EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT BOOKS....

Hi all. I want to let you know what's happening about the usual end of school year things plus the prep for next year, even though we have no idea what shape that will take! But we will continue as if we do! Now that the Book Lists are published, (on the website, the App and in the 2 Portlaoise bookshops) I hope to answer your queries with the following information: 1st years -All iPad & e-book plus printed books (if you are going the iPad route) must be purchased through the Wriggle Store- please refer to the Wriggle booklet sent to all incoming 1st year students in March. The Wriggle Store is open, you need the school store code ( 02742671) your credit/debit card/ your son's option subjects when you sit down to do it. The closing date is June 3rd . It takes time to get the orders of hundreds of schools and students organised, loaded and delivered. Hence the closing date – after that a Late Fee of €50 is charged. 1st Year Book Rental - You should have sent in your Book Rental Application to the school and paid the €200 online through the App by now, or at latest by May 29th. After that, we are not accepting BR Applications. 2nd years - The subjects of Maths, English, Irish, French and SPHE always have a follow on text in 2nd year which usually lasts to 3rd year. You can see this when you study the booklist, what is different from what he has used this year. Please read on for further details depending on whether it was Book Rental, iPads or printed tests which he had in 1st year. The only different thing in 2nd year are the levels in Maths and Irish - will your son be doing Higher or Ordinary? No matter what type of books he has, (e-book, BR, owns his own) the same decisions have to be made after he’s done a few weeks at the subject level. So read on… 2nd year e-books - again there will be a Wriggle store for purchasing the French, English and SPHE e-books in June (the Irish & Maths only available once classes resume) Mr Cahillane will have this organised and put a notice on this App in the next week or two. Again, the purchased books will be loaded onto the iPad and the printed books delivered to your door. 2nd year Book Rental – Mr Mulligan will have a notice on this App in the coming week. The 2nd year fee is €100. This must be paid through the App. The subjects are listed above, these will be distributed before returning to school and the Irish & Maths will be distributed when the subject levels are decided. 3rd Years –there’s no extra fees for Book Rental. There’s no Wriggle Store. The SPHE book has a Book 3, that’s all. 5th Years-there is no Book Rental Scheme for Seniors. If you are in difficulty paying for your son’s books, you should apply to the school, forms to be sent out with the Registration Forms later this week. If approved, you will receive vouchers for 5 of your son’s textbooks which must be exchanged in All Books. 5th Years-if you want to continue with e-books on your iPad, the Wriggle Store is being setup for 5th years now and Mr Cahillane will have a notice on this App in the next week. 6th Years – All 5th year texts continue into 6th year. There is no voucher system in 6th year. For anyone who has come to see the value of an educational device such as an iPad after the months of online learning, and wishes to invest in one for their son, Wriggle are putting together a package with a device, reduced license fees for the ebooks and support. When this is ready, it will be put on the App as well. Queries about the Wriggle Store or e-books and iPads should be directed to Mr Paul Cahillane pcahillane@portlaoisecbs.com Queries about Book Rental should be directed to Mr Cyril Mulligan cyrilmulligan@portlaoisecbs.com

Principal's message to our 6th years

No doubt you opened this notification expecting details on how your LC subjects will be graded - I'm sorry, we don't have that information yet. I thought it fair to let you know, after ten days of waiting, that we, the Principals, teachers and yourselves will all learn the details at the same time and probably near to the end of this week. That is what our own management advisory body, the JMB have told us. They are involved with the Department of Education, the State Exams Commission, the two unions, (ASTI/TUI) other management bodies of the community schools, colleges, the ETBI and the Dept of Health advisors, parents and student groups, to come to the best possible solution to this situation. Believe it or not, it isn't a simple process, with all the variations, but in a pandemic scenario, every country must come to a resolution of their own. You're not alone. It is important to put this into perspective. Have the last ten weeks been a total waste? Do you feel you won't achieve what you wished to achieve? Has anyone's plans worked out as expected this year? No they haven't. Time is on your side, you are all younger than 20. There are so many ways to get to that career you're aiming towards. So many pathways, If you end up taking a slightly different pathway, you will meet different people, see different places and learn through slightly different experiences. Is that a bad thing? Not at all. For those who don't know what you want, would you know any better if you were still in school everyday, following the daily drill? Maybe you've had time to ponder more, to consider when you have more time on your hands these last 10 weeks, what you actually enjoy doing, or what you would like to do with your life, or the early part of your life. There is a saying, often quoted, that if it's for you it won't pass you. You WILL do what you were meant to do lads, because that's what happens. It may take you less time than you expected. If the journey is a bit longer, by a few years, think of the experience you will have along the way. No amount of worrying or stressing is going to change this situation. All we can hope for is that fewer get sick in the coming weeks, they find a vaccine and it's controlled. Such philosophising by me, an adult, who seems to have sorted it all, may not be what you want to hear. If you asked me what do I see when I look back on my college and work life is the totally unexpected variety of experiences I have enjoyed. The Fabric of Life - different people, places, opportunities, road blocks, new paths, cul de sacs, about-faces, moments of light and then darkness, losses, ups and downs - they are what make life and what make you interesting. They make you strong, they make you empathetic, they built your own emotional intelligence, they make you see what is real and what is false. What can you make the best of in your own life during this down time - if you and your family are well- you are not having to study for exams now- you should be able to use this time well. There will be times like this, and at times worse, in the years ahead lads. You're in the adult world now, and you do have the tools to deal with it. If you think you haven't, you are denying yourself the opportunity to grow strong, to mature, to become resilient. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to some twit on Instagram who is only showing off the most interesting and fabulous moments or instants of their lives. Are you better than last week? Last year? You don't ever have to compare yourself to anyone else. Remember that. It's all ahead of you, isn't that an exciting thought? Don't let this stop you. Thank you for reading. And thank you for being a lovely class of lads to have around the school. Maura M
