A noted surge in interest in iPads for 1st 2nd and 5th years - Update

We are delighted to see a surge in 5th year interest in purchasing an iPad and also purchasing the ebooks for the 5th year curriculum with the ipads from Junior Cert. For anyone who is interested here is the link: www.wriggle.ie/OnlineStoreLogin. Our School Store Code is 02742671, the same as for the other year group stores.
Some have enquired about the 5th year Irish text not being listed - similar to 2nd year, students do not settle into the Higher/Ordinary Levels until October at least. So there will be an autumn store for that subject.
The 2nd year Store will be live next week - we will let you know the date and any other relevant information.
Reminder again to the incoming first years - The closing date for the Wiggle Store is June 3rd. A late fee of €50 is added on after that date.
We think it is worth noting that other secondary schools in Portlaoise have it compulsory to purchase a tablet upon entry to the school in 1st year. We have not done that in the past, respecting the economic choices which our families must make. But times have rapidly changed and we never thought we would be looking ahead to a school year of partial physical attendance on the school premises. Nobody knows the future of this virus. This is not scaremongering. Teaching and learning have never been so dependant and enhanced by technology - but to be enhanced we need to be prepared for it, not dropped into it like last March. Now is our time to prepare.

Hi lads,
I know that you saw the YouTube collection of videos and photos which gave you some great laughs yesterday when launched. I also made a video of some words and advice for you, coming from a similar but slightly different angle than Mr O'Laoire. If you go into your App, 3 lines at top, Chat Boards, you will see the 6th Years 2020 message which includes Mr Brennan's and my own. I wish you the best of luck in your future, and look forward to your unique Graduation in the autumn. Take care, stay well, enjoy the summer. M
Massive achievement for St. Mary’s CBS Transition Year Student David “Dee” O’Brien on winning a National Award

The “Future Leaders Transition Year Programme” is a joint initiative from the GAA and the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST). In September, many schools all over the country began the programmes first year.
It is a cross-curricular programme comprising of a series of modules designed to encourage maturity, initiative, responsibility and leadership skills in pupils. The Programme gives pupils the knowledge and skills to support all roles required in the effective staging of Gaelic Games.
The students in St Mary’s CBS completed modules in Performance Analysis, Nutrition, Sports Journalism, Event Management and Sports Administration. The programme, which was brought in this year by Mr Paul Cahillane, was a huge success in the school and as well as receiving individual awards in St Mary’s CBS, some students were put forward for entry at a national level.
Dee O’Brien, proud member of Clonad GAA and also The Heath GAA, was entered into the National Awards Competition for the Sports Journalism module by his teacher Ms Niamh Hyland. Just last night the school were informed that Dee had won the overall Sports Journalism award for the Commentary competition. If the Leinster Hurling Final goes ahead this year, Dee will have the opportunity to be in the press box with other members of the sports media. If not, he will be honoured in Croke Park later in the year among other National winners.
David submitted a three minute commentary clip from the 2016 All Ireland Hurling Championship Semi Final between Waterford and Kilkenny which was a replay after a drawn game a week previous.
Mr Cahillane and Ms Hyland are delighted with Dee’s success, in this programmes inaugural year, and are looking forward to the years ahead. This initiative provides a unique and creative learning pathway for young people to acquire skills which are both sports related and transferable not only across the TY curriculum, but beyond it.
Ms Hyland is particularly proud of Dee as she has taught him since first year. “It was apparent from early years that Dee had a flair for English and this year it was obvious that he had a particular talent for Sports Journalism. We could hear Dee on the airwaves in the not so distant future!”
Attached below is the clip of Dee’s commentary and a description of his entry. St Mary’s CBS are so proud of Dee on this fantastic achievement, a worthy winner indeed.
“I am going to do a commentary of a hurling match as I have a very broad knowledge of the GAA and specifically hurling. I know all the players and most of their clubs so I would feel very comfortable commentating on a match. I feel like I might be good at commentating because of my excellent hurling knowledge and my raw passion for every part of the game. The match I will be commentating on is Waterford Vs Kilkenny in the 2016 All Ireland Hurling Championship. I took a three minute clip from this match and commentated on it because of the passion and hunger that was shown throughout those three minutes. This game was a very intense game as it was local neighbours Kilkenny and Waterford who were fighting for bragging rights and a place in the all Ireland hurling final. This game was highly anticipated after the drawn game a week previous and it really lived up to all the expectations of the fans, with some hard hits and unbelievable skill. I commentated from 3.44 to 6.47
Well done again to Dee and his teacher, Ms Hyland!!

Hello, The closing date for the Wiggle Store is June 3rd. After this, you can still place an order for any year group, but there will be a €50 Late Fee added on. Here is the link and our own Store code: www.wriggle.ie/OnlineStoreLogin Our School Store Code is 02742671
Again, it seems most classes in the coming school year will be done from home. That is the prediction coming from DES discussions and it makes sense to us here on the ground. All students will need a device for education. And it will be far more intensive teaching than this last 11 weeks when it happened with little warning. Nobody was 100% ready for it, but it is our duty to inform you this side of the summer what may be needed in September.
For any school day which a student is at home, classes will be from 9-4 - live teaching, according to the school timetable. So they will not be choosing their time off, nor if they wish to participate. The 2020-21 school year must make the strongest and the best start that we can facilitate. We will keep you informed on this app of any developments. Thank you.

Greetings to one and all, here's hoping you are in good health and enjoying the glorious weather we've been having.
Sadly our TY programme screeched to a halt on March 12th and we've all had to come to terms with a new working environment caused by the Corona pandemic. Notwithstanding this crisis, we hope you have enjoyed all that our TY programme had to offer up to this point and that you have gained new insights since March by practising the skills you honed in TY such as self motivation etc.
This week we should have celebrated your TY graduation in the presence of your families and staff members. However we are fully committed to hosting a graduation and awards ceremony when it is safe to do so.
On behalf of Ms. Gillson and myself, we would like to thank you for the cooperation and commitment throughout the year, and we wish you well for the Leaving Cert cycle. Also we would like to acknowledge the support of your parents, the staff, and management of the CBS
Finally, TY is all about making memories, so here are just a few:
