Thank you for your patience

During the past week, you no doubt became aware that we were having problems with the VSware timetable . It has been a very difficult week for all and we wish to firstly thank you for your patience. The timetable has now been sorted since yesterday, The printed timetables which students received earlier in the week have probably changed somewhat. Certainly the room numbers which were added since yesterday evening are new. Over the weekend, we are asking parents and students to log into their VSware account, check their timetable and have your son write down his classrooms in his journal so he knows exactly where he is going on Monday morning. Some rooms have still to be added but for the most part all teachers have a specified room for each class period. Learning support and science will be added on Monday. All science classes are on the science corridor, so it would never take long to find the teacher anyway. Again, we apologise for the confusing start some pupils experienced. It was through no fault of our own, it was a fault in the software. However, it is our responsibility to make your son's start of year experience as smooth as possible. If there are any changes which need to be made with subject options, they are easily made in the coming week with a note from the parent/guardian. Have a lovely weekend. MM

That time of year has rolled around once again and Study Skills are on the Agenda. Mr Michael Bond, who has presented these workshops to our 3rd and 6th years over the last few years will be presenting to those year groups starting on Tuesday 25th September up to Friday 28th September. Workshops will be 2 hours and cost the students €10 each. We would ask all parents / guardians to please submit this payment in an envelope with your son's name and Study Skills written on the outside. They should leave this into the school office. Due to the very positive feedback from all all students each year, We feel this is a very worthwhile few hours and money well spent. He also returns to meet with the 6th years after their Mock exams to answer their questions and give them further advice.
NUMERACY IN ST. MARYS CBS

The school has engaged in the “School Self Evaluation” process to assess the whole area of numeracy in St. Mary’s. This involved gathering data from a variety of sources including surveys of teachers, students and parents, as well as exam results and numeracy tests. Our evaluation revealed a great deal of positives such as a supportive staff and management, appropriate testing of numeracy skills throughout the junior cycle, targeted support of students who struggle with numeracy and timetabling classes to allow for smaller maths class groups. Over the next 2 years the school aims to improve numeracy skills among students by focusing on: ➢ Increasing the number of students who like numeracy. ➢ Increasing the number of students who recognise the importance of numeracy to all careers after school. ➢ Increasing the number of teachers who make students aware of the numeracy skills involved in their subject. The numeracy committee has put in place a plan of action to work towards these targets. Surveys will take place over the next 2 years to assess the extent to which these targets have been achieved. Currently the school has started a new Self Evaluation process with the focus this time on engaging students “purposefully in meaningful learning activities”.

First Years had an early start today!

All our new First Years took part in their Induction Day this morning. Their Meitheal Leaders spent the morning showing them around the school, giving them opportunities to get to know one another, play games, and learn that it's not that big a place after all - that they'll be OK next week. Many thanks to the Meitheal leaders who spent a week during June training for this day and the next year in their new role as mentors and big brothers to the new lads. Many thanks also to Ms D Carroll who is their Coordinator and met with them several times this week to organise today's activities. Those who received their iPads yesterday stayed for an additional 2 hours. They put their timetables on their iPads, and did anorientation by using the iPads to map out their timetables for a typical Monday. So they have photos of their Classroom numbers, their texts and these are linked to their timetabled subjects. A good start to their school year. All first years benefit from this Induction Day. It takes that bewildered look off their faces and helps in settling down next week. The next hurdle now is the combination locks, but the Meitheal lads will be there to help them. Enjoy your weekends.
Well done and the best of luck to our 2018 Leaving Cert Class!

On Wednesday morning, the Leaving Certificate students once again did us proud. Some achieved very high points such as Luan Fletcher Calt with 625 points and Conor Devoy with 590 points. some achieved their potential in the 500's - Ronan Corr, Sean Finlay, Conor McKenna,David Nolan and Luke Smullen. Almost 30 achieved in the 400's - too many to mention. Most lads now nervously await news their CAO applications next Monday morning. Many have plans made for other career paths. The main point to remember is it is the START of their careers, no matter how well or not that each student does on their Leaving Certificate. There are so many pathways and choices now for young people to follow. Many will travel, which is an education in itself. All the students who left St Mary's CBS Portlaoise have been part of a strong school community, who have been supported and nourished by the care around them. The bigger world may not always be so kind to them, but hopefully they have many of the personal and emotional tools needed to know how to take care of themselves and others, to make informed decisions and to get up and keep going when the hard knocks inevitably come. And it is very important to remember that - keeping going is so important. This class have been a lovely bunch of lads and they gave great example in their final 2-3 years to the younger students - they will be missed. Take care.
