Change of subjects

ASny 1st or 5th year student who is considering changing one of their option subjects, I strongly recommend that you do so within the next week. To give yourself the opportunity to catch up, it would be unwise to wait another few weeks.
There may still be 1 or 2 in each year group (1st/5th) who really wanted another subject but didn't get it. I may have said wait a while and see is there a space. If you are one of those, please email me with your request. In the next day or two. No promises, but I will look into it again.

ATTENTION ALL TY STUDENTS
A week long on line course , run by St. Patrick’s Mental Health services is on offer for one of our TY students. The dates are Mon-Fri , 9-13th November 2020. It is called “Walk in my shoes” and it is designed particularly for TY. ( See below) Interested students must speak with Ms.O’Connell straight away or email eoconnell@portlaoisecbs.com . Click on link below for further information…….
We are delighted your student will be joining us on our TY Programme this year. Our Transition Year (TY) Programme is a one-week mental health awareness programme run by Walk in My Shoes and facilitated by St Patrick’s Mental Health Services staff. It runs across five weeks between October and March, with 25 students on each programme.
As you are aware, with everyone’s safety in mind, we will be running the 2020/21 programme online (via MS Teams) so that the students can complete it remotely by attending a diverse timetable of virtual sessions throughout their dedicated week. Students will be emailed a TY Programme Handbook (online version) which will include a timetable for their week and links to each session they are required to attend (TY Coordinators will be copied in the emails). On the first day of the programme, at 10am they will meet myself and I will explain what it is involved and what they can expect in the week ahead. Their handbook will include exercises that they will complete during the sessions, and will include with a little background on each speaker. I’ll send this on about a week before the start date.
Time Commitment: Students must be available Monday- Friday (of their designated week) 10am-2pm and there will be 40 minutes for lunch in-between.
When: 9-13 November, 2020
Location: Whether students take part while in school or at home is the TY coordinator/parents decision. We just require students have access to Wi-Fi and a quiet surrounding for the duration of the programme.
Timetable: In terms of content, the students will be brought on a virtual tour of St Patrick’s University Hospital at the beginning of their week. The online programme then includes numerous interactive elements and activities, including the mock MDT meeting, adapted for online delivery, and new modules, such as mental health training. Students will also take part in project work to develop mental health presentations, which they will then deliver online during the programme itself and, later, in their schools when they return to class after it finishes.
Every session in the programme is designed with a virtual audience in mind to ensure students get a full, engaging and beneficial experience which builds their mental health awareness and gives them firsthand insight into the delivery of mental health care and treatment.
If you haven’t already sent it to me, I will need a student name, email and parent email address by Friday 25th September.
Please note: The programme is at full capacity so unfortunately we cannot offer alternative dates to students.
I will be in touch before the programme start date, but in the meantime if you have any questions just ask.
Thanks a million, and we look forward to working with you this academic year.
Best wishes,

Eadaoin O’Connell and I would like to welcome you back to school and wish you a happy, productive and successful year in TY during these strange Covid times. Although much is denied us for TY 2020-21 , we have planned a very busy year for our students.
We have to rethink a lot of our usual strategies but if everyone gets involved in the different opportunities and competitions which are available for TY, this year will be great. We hope work experience might happen in the new year as a block; Frances Harney will be in next Monday and Tuesday 21st and 22nd to prepare the boys for the world of work. We have deferred the Carlingford experience to April in the hope that times will change. We have already started the “Make That Course”on line programme and there will be plenty more on line courses for our students throughout the year.
Here are some dates to note of courses booked
Tuesday 6th Oct Jeff Allen will deliver The Healthy Lifestyle Programme
Tuesday 13th Oct SOAR will give a work shop on Mental Health
MON/Tues 9/10 th Nov Pat Mcneeley will give the Drive For Life course
MON/Tues 16/17th November Alex Walsh will do workshops on Personal Safety.
Mon/Tues 7/8th Dec Barrister James Fahey will conduct the Law Course and Mock Trial preparation for the inter schools competition.
All of the above are tried and tested outside speakers but of course the strict Covid guidelines and protocols will be observed .
It is important that students embrace the concept of self directed learning and be willing to get involved in new experiences. Project work is very much the norm and working on competitions and projects at home is essential to success. Recording all that happens in TY is done in the dedicated TY Journal and in the e portfolio, and should be kept up to date. A “BEST WORK PORTFOLIO” is required and should be available for scrutiny at all times. Students should their best examples of homework, tests, competitions or projects into this and should be able to “defend” their work with pride, when examined at Christmas and Summer.
Finally Ms. O’Connell and I thank all of you for your continued support of the programme.
Stay safe,
Louise Gillson

