Well done to Ms Lewens and her TY group for organising the Christmas collection for P.A.T.H. The T.Y’s asked their teachers and fellow students for donations to make up packs for those who had fallen on hard times. The response to the appeal was phenomenal. Today the students donated over 200 care packages for the homeless, along with food donations and presents for families in need. The P.A.T.H representatives were thrilled with the packages and told the boys their donations would go to not only the homeless in Dublin but local families in need. Thank you to all who donated. A special word of thanks to Hughes Pharmacy main st. Portlaoise who donated a substantial box of personal hygiene products for the appeal. If anyone wishes to make further donations of packages to P.A.T.H. you can drop your donations into the parish centre in Portlaoise, located on the grounds of the church car park. Well done once again to all involved!

Today our TY students took part in an interactive law course to bring the world of law into our classrooms. The class groups completed 8 modules in The Law Uncovered throughout the day - the course allows you to learn about how the law in Ireland affects you as a young person through engaging interactive content, case scenarios, quizzes, activities, videos and a webinar. Because everyone needs to know the law - not just lawyers! The boys really enjoyed their day and are looking forward to completing the remainder of the course at home in order to receive the certificate. Some great preparation for our Mock Trial days in a few weeks time.

College awareness week began today and will run nationally until the end of the week. Our theme this year is "College Pathways and Opportunities". We are adopting a whole-school and cross-curricular approach to running this year's college awareness week. We have organised activities for each year group: First Years: Guidance Counsellors will visit first year classes. The topic for first years is Imagining yourself going to college. Second Years: Dream and imagine our future .This will be delivered through the SPHE classes. 3rd year- My exploration of careers. This will be delivered through the SPHE classes. 4th Years: Subject Choice. We will look at senior cycle subject choice and how this choice can influence upon career pathways. 5th Years- Looking at Third Level opportunities. Virtual guest speakers from St. Pats College Carlow, St. Pats College Maynooth, 6th Years- Guiding the way- workshops for Leaving Certificate students. As part of a whole school approach to college awareness week we would like to make parents/guardians aware of a website which offers webinars on specific subject areas and potential career opportunities from such subjects. The website is www.synergycareers.ie/workshops/ . We would be delighted if you could encourage discussion around potential careers your son might be aspiring too. This is a great opportunity to discuss T.Y or 5th for third year students, as well as what subjects your son might be considering for Leaving Certificate examination. If you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to contact any member of the guidance team at guidance@portlaoisecbs.com.
