DigiWiz - TY Robotics Workshop
Created : 10 Feb 2021, 3:07 PM
Archived : 10 Apr 2021, 12:00 AM
On Tuesday our TY students got the opportunity to work with DigiWiz and build a DIY Remote Controlled Walking Dog! Students had a DIY package posted to their homes and then engaged in an online workshop with DigiWiz instructors. For most of the students this was their first taster in working with Robotics, but the positive feedback has ensured we will look to have more Robotics workshops available in the calendar year. Hopefully we will get to do the next one in person and organise a race for those who think they have what it takes! Well done lads! How it works: When the button on the wire control box is pressed down, the motor will be electrified and rotate. It drives four rockers to rotate through a set of gear reducing mechanisms, making the dog’s leg move forward alternately. The wire control box changes the output’s positive and negative anode via two buttons. It controls the motor’s direction of rotation with changing of electricity’s direction, thus controlling the dog’s advance and retreat.

Gary Young O’Shea and Luke Walsh pitched their project on visual impairment to a DEN panel made up of YSI coordinators along with Tim Butler (Virgin Media), Paul Kelly (Unilever) and Mary Roche (Tusla). The boys performed very well, and the panel described their project as a ‘legacy project’ and were very impressed with the teams knowledge and research in the area. The boys managed to secure both funding and mentor ship to support them as they progress through their project. Congratulations to Gary, Luke and all the boys on the team.

Updated Decision about the Mock Exams for 3rd & 6th Years
Created : 09 Feb 2021, 3:52 PM
Archived : 09 Apr 2021, 12:00 AM
As there still seems to be no information forthcoming from the Department of Education about returning to school, and being aware of the stress which this is causing our 3rd and 6th year students, we have decided to put off any decision about holding the Mocks, at least until the Department give clear guidance on the date of your return. All of our earlier decisions were made after considering the many pros and cons of this situation, many which exist every year around Mocks. Our aim at the time was to provide a short term focus for lads to work towards and allow them to take their heads out of the constant media chatter confusing everyone. We are in total agreement that Mocks are always best done in school. We don't know when we are returning to school yet, nobody has said a word, even as of this afternoon, when it was meant to be announced. We hear now it could be Friday before an announcement will be made! It is still our intention, as it stands, to do Mocks, and our first choice is to do them in person. It always has been. We will not do the Mocks on February 22nd. We won't do online Mocks at all. We will first wait and see what date you are allowed to return to school. As per usual, we will hold an Assembly to consider student voice on the first day back. I hope that this allays any unnecessary concerns or stress you were feeling about upcoming Mocks. Any monies paid towards the Mocks will be held until a final decision is made about them. If, by chance, they are cancelled altogether, all monies will be fully refunded. We would still advise you to keep up your studies. It is the best insurance policy you have for being prepared for whatever the Government decides in the coming weeks. Anyone who is experiencing stress or has concerns about their mental health, should contact our Guidance Department: guidance@portlaoisecbs.com.

Students logging into classes from Monday morning

Good evening. I am aware of some confusion as to what way a student should log into their classes, as there are currently two ways which teachers do this. We ended up with two systems due to some technical difficulties at the start. Those are all sorted. From tomorrow morning, teachers will begin scheduling all their classes on the Teams Calendar - your son will see these on his own Teams Calendar and can Join from there. If it's not running that way for the first class or two it will be after 11am. If that is the case, your son can just return to doing whatever his teacher did last week until everyone adopts the same system by mid-morning. We hope having just one system used by all will alleviate some of the emails and calls to the office. Some parents were under the impressions that if the Teams Calendar had very little on it for the week ahead, that the teachers weren't doing classes which was incorrect. Some lads may also have allowed their parents to believe so, which was also incorrect! We are all looking forward to the Midterm Break and a break away from screens of all sizes. Anyone who is engaging with the online learning is finding it far more intense than being in school. And doing it around a table with other family members must be a nightmare. There are many big questions to be answered this week. We do expect some substantial decisions to be announced on Tuesday evening as the Cabinet are meeting that day. The talks which have taken place all week with all stakeholders expect to bring something to the Cabinet that day. We will look forward to that, whatever it may be. We will have a Staff Meeting this Wednesday, February 10th, starting at 2pm. There will be no classes on Wednesday afternoon. Teachers may put up work for students to do, but there are no scheduled classes. Not being in the same building since before Christmas leaves us with many updates and future planning to get through, as I'm sure you can imagine. Have a good week all. MM

Focus Ireland & TY - Camino de Quarantine.

Focus Ireland have a virtual event that they are currently running with TY students, teachers & parents – Camino de Quarantine. The Transition Year students in our school are going to take part in this online fundraiser, as well as many members of staff. We would love if some parents and the wider school community would also come on board. What is it? It is an interactive Camino walk, students can virtually walk/run 114km along the French way section of the Camino de Santiago. Students walk within their own 5km, and track it using the Strava app (free to download on their mobile device) or can log their activity manually on their fundraising page, use their Fitbit/steps etc. It is self-paced, so students can complete the walk in their own time and also see how each other is doing. Badges and milestones are collected and recorded along the interactive map. For more in depth information, see HERE. To sign up Please create your own fundraising page by following this link - you can set your target to €10/€20, every little helps. virtualcamino.focusireland.ie/register We have already set up a school team fundraising page called "St Mary's CBS Portlaoise TY Fundraising Page" so after you set up your own fundraising page you click join team - see details below - Then when the students/teachers setup their own pages, at the end of the signup form they will click ‘join team’ and search for the team the team leader has already setup. If they make a mistake and skip over this step without creating a team or joining a team, on their page they click ‘Edit page’ and in the settings go to the ‘Team’ tab. This is a fantastic opportunity to give a little back in aid of Focus Ireland and for us to do so together as a school community. Many teachers are already registered including Ms Kelly, Ms Brennan, Mr Brennan, Mr Dunne, Ms Comerford, Ms Williams, Ms Mulhare, Ms Lynch, Ms Lewens, Ms Moore, Ms McCann, Ms Carroll and many more. Our TY students are registering today and may be reaching out for support on their challenge. There are over 9,000 children, families and individuals tackling homelessness in Ireland right now. Please help us fight this crisis by supporting Focus Ireland. Thank you for your continued support, Ms Hyland, Mr Cahillane and Mr Byrne