CAO IMPORTANT DATES
A reminder for the class of 2020 that if you are accepting the course which was offered to you on Friday the 11th you have until 3pm Wednesday, the 16th of September to accept your offer online.
If you have received an offer of your first choice then you will not receive any other offer. Unless you amend your existing list by adding one of the “available places” on the CAO website:
www.cao.ie/courses/vpl_courses.php
If you received an offer of one of your lower preferences courses then you may receive a higher course on your list if applicants don’t accept the place offered to them. However be aware that there is no certainty of this.
Deferring
Any student wishing to defer a place should write or email, if they haven’t already done so, to the registration office of the college making the offer.
Be aware it has been widely noted that if too many applicants seek this option, it is expected that colleges will refuse to defer places, as to approve them would have a knock on effect for the places available for next year’s applicants.
Repeating
If any student wishes to repeat their Leaving Certificate year please make contact with the school and ask to speak with Ms Murphy.
If any student wishes to speak with a member of the guidance department please email guidance@portlaoisecbs.com and one of the career guidance teachers will get back to you. If you wish to speak with one specifically just mention that in your email or email them directly.
5th year Vouchers

If you have applied for 5th year Book Vouchers, these cannot be given out until the levels of English, Irish and Maths have been finalised. This usually takes a week or two, but we are nearly there. If finalised too early, changes could be made which are an unnecessary expense. We will inform you when this is ready. Thank you for your patience.
2nd year Irish & Maths texts/ebooks

Each September of 2nd year, there are a small number of texts/ebooks which must be bought as your son moves into 2nd and 3rd year. Most of those subjects have a common level text, meaning no higher or ordinary levels. Maths and Irish are two of those who DO have a Higher and Ordinary level. This year we have sorted the levels during the first week. Those who do Book Rental have begun to receive their bundle of 2nd year books this afternoon - if they have paid the 2nd year fee of 100. If not, they can't receive the books. When you pay either online or through the office, your son will be given his books. He will also be able to return some of the books he will no longer need.
If you have an iPad, the ebooks can be purchased from Wriggle on their store and paid for online. The ebook will be installed remotely and you just have to log in. But you must know which level in these 2 subjects you are doing. I will post the details of the Wriggle store tomorrow.
PE and Uniforms

To clarify, there is no non-uniform day on Wednesdays as previously suggested. They wear their track suits and runners etc into school on the days they have PE, which may be on 2 days a week. They should also bring other shoes or runners to wear after PE as their feet will be very muddy and wet. Also, a fresh teeshirt etc as when playing outdoors they may get wet and mucky and don't want to spend the rest of the day in wet mucky clothing. Thank you.
If you are awaiting iPad delivery... please email me...

If you have ordered an iPad with textbooks and it has not arrived yet, your son obviously has no books. If he is in 2nd year and had book rental, I''ve said he could keep the book rental books until the ipad ones arrive and then return them. Anyone who got the refund would be those who are to return those rental books when the new ones and iPad are delivered.
I would appreciate if everyone who is still awaiting delivery of their new iPad and textbooks would email me today, to mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com. On the email, give your son's name, year group and the date on your invoice on which you placed the order. The reason there is a last call for order date, as it takes time to put the order in place and deliver. As the summer went on and more and more people placed the later orders, the time of 2 weeks has stretched up to 6 weeks I've been told. If I knew the extent of who hasn't received their order I could look into how I can help with the books in the interim. Please send this email today and tomorrow at the latest. Thank you.
