Update: Mock Exams for 3rd & 6th Years

The following is our plan, based on Covid-19 Guidelines in coming weeks:
It is our intention to run both LC and JC Mocks this term, with our heaviest priority being that the Leaving Cert Mocks do take place.
Our first wish is that they be done in person, in a desk, in school, according to whatever public health guidelines may exist at that time;
If the students are not allowed back into school before March 1st, we plan to hold and complete the Mocks by Tuesday, March 16th ONLINE.
We know how confused and anxious our 6th years are. While we are not able to provide any concrete plan for the final LC Exam in June, we can, this evening, give you the definite plan that YOU WILL DO YOUR MOCK EXAMS IN ALL YOUR SUBJECTS EITHER IN PERSON OR ONLINE BY ST PATRICK'S DAY (approx 3-16 March). Now at least you have something to work towards and get your heads into. Let the Government and NPHET argue away about everything else. You now have a short term plan for yourself.
While we are keenly aware of the financial concerns many families have at this time, it will be necessary for families to pay for the exams and the marking of same, as per the 6th year Booklist last June. I think that this year, more than years previous to 2020, the importance of the Mock Exams, as a benchmark of a student's attainment, is terribly important. In the event of there being Calculated Grades, the Mocks will be one of the components taken into account by teachers at the end of the year. Otherwise, it is an important short term focus for our students to keep them from floating adrift and a confirmation for themselves and their teachers of what more needs to be done. It will hopefully relieve some of their stress by removing one of the big questions they are asking this month.
The risk of cheating is one we have to take, we are talking about the responsibility of young adults working from home. If a student wants a sound indicator of where he is in his subjects, we know he will act with integrity.
Our first wish for JC students is that they also have something robust, such as their Mock Exams, to focus them in the short term. Again, public health advice will dictate. We have not yet made any decisions about the Junior Certs. When we do, you will be informed through this app. Thank you. Have a nice evening.
Very Important-Monday 25th January-No classes

Even though schools are 'closed' but school is still online, next Monday our online school will also be closed. All our teachers will be taking part in their own JCT (Junior Cert Teacher) Training - in normal times it would be our school's annual Cluster Day. So there will be no online classes on Monday 25 January. Whatever work teachers have left up on Teams to be done, students can do that day in their own time. Online classes will return on Tuesday 26th january at 9am. Apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

5th Year subject Options Info Night this Thursday 18th March
Created : 15 Mar 2021, 10:27 PM
Archived : 19 Mar 2021, 12:00 AM
This Thursday we will hold an Information Evening for Parents and Students on Microsoft Teams, beginning at 7pm. Our Career Guidance Team will present the background information to how your son should make his choices, what needs to be kept in mind for future paths, the relevance of keeping on a language, the need to have a balance of science and other subjects, to allow for change of minds in the future, and more.
The Option Form will need to be completed within the following ten days and this will also be explained on the night. As students are not in school until April 12th, we will have the Option Form on the School App. It will be submitted by the end of next week, March 26th.
All parents should have the App and check it daily. If there is a notification it shows up on the main notification page on the lower right hand side as a triangle with 'Attention Please' written beside it - this means that there is a form or message for you as a parent to give your attention to. Such as a Covid Return to School Form or a 5th year Option Form to complete and submit.
There are also powerpoints, teacher videos and pdf's which will be on the school website and on the App from Thursday evening. These will give further explanation as to how a particular subject is broken down into for example, practical and written, or what career paths the subject will lead to. So there is lots of information available for students and parents to access after the Information Night itself, when families have their chats about decisions to be made and dreams to be fulfilled.
If you have to miss the Teams night itself, it will be recorded for your information. To be found on the App and website on the days following. We hope you will find it all useful and informative. Thank you.

Please complete and submit the Return to School Form under 'Consent Forms' before your son comes to school. No student is allowed to enter the school without submitting this. We will have to ring you and ask you to complete and submit before we can let him attend his classes. This is an important part of the Covid-19 Guidelines which we must follow. Your cooperation is appreciated. Thank you. MM

We are coming to the end of our first week of online learning in 2021. Hopefully students, parents and teachers are becoming accustomed to their new routines and the online learning platforms. We are here to assist with this process and this notice will address some issues which arose throughout the week.
1. To avoid any confusion the attached link explains in detail how students join their online classes. This may be useful for both parents and students alike.
portlaoisecbs-my.sharepoint.com/:v:/p/gbrennan/EdW4rxpdfnFOutzTKvdIYEcBhsQh_rRHIVSGmvvBNTK9sQ?e=1QZcIm
2. Students are not permitted to have profile pictures attached to their Microsoft Teams accounts. Any student who has altered their profile photo must remove it.
3. Students are reminded to follow their VSware timetable for each class and not their Teams calendar. Some online classes will be pre scheduled in the calendar tab while others will be organised live. Students can access both by entering into their respective class group on Teams and clicking join on the purple meeting icon.
4. Students are reminded to ensure they have downloaded the correct apps (updated versions) onto their device before their lessons. These may include OneNote, OneDrive, Office Lens etc
5. For further help please see the folder of Helpful Teams videos attached below:

If you need to collect books or belongings...

Anyone who needs to collect books or belongings from the school can do so any day between 9-5. If the door of the room you need access to is locked, please walk around to find a cleaner, Mr Thompson or Mr Mulligan who can open it for you. Please be sure to wear your mask properly and sanitise upon entering. There is a sign-in/out sheet near main door and it's important to write down the room number of the room you are going to, so its surfaces will be disinfected by the cleaners. (to find room number RF/RG - see School Map near entrance to corridor/stairwell near sign-in desk.)Thank you.
Online learning notice to parents

A brief announcement for parents in relation to your son's online learning. To clarify any confusion, students are to follow their everyday VSware timetable and log on their Microsoft Teams for each lesson from 9am-4pm. Attendance will be taken by the teacher on VSware. Some lessons may be pre-scheduled and others will appear at the beginning of each class for your son to join. All students should ensure they have the most up to date version on the Teams app to avoid any missing features. Thank you.
