1st year IT training

For those who have a non-Wriggle device at home, who want to load their ebooks on to them and use at home, you can bring those devices with you to training on Tuesday. The teacher trainer will help you do so. To repeat what is the difference between the non-Wriggle and the Wriggle purchased ipads, it is the management system which controls them and allows the class teachers to keep an eye on each student is viewing/doing from the top of the class. The non-Wriggle ipads don’t have this, leaving them open to lots of distractions and unwelcome apps.
Book Rental Information for all BR students-Important for all to read

1st Year Students and parents should collect their Book Rental bundles in the school at 1pm on Monday 24th August - as they are leaving the Induction. You are advised to bring a bag. Anyone who has moved from Book Rental to iPad in 2nd or 3rd year may hold onto their book rental books until they receive their Wriggle delivery of texts. I do not know when that will be, as many are late orders. They will be delivered to your house. Anyone who left their book rental books in their lockers and didn't collect them is responsible to the school for their value/return - as per the original agreement made when they were given to you in 1st and 2nd year. If you are in 2nd or 3rd year and left your book rental books in your locker and didn't collect them (the lockers are all packed into the containers now_ you need to contact Mr Mulligan by email and tell him. cyrilmulligan@portlaoisecbs.com) 2nd years will be moving into either Higher or Ordinary level Maths in September. These texts will be available through BR when the classes are divided and decided. Do nothing for the moment. Thank you.
Reminder to anyone attending school who has travelled abroad

Dear Principal, Please find information for anyone attending school who has travelled abroad. Reminder to anyone attending school who has travelled abroad: Government policy, which is based on official public health advice, continues to advise against non-essential travel overseas for everyone. It is a requirement for anyone coming into Ireland, from locations other than those with a rating of ‘normal precautions’ (“green”), to restrict their movements for 14 days, and this includes school staff, parents and children or other students coming from abroad to attend school in Ireland. Restricting your movements means staying indoors in one location and avoiding contact with other people and social situations as much as possible. Regards, Reopening Schools Section

