Reading and Maths testing for 1st Year students

RE: Testing of First Year Students Week Commencing 16thApril 2018 Dear Parent/Guardian, As part of the assessment policy of St Mary’s CBS, all pupils are required to complete a Group Reading Test and a Maths test during first and second year. I am writing to inform you that these tests will start on Monday 16th April 2018. Each group will be taken down to the language lab and the tests will be performed on the computer. The students will complete the Digital test of the Group Reading Test and the Progress Test in Maths. The Group Reading Test establishes a reading age for each pupil. It enables the assessment of reading and comprehension in a single test, helping to identify, for instance, competent readers with weak comprehension skills who would benefit from a learning support and/or an individual assessment. The assessment also measures how a pupil is performing in relation to their peers at national level. The Progress test in Maths tests a pupil’s mathematical skills and concepts, and has become established as the standardized Maths assessment of choice in many schools. The group test highlights strengths and weaknesses helping teachers and SENCO’s to address areas of concern and build upon what pupils already know, in order to increase their understanding. Tests such as these inform teachers of the ability of their pupils and help them in their class planning. This will also help the SEN Department identify those students who could get extra support in literacy and numeracy. Unless you have an issue with your son taking part in these assessments, there is no need to reply to this letter. If you have any queries, please ring the school office and ask for myself or Ms. Murphy. Yours faithfully, Anita Kenny SEN Coordinator

Jerry Lodge R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Jerry Lodge. Jerry has been a long time member of St Mary's CBS Board of Management, back to the Tower Hill era. Many teachers will remember his kindness and interest during their interviews, as he sat on many an interview panel. Jerry's interests in our school were far-reaching. In recent years he enlisted the students in our Green Schools Committee to grow and plant bulbs for his other great passion - Portlaoise Tidy Towns. While sitting on the Board, Jerry was the voice of compassion. He often asked the question, are we acting in the way Edmund Rice would have wanted - offering support and kindness, a second chance, to students? Jerry also knew how to bring a smile to everyone's face at the start of a meeting, asking was the cuppa tea on the way? Or he'd offer to make it himself. He was a true gentleman. Jerry could bring a smile, at just the right moment, by passing a well placed comment or question - and we will have fond memories of those times. Jerry was a gentleman and a lovely character who had a great interest in the youth, as he was so young at heart himself. Anything that he did, he committed himself fully to it. As we know. Jerry you will be missed at our Board meetings. On behalf of the entire school community I wish to extend our sympathies to his wife Patricia and sons Damian and Pauric. Ar dheis De ar a anam.
