Message from Laois County Council Re Roadworks
FAO: Helen O’Donnell, Maura Murphy & John Moran
I wish to provide an update in relation to the ongoing works on the Borris Road, Portlaoise.
Since close of secondary schools for the summer holidays, Laois County Council commenced an active travel scheme to extend the off-road cycling provision on the Borris Road. In order to complete the scheme as efficiently as possible, it was agreed with the contractor that a one-way system of traffic management would be implemented. This has allowed the contractor to make best use of time and ensure substantial completion of the works ahead of full reopening of the schools.
In that regard I can advise that the current traffic management arrangement is to be removed before Monday 26th August, after which 2-way traffic flow will return. I understand that a number of students will return from Tuesday 20th next, and I acknowledge that access to the schools will be via the current one-way system. However, given the lower number of students attending on those days, I am not expecting traffic to be severely impacted.
Whilst works will be substantially complete, there will still be more localised works to be completed and these will only require small scale traffic management.
Further works to install zebra crossings on the roundabouts at CBS/Scoil Criost Rí and Colliers Lane will continue for the short term, however, the contractor will ensure that traffic flow during the school term will run as smoothly as possible.
The extension of the off-road cycle lanes and installation of zebra crossings adds to the developing network of high quality active travel infrastructure across Portlaoise. We would encourage all schools to promote active travel as an alternative means of transport to that of the car.
You may wish to circulate this update to the parents of your pupils and students.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any queries on any of the above.
Kind regards,
Diarmuid Donohue, B.Eng, C.Eng, MIEI
