TY Programme - Remote Learning Update

With schools back to remote learning this week, there has been a slight change of plan to the activities involved in the TY Calendar. All TY students will be asked to attend a live lesson on Tuesday at 2pm through our Transition Year 20/21 Teams classroom. During this lesson I will explain the plan for the January activities and the overall plan for the remainder of the school year including what is expected of the students come the end of school year in terms of TY assessments. Outside of regular timetabled classes, TY students will have the opportunity to engage with the following throughout the month of January: - CV building Workshops - Numerous opportunities to gain industry recognised certifications in Career Development, Driving Skills and Safety, Personal Development and Computer skills through our new partnership with IACT. - Access to complete their Microsoft Office Specialist training and exams in Word, PowerPoint and Excel through the facilitation of their teachers. - The Microsoft Dreamspace programme throughout January and beyond which will bring students on a learning journey with a focus on computational thinking, creativity & problem-solving. - The Drivers Ed Programme: the online component of the programme which was developed to teach students the fundamentals of driving and to foster responsible attitudes and driving behaviours. The physical aspect e.g. Drive a Vehicle with a Qualified Instructor/ Change Wheels Safely/ Use Sat Navigation Systems will take place later in the year. - Theory Test Practice - High Profile Guest Speakers who will speak about their careers, advice for students and the opportunities for young adults in their industries. Any student who is saying that they don't have their login details for Microsoft Teams should email Mr Geoff Brennan, our IT Coordinator and iPad Coordinator since mid-December. Mr Cahillane is no longer the IT Coordinator or the iPad Coordinator. Mr Brennan has taken on both of these very busy roles. His email is gbrennan@portlaoisecbs.com. During Sept/Oct/Nov all students were reminded time and time again to be sure they did have their logins and to see Mr Cahillane to sort it out if they didn't. So there really shouldn't be many who have to look for their details now.

Good evening everyone, we will begin online teaching and learning from tomorrow and I am bumping up this notification to this evening for those who missed it on Friday.. Here are a few guidelines for you and your sons to be aware of: 1. We will be following the school timetable, the VSware timetable from 9am - 4pm each day. All students are expected to login from 9am on Monday to Microsoft Teams. 2. There is a pdf document attached to this notification outlining the behaviour and practices which all students are expected to follow. All parents and students should read these before Monday morning. 3. Many students do have access to some device on which they can login to Microsoft Teams. If there is a family who have no device for their Leaving Certificate student to use for their online learning, please email Mr Geoff Brennan at gbrennan@portlaoisecbs.com stating your son's name, year, what he used last year during 5th year, and what device is has shared access to at this moment. We have a number of student devices, but there would never be one for everyone or one for even a third of the LC's so the priorities will be given to those without any device in the home, and for 6th years before anyone else. Smart phones count as a device, they may not be ideal but they do provide a way to follow assignments, etc. 4. If you do feel your son has no other option but to borrow a school ipad, there will be an agreement between the parent/guardian and the school which would have to be signed/agreed to for the condition of the ipad when returning it to the school later in the year. Obviously, the long term aim of having student devices is that they give a few year's service to those who need them. 5. Decisions on who will get access to a school ipad will not be made until the middle of next week. I will keep you in the loop, when I do receive information. Please encourage your sons to engage fully with their online lessons and to submit their work to their teachers as requested. This is school at the moment, there is no point in waiting for a normal to return, this is now normal. As some of you will be out working, I understand it is a big ask to presume they will all be tuned in and fully engaged in school, but we have to encourage and hope for the best. 2020 LC Student Honoured by UL Scholarship based on LC Results in CBS

We have received notice from the University of Limerick to advise us that our past pupil JORDAN IKPOMWEN has been awarded one of the UL40 Scholarship Awards which was open to all entrance students. The UL40 Scholarships are awarded to incoming students who began their undergraduate studies in the Autumn Semester for the Academic 2020 and is based on their performance in the Leaving Certificate and determined by their CAO points. The scholarships are valued at €2,000 each and they are funded by the University of Limerick, in recognition of its 40 years in existence as an educational institution. We are very proud of Jordan who was an exemplary student, and always a gentleman, during his six years in the CBS. We wish him all the best in his future studies and whatever his chosen career path will be.
New Geography teacher in 6th year

As you read before Christmas on this App, Ms Shelly Conroy has been seconded to PDST for the remainder of this school year. I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce her replacement, Mr Eoin Lowry, who will take over Ms Conroy's Geography and Religion classes from Monday morning at 9am. All students of Ms Conroys can be assured that their curriculum will be continued and they will be prepared for all their exams, project work etc by Mr Lowry. As it is always a difficult start to begin in the middle of the year with any class group, it will take some time for Mr Lowry to get to know his students, moreso that it is online. I'm sure our students will show Mr Lowry the gentlemen they always are and extend both a warm welcome and full commitment to all his classes.

Hi, no doubt the questions are flying around your heads, and those of your sons/daughters - what will happen to my practicals, my projects, will there be Mocks, what about orals, etc. Today I have no answers for either you or our teachers who have the very same questions. We need to get the online teaching/learning up and running from Monday at 9am. Those other very important issues will have to be considered and decisions made in the coming weeks. When I know, you will know, on this App. Unfortunately, Principals don't get any inside track on announcements but you will be kept as informed as possible once I get information. I just wanted to acknowledge your very real concerns in this time of confusion and uncertainty.

Mr Cahillane is the new TY and LCVP Coordinator. He has been working on a plan for online courses to keep the TY lads busy and engaged in the coming weeks. This he is sharing on Microsoft Teams - what certification they will receive, what courses they will be doing, what the Tuesday afternoon activities will be, etc. He will also put it up on this App next week.