Message for all Parents - there is a lot of info here for all year groups

Hi all, I've been quiet on the App for the last week, as we've been very busy making decisions and acting on the Guidelines which the Government is sending to us regularly. Many guidelines have been updated several times, even within the last week, and the recent lockdown in Laois has put a different angle on what the situation may be by Aug 31st, when all students have returned to school. To give you some indication of how the return is being planned, I'm putting up what's happening each day for the two weeks, beginning on Monday 24th August. Further details of times for the 1st years will be given in a message on it's own tomorrow, Monday. Mon, August 24 - First Year Induction for all 1st yrs 10-1pm. They will learn their class groups and meet their Meitheal leaders for a few hours of ice breaking and finding their way around the school. Wear comfortable clothing, not uniform. Just bring a drink/snack. SEN/ASD have their additional Induction in the afternoon. They can remain in school with their own pack lunch or go home to return from 2-4pm Tues, August 25 - IT Training for all 1st years. All students will receive their school email, login to the school PC's, start to get an intro to working with Microsoft 365 Apps, emails, etc. Those who have an iPad will have an additional time after the full year group training. If, by chance, someone's iPad has not been delivered, due to being a late order, we will provide them with one for this training, so don't stress about that. Wed, August 26 - Teachers Training and Meetings - no students Thurs, August 27 - Teachers' Training and Meetings - no students Fri, August 28 - all 1st years come in - only bring the €30 for the Homework Journal, locker and Wellbeing Journal. The WB Journal will be given out at another time. Please put money in an envelope with student name and amount on the outside. Preferably pay online before the day. They only need to bring a pen. They will get their locker, lock and new JW Journal. No books, no iPads. This week, August 31 to September 4th, consists of all half days from 9am - 1.15. No lunch breaks. Just staggered 'small' breaks. No buses home till 4pm (possibly, not confirmed) Monday August 31st - All 1st years and 6th years are in each day this week 9-1.15. 6th years bring the €10 for HW Journal (preferably prepay online), have a pen and wear full uniform. Bring snack/drink. Timetables will be given that day. First years will be told on Friday 28th what to bring on Monday 31st . They will go to their classes, as per their timetables, but they will also be getting used to the school while it is less than half full. They will learn some IT every day through the use of pre-made videos in their teachers' classes which they can also access at home in their own time. This week will be a settling in period for our 1st years, so that, God forbid, we have to close at some stage, that they have had time in their new school - meeting their teachers, learning the new hygiene regime in place, how to learn remotely if that does happen, and have a sense of identity with being a student of St Mary's CBS - but getting to feel that when it is a fairly quiet school. The 6th years will be in every day once they begin, but only until 1.15. They need to get down to work immediately. In addition to the Staff Covid training which must take place, the staff have a lot of preparation and changes to make, which will be scheduled for each afternoon. We have to front load all planning, training and preparation, by both students and staff, to these two weeks in order to meet whatever challenges we meet in the following weeks. Tues 1st Sept - 3rd years just in one day from 9-1.15. Bring the €10 for HW Journal (preferably prepay online), have a pen and wear full uniform. Bring snack/drink. Timetables will be given that day. 3rd years return on Friday.(9-1.15) Wed 2nd Sept -5th years just in one day from 9-1.15. Bring the €10 for HW Journal (preferably prepay online), have a pen and wear full uniform. Bring snack/drink. Timetables will be given. 5th years return on Friday.(9-1.15) Thurs 3rd Sept - 2nd years just in one day from 9-1.15. Bring the €10 for HW Journal (preferably prepay online), have a pen and wear full uniform. Bring snack/drink. Timetables will be given. 2nd years return on Friday.(9-1.15) Fri 4th Sept - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th years (not TY's) come in on Friday 9-1.15. The buses will be running at 1.15, as normal. Mon 7th Sept – TY’s come in for their first day. All classes in from 9-4pm. A few notes of information for the coming year: You must bring your own drinks, the water fountains will not be available for drinking from; There is no Rafters Canteen for the forseeable future; all food must be brought into school; Students are encouraged to have a small sanitiser bottle for their own use; Masks seems to be compulsory where social distancing is less than 2 metres. These guidelines may change; Classrooms are being re-arranged and lockers removed to meet the social distancing recommendations; The breaks and lunch times will go according to the split timetable we have adapted. Approximately half the students will have their break at 10-10.15 and their lunch from 12.15-1.00. The other half will have their morning break at the usual times of 11-11.15 and lunch from 1.15-2. The 6th years and the 1st years will follow the same split in the timetable, to enable the Meitheal students support the 1st years during break and lunch times, which is their most important and regular times for contact. There is a strict one way system in the corridors and stairwells for all to follow; There is a level of responsibility expected from all students and we hope that parents talk with their sons about the implications for all of us, at home and in school, if they ignore the new school practices being put in place for everyone's health and safety. An Appendix to the Code of Behaviour will be approved by the Board before return to school. We are meeting with the Parents Council this week to discuss this and other relevant matters. When approved, the Appendix will be on the App for all to keep informed. Uniforms - some talk has been going around of washing uniforms every day. It is worth noting that during the cooler and wetter weather in the last 6 months, we all wore jackets, jumpers, outer wear wherever we went - these weren't washed on a daily basis I'm sure. So washing the uniform every day doesn't make sense either. However, we will allow students to wear their own clothes on WEDNESDAYS ONLY, to give time for the uniforms to be washed and dried. This does not include the wearing of earrings and headgear; PE Gear - we will allow students to change and put their clothes into their own sports/gear bags for PE. We had suggested wearing PE gear to school for PE, but have decided against it. For today, this is enough information for you to plan the next few weeks around. If you know anyone who doesn’t have the App, please tell them they need to get it now. Or if having difficulty accessing it, please tell them to ring the office, ask for Elaine and she will sort it. Office Hours 9-4. Thank you all for your time.
1st year Tech Graphics Materials

There has been a few queries this afternoon about the Tech Graphics Board which is on the Book List. Somehow the idea that this is an expensive item is incorrect. We apologise for any confusion that this has caused. The TG teachers intended that all students will have a board at home large enough to take an A2 sheet of paper. This is for doing their TG homework. Students can also wait until they come into school and the teacher will sort it with them. Do not buy any board which costs more than 10 euros. If you can't find one, leave it until you come into school.
Clearing out your lockers

Most lockers have been emptied. Thank you to all of you who have been in school and done so. Tomorrow, Friday, is the last chance you will have to clear out your belongings. The school closes at 5.30 and when leaving please sign out and write the time you left on the sheet so the caretakers know you’ve left the building. On Monday all downstairs lockers will be moved to the containers we have bought for storage. God only knows when they will be brought out of storage, so don’t expect to see your belongings for another year or more! Thank you.

Refunds given on book rental if changing to ipads

Good evening. Any incoming 1st year parent who has opted for Book Rental but wishes to change to iPads, can receive a full refund within days by emailing the Principal at mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com. If your son is going into 2nd year with book rental, but wishes to change to iPad, I will refund the €100 you have paid for the 2nd year extra books plus half the original fee you paid in 1st year. He would receive all new printed books from Wriggle for 2nd year along with the ipad and ebooks and could return the book rental ones to us. So you will be refunded €200 towards the cost of an iPad and still get the printed books. If he is going into 3rd year and you are interested in same, please contact myself/Mr Cahillane and we will arrange a similar refund of €200. Also you will pay less for the book licenses, school management and other charges due to it being for 1 year to JC. Then he’ll have it for the Leaving Certificate. Have a think. And a nice weekend. In Laois. Contact: pcahillane@portlaoisecbs.com
