5th years- Applications to Repeat 5th Year

At this time of year, we are planning the subjects and classes for the 2021-22 school year. Current 3rd years and Transition Year students are presently selecting their option subjects this week as part of this process.
If there are any 5th year students and their parents who have been considering repeating 5th year as a plan for next September, the students should see Mrs Murphy between Wed and Friday of this week for an Application Form and also for the Subject Option Form to complete again. It is not an entitlement of any student to be allowed to repeat 5th year. The Department of Education & Skills questions the reasons of each and there is a limit as to the number allowed to do so in any school in any year.
The student will submit the 2 Forms and then meet with Mrs Murphy and one of the Deputy Principals in advance of being given approval. One important requirement is that the student continue to fully engage in their classes, exams, projects etc to the very end of 5th year. Anyone who sees it as a Pass to an early summer holiday will be required to continue into 6th year in September. Anyone who does not sit their final exams in May will not be repeating.
Repeating is difficult, it can be boring, repetitive by its very nature, friends move on without you, etc. There is also no guarantee that online learning will be finished this Easter. Just because a student did not do so well at the on line learning since January is no free pass into repeating - what if there's another few weeks or months of it next year? Anyone in college this year is still doing their college lectures and assignments online and mainly from home, and this is very much part of our future for the moment.
Thank you. MM

Please note that applications for School Transport for the new school year 2021/2022 are now opened. The deadline for applying for school transport is on the 30th April 2021
We would ask that you notify all parents if they have enrolled a new pupil for your school for the 2021/2022 academic year and require school transport that they log onto their account on www.buseireann.ie/ in the school transport section and apply for their student.
Please note, existing pupils already registered and using transport for your school, do not need to re-apply.
If they don’t already have an account on the Bus Eireann website they must register one where they will need an email and a password and will then be able to apply for their student.
It is very important that they apply before the deadline of the 30th April 2021 as applications applied for after the deadline may not get a seat.
If parents have any queries they can contact us through email on
st.athlone@buseireann.ie or by telephone on 090 6473277
Regards,
Bus Éireann School Transport Team, Athlone.

Message to Parents of all Students

When you open your app to read Notifications, there is a grey section across the lower screen. On that are 'Notification', 'Personal Notification' and 'Attention Please'. They are normally in black print. IF THERE IS A RED DOT OR WORDING IN RED it means there is something there for your son's year group which you should read.
Today, the 3rd and TY parents will soon see Personal Notification written in red with a red line under it. All the subject presentations and information prepared by our subject departments will be available this afternoon for you to read and consider in choosing subjects and completing the form.
The Attention Please should have a red dot which means if you click that it will take that same group of parents directly to the Subject Option Form.
Anyone who should not be getting either form or information will see nothing but the usual black words on grey background.
All parents should keep a daily eye on this as we are using the form for submission of all documents and permissions in future. All those returning to school on April 12th will have to submit their son's Return to School form via the Attention Please notification. When it is available for completion, the weekend of April 10th, you will see the red dot and can find the form by clicking on it.
Thank you.

TY Update - The Fundamentals & SOAR
Created : 19 Mar 2021, 9:51 AM

Our Transition year students got to engage with two amazing workshops over the past two weeks - The Fundamentals and SOAR.. The workshops(which were planned for earlier in the year) were brought in to help lads develop personally, set goals suited to them and work towards fulfilling their potential!
The Fundamentals
The Fundamentals provides learning and training experiences to develop key skills and strategies in young people.
Their vision is centred around 3 particular aims;
Engage - We aim to meet students at their level, engaging them with material and activities that they find interesting and worthwhile.
Educate - We provide students with valuable strategies that they can use practically in team scenarios, leadership roles or sole personal development.
Enjoy - We enjoy our work and take huge pride in our students enjoying their sessions and workshops. We are committed to developing new activities and learning methodologies.
Soar
Soar is a collective movement which believes that there is greatness within all young people. They act on this by creating and delivering early intervention, character development workshops for young people aged 13 to 18 years from all backgrounds. Their workshops empower young people to thrive, believe in themselves and fulfill their true potential. Within a supportive environment, they are given the opportunity to be themselves and explore any challenges that hold them back from doing so and have worked with over 34,000 young people since 2012 !
Soar was founded in 2012 by Tony Griffin and Karl Swan. They were inspired by the work of Jim Stynes and The Reach Foundation in Melbourne Australia having seen the documentary “Every Heart Beats True: The Jim Stynes Story”. Soar is now led by a high performing Board of Directors and a tribe of wildly enthusiastic staff, facilitators and volunteers who care deeply about young people. The lads certainly didn't disagree as 100% of them recommended the workshop for next year!
The feed back suggests that both will certainly be booked in for our programme in 2021/22!
Well done to our TY film group!

Congratulations to our TY group who have qualified for the Heats of the prestigious Irish Film Festival. Their short film "Living with Depression", which aims to raise awareness of Mental Health among young people was screened, along with 22 others across the country, on Thursday 18th of March on the Irish Film Festival website.
The finals will be held online on Saturday the 20th of March.

Best of luck to the group which includes Sean Stafford, Jack Aherne, Ben Delaney, Kieran O Donnell, Ivan Okonkwo and Sean Maher.
Their film is available to watch on the school YouTube channel using the link below:

Fresh Film was originally a schools video competition for secondary students founded in 1997. It has since grown into a year round organisation with a focus on national and international filmmakers spanning the primary and secondary age groups. ‘Fresh International Film Festival’ has incrementally grown in scope in response to increasing numbers of entries and ‘Ireland’s Young Filmmaker Awards” now constitute three sections – Junior (7-12 years) – Senior (12- 18 years) and The International Young Filmmaker Awards. Each section is open to individual filmmakers, schools, youth and community groups in these age categories.
Well done to the boys on their great work!!
