We are an Office 365 school - that means our emails and our communication platform of choice is the Office Suite of Apps - Word, Powerpoint, Excel, which are the most popular and most used by students and families in general. As the school purchase an open license each year, each student in the school has an @portlaoisecbs.com email account - which enables him to download the Office Suite onto up to 5 laptops, PC's, etc in your home/family.
Why does your son need this? If your son needs to open many documents used by his teacher to send notes, tc, he needs Word on the device he is using to open it. The same for him to create a Powerpoint Presentation - he needs the Powerpoint App in order to create it for his Classroom Based Assessment - (CBA). We as a school have purchased the license in order to support our students be up to date with the use of IT and be prepared for 3rd level, when that day comes.
If he is in TY, he should be practicing his Microsoft Office Specialist course - Word, Powerpoint and Excel - for the exams he will be sitting throughout the year and the Certification he will receive at the end of TY. This is an important life skill for all students to have for any job.
Please take a few minutes to click into the pdf below read the 1 page document. If you have ever purchased the Microsoft Word Suite in PC World or Curry's you know it costs at least €120 to buy download on just 1 device! It will be useful if you have an older student in the house heading off to college soon with a new laptop - download Microsoft Office Suite it onto it for free by following these instructions. Good luck!

The National Art Gallery run an exciting work-experience programme for Transition Year students. In this week-long programme you will go behind the scenes at the Gallery and learn about the work of different departments including Education, Conservation, Curatorial and Visitor Experience. Working as a team you will develop a Live Project to create an event for young people that will run at the Gallery.
The placement will suit students who are interested in art and may be considering studying it for Leaving Cert. You must be willing to work with students from other schools and be comfortable in a team environment. Most importantly, we’re looking for students who want to learn something from their week at the Gallery and benefit from a new experience.
