Request of all students and parents...

I hope you all had a pleasant and relaxing Halloween Break. I first want to thank everyone for their diligence and care in cooperating with our school's Covid-19 Response Plan in the first term. The lads have been remarkable, mature and compliant, far beyond anyone's expectations. Parents you can be proud of your sons.
As we return in the morning, I think I am within my role as Principal, and one who is responsible for everyone's health and safety in our school, to ask students who have been socialising and had close contacts during the week with others (outside of Covid-19 lockdown guidelines) to remain at home and sign into Teams for their classes. Please refer to NPHET Guidelines for Level 5 at this link for your clarification: www.gov.ie/en/publication/2dc71-level-5/
It is vital for all aspects of Irish life: economic, mental health, all those requiring medical care in our system, social, cultural, family and the upcoming Christmas that we all take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for our health and safety and make responsible decisions not to partake in activities outside of recommended guidelines. Many have made tough sacrifices, have lost health and loved ones and it is not over yet. But it can be done. It is about NOT BEING SELFISH.
We look forward to a good term in the run up to Christmas. The Pre-Mock Exams begin on Monday Nov 9th for 2 weeks and the other Christmas Exams begin after those. Dates to be provided this week. Take care, see you tomorrow. MM
Update on Sanitisers
Created : 01 Nov 2020, 12:38 PM
Archived : 01 Jan 2021, 12:00 AM
After a week of changing lists of approved and non-approved sanitisers, we have had to change out the product we were using over this weekend for a new approved one. Can I stress at this time that we purchased from the approved suppliers and from the approved list of products for that supplier in August, and purchased in good faith. When the 2 lists (approved/non-approved) were released last Thursday evening our product was on neither list. We followed this up on Friday morning with several phone calls which in turned raised flags and we were told to discontinue its use. Not because it had caused skin reactions but due to lack of certification, like the other products named.
With the welcome help of Jim Murphy of Hugh's Chemist Portlaoise, we were able to obtain a certified supply by Saturday afternoon which we have distributed to classrooms in bottle form and replaced the gel in all dispensers along the corridors and in public areas such as the GPA and lunch areas both upstairs snd downstairs. We expect to receive a large order by Tuesday morning which we can use to replace the old gel in all classroom dispensers. There is absolutely no fear of students/teachers accidentally using the original gel as the batteries in those dispensers have been removed and they won’t work. Only dispensers with new gel have batteries in place.
We hope this update relieves any anxieties you may have had over these last few days. As always, the safety and health of our students and staff remain our top priority.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

Good evening. I am sorry for the late message, but I think it is timely, with the week and the news that we are now living with.
This past week saw our first positive Covid-19 case in the school. The HSE were very supportive and helpful throughout the entire week in their dealings with us. I wish to make it very clear, that the HSE ask the questions and they make the call as to how we handle it. They did the initial risk assessment of the situation and how students/teachers interacted in our school and the protocols we had in place last Sunday afternoon. At that point, the Doctor said all the 5th years should remain home until testing had taken place.
Everyone was tested on or by Tues/Wed, the results were back on Friday, and all were negative. The HSE Doctor then did a review of the risk assessment. Because the tests were carried out on the 7th day, they were happy that a second test was not required. The student had been out of school for his early days, and they were counting Day 1 as October 7th. The tests are normally done on day 1 or 2 and the second test on Day 7 or thereabouts. When ours were negative on Day 7, the HSE were happy to narrow the risk assessment down to the 25 or so students who sat 1m away in the classes on Monday and Tuesday, Oct 5th and 6th.
That was when we emailed all parents of the two groups, Casual Contacts and Close Contacts, with the letter which the HSE provided us with for both. Unfortunately, some emails went into Junk or Spam and a few others were sent to the email addresses on our system, which were not the best ones. At this point, I will ask every single parent in the school to look up on VSware what the email address is that we have for our records - if you have changed the one you check regularly, please contact the school with the one you are most likely to read.
The HSE were satisfied that we have good robust systems in place to protect both our students and our staff. That it was in the school but did not spread was good confirmation of that. But we must maintain those measures. Tomorrow will be a new set of rules for the country and possibly for schools.
One clarification I'd like to make at this time are that teachers are not allowed to teach students at home if there are students in the classroom - it is a GDPR regulation, not a school rule. Tomorrow, we will have students back in the 5th year classes. If you son is not in school, he can get his work from Microsoft Teams, but he will not be able to tune into a class, for the reason just explained.
Finally I want to thank you all for your emails, your support, patience, cooperation and how you all handled last week. Hopefully, this week coming will be uneventful! Take care,
Maura Murphy
