A busy week in TY- Microsoft, Stripe & Mindfulness Talks for students

Outside of the amazing work some of our teachers and students are engaging in by qualifying and competing in various regional and national competitions this week, our TY students also had a number of other opportunities available to them.
Microsoft Dream Space
For Transition Year students, this is a period of discovering their place in the world. Many are going to need some guidance and a little inspiration on their journey. We decided to bring our TY students on a virtual tour of One Microsoft Place before joining their team to spark curiosity and learn about the future of STEM and their role in it.
In the session, students were introduced to the types of jobs and skills that are required in Microsoft Ireland and the jobs of tomorrow. Students were then challenged to reimagine how these key skills work alongside technology and STEAM. The activities during the session were catered for our students in an online environment but it is our hope to travel to the Microsoft building later this year so students can immersive themselves in life at Microsoft Ireland!
A career in technology opens up a world of possibilities. It does not necessarily mean a life of coding. In DreamSpace they showed students how technology can set them on a path to doing what they love for a living and how they could make their dream job a reality.
Mindfulness Talk for Teenagers
Today, Louise Shanagher introduced students to mindfulness and self-compassion practices. The talk helps give students practical tools to help promote their positive mental health and wellbeing and in particular to help them manage stress and anxiety.
Louise is a children’s therapist, mindfulness teacher and psychology lecturer. She is the author of three books: The ‘Mindfully Me’ series, which is Ireland’s first series of mindfulness books for children.
Stripe TY Virtual Tour
Our TYs had an amazing opportunity this week by getting a chance to look into what life is like at Stripe. The tech company who build economic infrastructure for the internet were founded by Irish entrepreneur brothers John and Patrick Collison in Palo Alto, CA, in 2010.
Some of the schedule that was involved is set out below:
- Financial crimes/risk: Find out how we protect Stripe from bad actors wanting to launder their dirty money
- Transforming today’s thought into tomorrow’s reality — learn about how Stripe helps enable start-up’s to build and grow their businesses to a global stage
- People — Careers & development paths: How it started vs how it’s going
- Finance & strategy: Discover what it takes to run a world leading company
- Law & regulation: What does a lawyer do in a tech company?
