RE: Testing of Second Year Students Week Commencing 23rd April 2018
Dear Parent/Guardian,
As part of the assessment policy of St Mary’s CBS, all pupils are required to complete a Group Reading Test and a Maths test during first and second year. I am writing to inform you that these tests will start on Monday 23rd April 2018. Each group will be taken down to the language lab and the tests will be performed on the computer. The students will complete the Digital test of the Group Reading Test and the Progress Test in Maths.
The Group Reading Test establishes a reading age for each pupil. It enables the assessment of reading and comprehension in a single test, helping to identify, for instance, competent readers with weak comprehension skills who would benefit from a learning support and/or an individual assessment. The assessment also measures how a pupil is performing in relation to their peers at national level.
The Progress Test in Maths tests a pupil’s mathematical skills and concepts, and has become established as the standardized Maths assessment of choice in many schools. The Group Test highlights strengths and weaknesses helping teachers and SENCO’s to address areas of concern and build upon what pupils already know, in order to increase their understanding.
Tests such as these inform teachers of the ability of their pupils and help them in their class planning. This will also help the SEN Department identify those students who could get extra support in literacy and numeracy.
Unless you have an issue with your son taking part in these assessments, there is no need to reply to this letter. If you have any queries, please ring the school office and ask for myself or Ms. Murphy.
Yours sincerely
Ms. Kenny

A great evening was had at our third Masterchef CBS competition as part of Mental Health week.
Ms Murphy and Ms Fahy had a hard time deciding the winners but eventually awarded Murdo Anton first place for his red pepper pasta with roast vegetables and tofu. Nathan Harrison came in second place with his very tasty Indian chicken curry and basmati rice. Special mention to Aymane Raji for his delicious pan fried chicken served on crispy lettuce and homemade salsa.
Thank you to Mr. McEvoy who also competed but lost out on a prize due to stiff competition!
Great evening had by all and a big thank you to our wonderful judges Ms Murphy and Ms Fahy.
5th year subject forms

Reminder- these forms MUST be returned by Friday. Those who don’t are putting themselves outside the subjects they prefer as subjects are being put into their blocks in the coming days. If it seems to us that there are not enough interested in a subject to run an extra class we won’t. And if several do want it but are late, there is nothing else that can be done. They shall have to take their less favorite subjects. The timetabling process begins with this. Thank you.
