No doubt you opened this notification expecting details on how your LC subjects will be graded - I'm sorry, we don't have that information yet. I thought it fair to let you know, after ten days of waiting, that we, the Principals, teachers and yourselves will all learn the details at the same time and probably near to the end of this week. That is what our own management advisory body, the JMB have told us. They are involved with the Department of Education, the State Exams Commission, the two unions, (ASTI/TUI) other management bodies of the community schools, colleges, the ETBI and the Dept of Health advisors, parents and student groups, to come to the best possible solution to this situation. Believe it or not, it isn't a simple process, with all the variations, but in a pandemic scenario, every country must come to a resolution of their own. You're not alone.
It is important to put this into perspective. Have the last ten weeks been a total waste? Do you feel you won't achieve what you wished to achieve? Has anyone's plans worked out as expected this year? No they haven't.
Time is on your side, you are all younger than 20.
There are so many ways to get to that career you're aiming towards. So many pathways, If you end up taking a slightly different pathway, you will meet different people, see different places and learn through slightly different experiences. Is that a bad thing? Not at all.
For those who don't know what you want, would you know any better if you were still in school everyday, following the daily drill? Maybe you've had time to ponder more, to consider when you have more time on your hands these last 10 weeks, what you actually enjoy doing, or what you would like to do with your life, or the early part of your life.
There is a saying, often quoted, that if it's for you it won't pass you. You WILL do what you were meant to do lads, because that's what happens. It may take you less time than you expected. If the journey is a bit longer, by a few years, think of the experience you will have along the way. No amount of worrying or stressing is going to change this situation. All we can hope for is that fewer get sick in the coming weeks, they find a vaccine and it's controlled.
Such philosophising by me, an adult, who seems to have sorted it all, may not be what you want to hear. If you asked me what do I see when I look back on my college and work life is the totally unexpected variety of experiences I have enjoyed. The Fabric of Life - different people, places, opportunities, road blocks, new paths, cul de sacs, about-faces, moments of light and then darkness, losses, ups and downs - they are what make life and what make you interesting. They make you strong, they make you empathetic, they built your own emotional intelligence, they make you see what is real and what is false.
What can you make the best of in your own life during this down time - if you and your family are well- you are not having to study for exams now- you should be able to use this time well. There will be times like this, and at times worse, in the years ahead lads. You're in the adult world now, and you do have the tools to deal with it. If you think you haven't, you are denying yourself the opportunity to grow strong, to mature, to become resilient. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to some twit on Instagram who is only showing off the most interesting and fabulous moments or instants of their lives. Are you better than last week? Last year? You don't ever have to compare yourself to anyone else. Remember that. It's all ahead of you, isn't that an exciting thought? Don't let this stop you. Thank you for reading. And thank you for being a lovely class of lads to have around the school. Maura M
