we headed to an all you could eat Chinese buffet where the food was absolutely gorgeous. We ended the night with a movie( we only watched it for ten minutes!)and everyone went back to their rooms for a badly needed sleep. We had been on the go for 20 hours non stop ! On Saturday we woke up at 7:30am so that we could all get dressed for breakfast and start the activities for the day. We started the day with a Moon/Mars walk simulator, where you squat and jump in a chair while wearing simulation goggles to experience how it would feel to walk on mars. After the simulation walk we had got our packed lunch and headed off to the water park. As there was a long bus journey to the water park someone of us brought a speaker to listen to some music on the way and we were all singing along to the upbeat songs. We spent three hours in the water park with indoor and outdoor slides and pools and we were all very hungry after, so we made our way to the restaurant where the all you can eat European buffet was waiting for us. The buffet included a self-serving desert counter so I think the students from our school drained the ice-cream machine and possibly ate most of the chocolate from the chocolate fountain too. Everyone was very full and very tired. We arrived back at the Space Centre at 11:15pm and everyone got dressed for bed but most people stayed up talking for a while. After not getting much sleep the night before everyone was quiet tired on Sunday but getting to make mini rockets and launching them made everyone very happy and excited. After the launching of the rockets we made our way to Brussels Airport where we had a few hours to spare so most people bought Mother’s Day gifts and some food to eat. When the plane arrived in Dublin we were met by a strong wind and cold air.We left the airport and got onto our bus and headed back to Carnew. Thanks to our teachers for coming with us and taking such great care of us, to our parents who gave us this amazing opportunity and to all my fellow travellers for making it such a good experience. Coláiste Bhríde Carnew hosted its 8th annual Young Scientist Competition in conjunction with Scifest @ Schools. This competition continues to grow from strength to strength and has moved its platform from the science labs to the larger social area. Sheila Porter, Founder and CEO of Scifest, visited the exhibition and acted as one of the four judges on the day. This was an amazing opportunity to have such an experienced and high profile judge. Siobhan Fitzgerald, Erin Murphy and Alison Moran worked alongside Sheila Porter to assess all projects with some groups receiving up to four judging’s. All groups were kept busy on the day with 1st and 2nd year students who had the challenge of judging each project and determining themselves the overall winner and best communicators. A total of 42 projects from Transition Year pupils competed on the Monday 12thMarch 2018. This competition offers a platform for pupils to present their scientific findings on a project that they have chosen and developed independently. This encourages pupils to explore an idea, investigate it, develop a project and write a report to support their findings. Their reports booklets, project display and their verbal presentation are all considered when they are judged. This competition encouraged many skills such as team work, communication, self-directed learning and responsibility to name but a few. The coveted title of OVERALL WINNER was awarded to Killian Byrne for his project titled “Farming: Is it a Healthy Lifestyle”. His expertise and passion for his project combined with a confident presentation style helped him to triumph. Sarah Kenny with her project titled “Sugar verses Sweetener, Which is Sweeter?” achievd 2nd place, the project “Should you wipe before you type” was awarded 3rd place for Ciaran O Keefe and Allanna Davidson, the project titled “Do colours affect creativity and learning” achived a 4th place for Kate McConnell and Naoise Hodgins and fifth place was awarded to Killian Lawler and Michael Kennedy for their project “Diffraction in our eyes causes us to see stars”. This year saw our examiners selected five best display projects. James Doran for his poster for “Fitness of farmers”, Niall Bradley and Aoife O Neill for their poster “Does handwriting affect your personality”, Emma Mooney, Hannah Nolan and Aran Joyce for their poster “The salmon of knowledge”, Chelsea Hutton, Jack Raleigh, Mary Gaughan and Saoirse Doyle for their poster “Who is more intelligent, Male or Female dogs?”, and Abbie Doyle and Leah Walker for their poster “Calm before the storm”. This year a new category of best communicator was awarded to Thomas May and Aishling Winterbottom by the judges and Keelin Stafford, James Doyle and Max Keogh was selected as best communicators by the pupils. All first years had to interview each competitor and judge independently Katie Southern, Daniel Redmond and Daniel Bolger for accurately selecting Killian Byrne as overall winner. A certificate of Highly Commended was awarded to the runner up projects. These included Orla Doyle and Irene Marquez for their project “Safety vrs Enjoyment”, Adam Keogh with his project “Games and Brains”, Molly Rose McDermot and Rachel Sheil for their project “The influence of information on people’s opinions in relation to climate change”. Niamh Mutton, Olivia Mathews and Lily McDonagh for their project “What it all soils down to”. The aspirations of the Coláiste Bhríde Carnew Scifest @ Schools competition are to motivate and nurture young scientists for the future. This year many of these successful competitors will be traveling to the Scifest competition in Carlow IT.
