Wellbeing Week Day 1 : Eoin Downey and Ciarán Joyce

All First Year students had the opportunity to have a presentation from two of Cork's finest hurlers, Eoin Downey and Ciarán Joyce. Eoin Downey’s pathway to becoming a Cork Senior hurler began from the first moment he picked up a hurley. His unwavering dedication to the game was evident during his time in CBC where he played as part of the Harty Cup team. He played on the Cork minor and U20 teams before debuting with Cork senior team and played fullback in the All-Ireland final earlier this year. Not only has Eoin been nominated for an All-Star award this year but he has also been nominated for Young Hurler of the Year 2024. 

Ciarán Joyce is a standout player for Cork's senior hurling team, known for his impressive skills as a defender. Hailing from Castlemartyr, Joyce rose through the ranks, excelling at both underage and senior levels. He played a key role in Cork’s victories in the All-Ireland Under-20 Hurling Championships in 2020 and 2021.Ciarán Joyce continued his strong form into the 2024 hurling season as a key player for Cork. Playing predominantly as a defender, Joyce added to his growing reputation with standout performances during the National Hurling League and Munster Championship campaigns. By 2024, he had accumulated a total of 24 senior appearances for Cork, contributing 0-11 from play. His leadership and consistency in the center-back position helped Cork maintain their competitive edge in a challenging hurling landscapeJoyce’s individual talents were further recognised with nominations for prestigious awards, including a PWC All-Star nomination and being shortlisted for the Young Hurler of the Year in 2023.

CBC was delighted to welcome Dr Maureen Griffin today to speak with all Second and Third Year students about device use and online safety.Dr Maureen Griffin is a forensic psychologist and founder of MGMS Training. Since its foundation in 2010, Dr Griffin has visited over 900 Primary and Secondary schools across Ireland, speaking with students, staff, BOM members and parents regarding issues around social media, cyber-bullying and internet and mobile phone safety.She has also worked with organisations responsible for the care and protection of children; provided training in relation to online offending behaviours for those working with offenders and delivered lectures on Forensic Psychology and Criminal Behaviour Courses in Universities across Ireland. Dr Griffin has delivered lectures in the areas of abnormal psychology, mental health and crime, sexual offenders, online internet solicitation and risk assessment on Forensic Psychology, Criminal Behaviour & Criminalistics courses in Universities across Ireland. Maureen has also delivered guest lectures on Detective and Sergeant Training Courses in An Garda Síochána and on National and International Military Police Courses with the Irish Defence Forces. Dr Griffin has also presented at many Youth Mental Health Conferences across Ireland.

CBC was delighted to welcome Ms Erin Camilleri, Director of Recruitment and Strategic Partnerships at the University of Notre Dame to the College. Ms Camilleri presented to students about academic scholarships apportunities under the US system.

Congratulations to Karl Riedewald from the Leaving Cert Class of 2023 who achieved First Place in Ireland in Leaving Certificate Music. Karl will receive a special award in recognition of his achievement next month.
