As two of our teachers retire today...

Today, Ms Louise Gillson and Ms Eadaoin O'Connell leave St Mary's CBS as they retire from the classroom and begin a new, more relaxed way of life. Both Ms Gillson and Ms O’Connell have shared much in common during their careers in our school. They both taught English and History and both have been Transition Year Coordinators. Many students will remember them for the many trips and activities they have taken part in outside the classroom, the musicals, their energy and enthusiasm in working with their students and always the drive to push students to reach their own potential. “When you enlist you must soldier” was Ms Gillson’s famous mantra, and this was the banner under which both teachers measured themselves. Their absolute commitment to their students, their refusal to allow a student to do less than they were capable of and their enthusiasm for constantly learning new things marked them out as true professionals, and a credit to our teaching profession. Both ladies will be so missed by both students and colleagues. We wish them many years of health and happiness, more time to enjoy the good things in life and most importantly, time to spend with their loved ones. What you have brought to Tower Hill and the Borris Road school during your time spent here cannot be measured and will certainly never be forgotten. Thank you for the memories Louise and Eadaoin.

Anyone who ordered an ipad for their son during August but has not received the ipad and all the printed books should email me with your son's name and the date you placed the order. If you have the Order Number to give me, it would be helpful. This will be followed up with Wriggle. Anyone who has ordered the 2nd year Irish and Maths ebooks through Wriggle and was charged a Late fee, please email me as well. mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com. We made that deal months ago that no Late fee would be applied to this September Store and it mistakenly was. They have come back to me today informing me that this error has been rectified and there is no Late Fee for the Irish and Maths texts for 2nd years. But if you have been charged, please email me with the relevant info like your son's name, the date ordered, order number, subject level ordered. Thank you to the parent who alerted me to this error. Statement from the Minister for Education Norma Foley TD and the Department of Education and Skills regarding Leaving Certificate 2020 Calculated Grades Process

www.education.ie/en/Press-Events/Press-Releases/2020-press-releases/PR20-09-30.html Dear Principal, This is to advise you that the Minister for Education and Skills today issued a statement relating to the Leaving Certificate 2020 Calculated Grades Process. A copy of this statement can be found here - please click on the above link. The statement relates to two errors that the Department has found in the Calculated Grades process. These errors led to incorrect grades having been issued to some students when they received their results on 7 September. The errors are being rectified and the process is being re-checked, including a series of independent checks, by US-based organisation Educational Testing Service (ETS), which specialises in educational measurement, which is also now in train. It is expected that this process will be completed over the coming days, at which time contact will be made by the Department with students. It will not be possible to identify the affected students unless this process has been completed. The Department’s checks have indicated that this will mean that some students will be receiving a higher Calculated Grade in one or more subjects than the grades they received on 7 September. The precise number of students who will receive higher grades will not be available until the process is completed, but it is likely to be in the region of 6,500, or just over 10 per cent of the 61,000 who received their results. The number of grades involved will equate to approximately two per cent of the grades issued. The majority of students affected will receive an upgrade in one subject only. No student will receive a reduced grade in any subject as a result of this process. This matter is deeply regretted by the Minister and the Department and they apologise sincerely to each student impacted for these errors, and the upset and distress they have caused. The Department has put in place a helpline for students which is now open and will be operated up to Sunday 04 October. The helpline number is 01 8892199. Updated information has also being posted at www.gov.ie/leavingcertificate. An email address for queries is also available at LC2020@education.gov.ie Yours sincerely, Curriculum and Assessment Policy Unit, Department of Education and Skills.

We have recently opened our Solas ASD Centre for Autism with two classes and twelve students. Autism is something which not all people are informed about. We see it as part of the holistic education we deliver in the CBS to make all our students aware of how our autistic students may see, hear, understand, and live in this world of ours. What people do not understand may sometimes lead to ignorance, bullying and hurt. Education is our key to understanding and cooperation. This webinar will be shown to all year groups on Thursday 1/10 during one of their classes.

A graduation celebration has been organised for the class of 2020 on Thursday the 24th of September at 5:30pm sharp in O’Moore Park. The graduation committee, organised by Ms Martina Murphy, wishes to give our Leaving Cert students of 2020 a chance to celebrate their time with us in St. Mary’s CBS. Tomorrow evening students are invited to come and mark the end of their 5 or 6 years in the school. Mr Walsh has organised for our three prestigious awards- Student of the Year, Martin Conroy and From Each His Best to be awarded on the evening. The celebration has been organised in line with all government guidelines on COVID-19. The class of 2020 must wear a mask, use the hand sanitising stations on the premises and strictly adhere to social distancing at all times. As we are restricted in numbers ONLY the class of 2020 can attend. No parents, siblings or friends as this would push numbers over our limit. As our venue is a sporting one there is a strict no parking rule behind O’Moore Park as there are a number of games on tomorrow evening. If possible students are asked to get dropped off and collected or please park to the front of the venue on the Abbeyleix road or down towards Telfords.
