The staff and teachers wish all our Junior and Leaving Certificate students the best of luck in their exams beginning on Wed. Stay calm, read the questions twice, stay to the last minute and keep writing- it has to be marked, and don’t get involved in conversations afterwards about what other people wrote, making you feel you may have been wrong. At that point it’s over, move on positively to the next exam. Don’t look back. You will, I promise you, do better than you think if you keep going and remain in for the full time. After that lads, enjoy your summer, stay safe, and last of all be good! MM

On Thursday May 17th, Transition Year students from St. Mary's CBS, along with their coordinator Ms. O'Connell celebrated the end of a busy and exciting year at the annual awards ceremony. There was a fantastic turn out of parents and enthusiastic students eager to enjoy the music, the award presentations and the niceties provided by Miss Martina Murphy and her team of chefs. Mr. Thompson , deputy principal gave the opening address , which set the tone of celebration and recognition of the many students who contributed to the programme in so many positive ways. The overall Student of the Year went to Thomas Dunne whose many acolades include the scripting and directing of an award winning play. The Student Leadership award deservedly went to Dylan Kerry who produced along with Anton Ozolins a magnificent TY Yearbook and stage managed the TY Entertainment night. The most Improved award went to Aaron Lynott. Almost all students received their Bronze Gaisce medals. Ms. O'Connell spoke of the success of the five short courses which included an introduction to Chinese Language and culture, a course given by a teacher from the Confucius Institute in UCD, most definitely a first for our school. The vivacious Ms. Mary Heaney representing the Portlaoise Toastmasters and The Rotary Club, gave a lovely speech before presenting Conor McEvoy Duff with First prize in the Rotary Club Young Writers competition. She kindly complimented our boys on the impressive number of entries and was encouraging of their creative skills . There were as usual a huge number of awards given out along with the many certificates for the various courses, including the Mock Trial, the Healthy Lifestyle programme and the Driver Ed course, another first for us here in St. Mary,s. Ms. Gillson thanked the loyal employers who are so generous with their time in mentoring our students every Wednesday . We were treated to some lively music by Sean Lewis ,Cian MacGearailt and Alain Carroll who performed at the National Concert Hall the previous week. MS. Quinlan's ukelele group brought the evening to an end. Finally a big thank you goes to our coordinator Eadaoin O'Connell who continues to improve what has always been a very dynamic and successful programme.
