6th Year Return to School

We are delighted to be welcoming back our 6th years next Monday after a very uncertain 6 weeks at home. Hopefully this is now a new beginning for the last lap of their Leaving Cert Course.
The Department of Education & Skills and the State Exams Commission have yet to furnish schools with definite information about practical components of the curriculum and if they will be part of the LC Examination. But some things we do know:
There are two clear grading systems: One is the Accredited Grading which all students will receive a mark from, from their teachers.
Two is the SEC LC Examination sat in June - this is optional and the student's own choice to opt in or not.
Students will receive both sets of results in September and can take the best mark of either system for each subject.
We cannot mix the exam components, for eg the orals, with the Accredited Grade which the teacher gives. The Orals were always strictly part of the SEC Examinations and will remain apart from the grades which a teacher will accredit to a student. Likewise, a student's classroom exams done since 5th year will be used for the Accredited Grades, but do not impact on the SEC Exam in June. This is normal practice each year.
Orals for the Exam LC will take place during the Easter holidays. These will not count towards the Accredited Grades, only towards the LC Examination. The SEC will mark them, but they will take place and be recorded in the local school.
There will be no fees payable for the 2021 exams and no fees for SEC Accredited Grades;
Results for both types of LC will be issues within the required time frame for progression to higher and further education in Ireland;
The Student Portal will open for registration during the week of 8 March to allow students to make their choice between examinations in June and/or to receive SEC Accredited Grades;
The SEC LC Timetables are available and these examinations will begin on 9th June 2021;
Completion schedules for the various types of coursework in many subjects will be issued to schools in coming weeks;
Please note, it will not be possible to mix elements of accredited grades with components of examinations.
All students will receive Accredited Grades. Even if they intend sitting all the SEC exams. This gives all students the best possible outcome for their final results;
School will end on May 14th for those not sitting the SEC Exam. Those preparing for the Exams will continue to May 28th.
Further details regarding both Leaving Certificate 2021 and Junior Cycle 2021 will be published at www.gov.ie/leavingcertificate and www.gov.ie/juniorcycle as they become
available.
We will meet all 6th years in their class groups when they return to school on Monday morning to discuss the Mock Exams. They do not have to happen, or happen in the usual way. Points for all students and parents to consider before then include:
1. The 2 weeks it takes out of class teaching time to run them; 2. the time it will take to receive the results back, probably mid April; 3. They cannot be used to calculate the Accredited Grades; 4. They do give students a chance to practice timing and selection of questions if they choose to sit the SEC Exams; 5. Not all students will want to do them nor would they be forced to. If they choose to sit Mocks, those students who don't sit the Mocks will remain in class, being taught by their teachers; 6. When they finish the Mocks they will be behind in their classes which have continued on during those 2 weeks; 7. Those not sitting Mocks will have to be taught for those 2 weeks, as time is precious, and remote teaching finishes when students return to school; 8. The possibility of students who genuinely wish to try out full length exams under proper timing and honest conditions could be given the exams to do themselves at home over Easter and we can send them away to be marked on April 12th; This is definitely a choice we will be offering students.
Everyone has an opinion, but a decision must be made for everyone's sanity by early next week. There are 9 weeks from March 1st to May 14th. There are 11 weeks to May 28th. Please consider the above points about the value of running 2 weeks of Mock exams during those precious 11 weeks. And how best that time can be used. And if there is any value when they can't be used for Accredited Grades and if those doing SEC Exam don't get results back till the end of April, and must catch up in their subjects. If anyone has paid for the Mocks and decide not to sit them, those monies will be repaid asap.
We will meet face to face, at last, in small class groups on Monday. A letter will be sent home to the parents by their sons that day with any further information we have and what our options are. We are trying to give all students the best possible choice we can. We are really looking forward to meeting with the lads on Monday morning. Thank you all for your continued patience, support and mental strength during what has been a very stressful time for all families. Take care, MM

Welcome back to this new term

Welcome back to what we hope will be a short period of remote learning and a welcomed reopening of the school itself for both students and staff. This morning we welcomed back our students in our 2 special classes in Solas. Next week, we look forward to the return of our 6th year students. Hopefully, they will be followed by the return of other year groups. That depends as we all know on the numbers and the advice given.
It was, no doubt, quite difficult this morning to get back into the iPad/laptop/phone screen and Teams after a week away. I hope you enjoyed your Midterm and got a break from the screens, headphones and online learning. We all long to see an end to this, it is becoming tedious. We also await dates of your return and for our Junior Certs, some clear guidance on how their 3 year course will be acknowledged and certified. Your group seemed to disappear between the stools, as they say, with all the talk about the Leaving Certificate in recent weeks.
As I've said before, when the nation hears Government announcements about schools reopening and State exam plans, the Principals hear it at the exact same time - on the RTE News. Strange but true. Hopefully Principals will be further briefed this week and if so, I will keep you informed. In the meantime, enjoy the spring like feeling in the air which is definitely there since yesterday. Take care, keep well, see you soon. MM

On behalf of the Management and Staff of our school, we want to say a big thank you to all parents, guardians and students who have worked so hard since we began remote learning on January 11th. We know it was not easy to get the lads out of bed,... to go no where! Nor was it easy to have a few of them looking for peace and quiet, for devices, for WIFI signal and you, meanwhile, looking for the same to get your own work done But you did. We all worked together to keep the lads on track and hopefully it won't be for much longer. Have a well deserved and relaxing ten days 'off screen'. Keep well.
