The boys senior football team topped their group following a win over Colaiste Cill Mhantain in the south Leinster championship in Wicklow today. With both teams already qualified for the semi finals, the game had the feel of a pre-season challenge game and perhaps both coaches didn't want to show their hands too much with possible upcoming meetings in the latter stages and indeed in the Wicklow schools championship. Nearertheless, the Carnew men took control in the first half and helped by a handful of Sean Hughes frees, opened up an 8 point lead at half time. Although CCM began the second half with intent, the CB lads defended well and did enough to run out 6 point winners: 2-10 to 1-7 with goals coming from Dan Redmond and Brandon Rossiter. All in all a decent performance, though the lads know they will face tougher tasks and higher stakes in the games ahead. Welol done to all players and their manger Mr Holly.
Sunday, 13th February saw Newbridge College hold a leg of the TRI Equestrian Inter-schools League at Coilog Equestrian Centre, Co. Kildare.
The Open Team competition was won in great style by Coláiste Bhride Carnew with riders Cian Byrne, Hannah O'Neill, Chloe Walsh and Sarah Sheppard, all on clear rounds and with Cian and Chloe riding the jump off track clear and with over 2 seconds to spare. 2nd place was won by Gorey Community School and 3rd place was presented to the host school Newbridge College.
In the TRI Equestrian Open Individuals Cian Byrne was placed 2nd and 3rd on his two ponies. Hannah O’Neil claimed the 6th rosette in this very competitive competition.
Cian went on to compete in the 1.10m competition and claimed 3rd on Boularee followed by 5th on Hunters Lodge Puissance.
Sunday 30th January saw ribbons in Tipperary Equestrian Centre where Cian won the Open Individual competition on Cara Cave Boy and Johnny Shepherd took the 4th rosette on Banaher Chrissie. The open team of Cian Byrne, Hannah O’ Neill, Sarah Sheppard and Johnnie Sheppard finished in 6th place.
Exciting times for Coláiste Bhríde in the Inter-schools. Special thank you to our students and their parents.
Our senior girl's football team qualified for the Leinster final on Monday following a well earned victory over Heywood CS. Having lost the last three semi finals at this grade, we knew that we would have to play to a high standard to overcome the Laois side. The Carnew girls started with serious intent. They combined a serious level of intensity off the ball with some great play with the ball to open up an 8 point half time lead. Having being in a similar position at half time in the quarter final, only to let our opponents back into the game, the CB girls knew they had to approach the second half as they did the first. Indeed they were not found wanting as they continued to show hunger and desire to close out the game. We now look forward to a final in January. Well done to all 22 players who played on the day.
Transition Year students spent the day on Monday 22ndNovember immersing themselves in languages and cultures from across the world.
#ThinkLanguages is now held nationally, with students asked to ‘Think Global, Act Local’ and explore the languages spoken by those in their school and local community, as well as further afield. This year’s event kicked off with a pre-recorded opening ceremony, with students from ColáisteBhríde able to connect virtually with schools across the country from the safety of their own classrooms.
Kevin Mulqueen, Irish Sign Language representative, then enthralled the students with a sign language lesson, deemed the highlight of the day by most of the TYs. Students also had the opportunity to participate in an interactive quiz on European languages organised by Morgane David and Milena Bernhardt, our French and German language assistants. They then got actively involved in a variety of recorded workshops including an Introduction to Chinese, Spanish and Flamenco Dancing, Arabic Belly Dancing and many more.
As a language awareness raising event, facilitated by Post-Primary Languages Ireland, the aim of #ThinkLanguages is to highlight the personal, social, professional and economic benefits of language learning. TY students taking part in #ThinkLanguages in Coláiste Bhríde are encouraged to think about the global work opportunities, as well as the wider circle of friends and the richer life experiences that foreign language skills can offer them. They are also encouraged to appreciate the diversity of languages spoken locally within our own school and community.
The first year boys football team continued their preparations for the upcoming Leinster league with two good challenge games v Gorey CS on Thursday last. With almost 40 players togging out for Colaiste Bhride, competition for places remains very competitive indeed. Despite the tough conditions both games were high scoring and saw the Carnew lads improve upon their previous outing v FCJ Bunclody. In the end we won one and lost one on the day, however the improvement in the teamwork was the most impressive thing to take from both games.
Congratulations to Libby Collins, Rhys Davis and Myron Davidson (first year) who have had their short stories published recently. ‘The Book of Tomnafinnoge’ was officially launched by musician Liam O’Maonlaí on Wednesday 8th December. It is a collection of work (writing and photography) by local writers which was inspired by Tomnafinnoge Wood itself. The book is available to purchase locally.
