Parents Council AGM Wed 25th September 7 pm

The Annual General Meeting of St Mary's CBS Parents Council will be held on Wednesday 25th September at 7 pm. All parents are encouraged to attend, not just on this night, but on some or most of the following 6 monthly meetings. In recent years our Parent Council membership has dwindled to a worrying low number of attendees. Parent Voice is there for parents to exercise. When a new school policy, DES initiative, strategy or school subject is being introduced, we genuinely want parents to attend the monthly meetings, to ask questions, to voice their opinions, to take this information away with them and support their own sons when it involves them. Our education system has undergone revolutionary change in the last 8-10 years. We have brought in the new Junior Cycle in all subjects, a new Additional Educational Needs Allocation Model, new legislation (Child Protection/GDPR/Admissions Bill to name but a few), new CAO points scheme, and the list goes on. Our own school is one of 41 schools across Ireland which were selected to be part of the Senior Cycle Review - ie. for the first time ever, parents/teachers/students were asked for their opinions on what the Leaving Cert of the future should be like. This was ground breaking. Everyone has an opinion about the Leaving Certificate - even if you didn't remain in school to sit it, you still have an opinion about its relevance to employment, to young people's lives, to preparation for the real world. Meetings begin at 7 pm. The AGM will include an address by myself summarising the life of St Mary's CBS during the 2018-19 school year and what we have planned for the coming 2019- 20 school year. Then the inevitable election of officers and nominees for the new Board of Management which will begin its 3 year cycle on October 15th. Nobody will be forced to take up any role. I genuinely ask you to become involved, to become informed, to use your voice. I completely understand the reluctance of us all to go home after a day's work, to want to get comfortable, to catch up on jobs around the home, to put the feet up etc. Believe me I do. But, I am, as Principal of your son's school, asking you to come to, at most, 7 meetings in the next 12 months, to learn about our policies, our vision, our direction, etc. If you had no voice you would wish for it. You would demand it. I look forward to meeting you next Wednesday evening. You will be home by 8.30pm. Thank you for taking the time to read this! Maura Murphy

Well done to our U19 basketballers on a superb win against St. Andrews. The game was end to end and nothing could separate the sides at half time. St. Andrews went on a huge run to go up 16pts but a switch up to a full court press brought the CBS lads back into the game. The whole team were superb and aided by a great crowd, they pushed over the line on a score line of 70-63. Scores came from: CBS J. Phelan 45 R. O’Connell 15 D. Phelan 10 St. Andrews M. Mc Grath 18 S. Mitiadis 16 O.
