Today our TY and 5th Year League Team played their 3rd game of the league against Clongowes Wood at home in Tougher Portlaoise RFC. The CBS boys started very well with some big carries from Cormac Deegan Aaron Kingston and Captain Cian Butler to name a few. The CBS boys opened the scoring with some great carries and back plays which would see Ciaran O Brien McCormack in for his first try of the day, converted by Dan Thornton to give our boys a 7 nil lead. Straight from the kick off the brothers came again with even more carries over the gain line and big tackles flying in from Jayden Kelly and Theo Adams especially, to keep pushing Clongowes back. Clongowes eventually crumbled under all the CBS pressure to let Charlie Dwyer crash over for our second try of the match and Thornton split the posts again to increase the lead to 14. There was more to come before the halftime whistle though. With the CBS backs pulling off some great moves and carries to keep the pressure on Clongowes in their own half and yet again they couldn't handle the strength of the CBS pack nor the speed of our backs. All our hard work eventually paid off  when Ciaran crossed the whitewash for his second of the game and with a narrowly missed conversion our boys went into the break 19 nil ahead.

The game was far from over and Clongowes wood rallied early in the second half to score their first try of the day with a conversion following to collect all 7 points. The hard work of the first half was taking its toll on the CBS lads who were tyring, straight from the kick-off again Clongowes broke the line and after a couple of phases managed to score their second try and convert it to drag themselves back into the game 19-14 in favour of the brothers. It was far from over though as our boys bounced back with big hits straight from the kickoff with Eoin McGowen and Patrick O'Callaghan haring down after the winger putting on great pressure. As the game got rowdy, the CBS showed great composure and coolness and it showed after a perfect chip over the top from Dan Thornton bounced right into the super sub Jack Condon-Egan's hands, still with work to do though Jack stepped the last man and tapped the ball down under the posts for kicker Dan Thornton to get his hattrick of conversions and almost seal the game for Portlaoise. The last 10 minutes showed how strong this team was mentally and physically breaking down every Clongowes phase with heavy hits and great rucking pushing them back every time they got the ball. great work shown from Cormac Deegan and Aaron Kingston.  As the referee blew his whistle for full time the CBS ran out 26-14 winners vs Clongowes and play Roscrea on Wednesday the 21st of February. MOTM had to go to the captain Cian Butler with great carries, tackles and leadership shown throughout the match.

Unfortunately, there were no pictures taken.

Dear parent/ guardian,

As part of the Social, Personal & Health education (S.P.H.E) syllabus, we are required to cover the area of Relationships and Sexuality (R.S.E).

The teaching of this topic will commence after midterm.

R.S.E plays a critical role in supporting and preparing young people for the transition from adolescence to adulthood.

We encourage parents to respond and build on the learning that takes place in the classroom, through conversations at home.

Should you have any queries or concerns, we will be happy to address these.

Regards,

School Principal

Carlow was the venue of the South Leinster Schools Cross Country on Wednesday 31 st January. Conditions were ideal for racing ️ which was backed up with brilliant results from the boys . Highlight of the day goes to David Wajrack who bagged himself 3 rd place in the Inter Boys. This is David's first year in the u-17 race. David ran a courageous race staying in the leading pack of 10 for the first km and hanging on when there was a break, fighting all the way across the line to claim a spot for Leinsters next week  Well done and best of luck next week David!

A very impressive team performance from our Minor Boys also sees them progress to Leinsters Champs. The boys packed in well together and finished a strong 3 rd team. This is a great achievement as there were over 200 athletes in the field and we haven't had team qualifications in a few years.

Well done to all who competed on the day! Next up is Pheonix Park to take on the rest of Leinster! Training will be on Friday this week

U16 Basketball All-Ireland Semi Final Vs 'The Bish', Galway

St Mary’s CBS got stuck into this game from the very beginning.

Inside scoring coming from Mark Madu and Justice Iheme and meant the CBS were up early in this game. The Bish struggled to contain Jayden Umeh and Desmond Ogedegbe. The CBS zone proved too hard to infiltrate as The Bish struggled to score inside the key. Fantastic footwork along with aggressive driving led to impressive finished from Desmond who led the first quarter in scoring.

The score was painsktakingly close and there was all to play for going into the second quarter with the scoreboard 11-10 to our side. Scott Davis checked into the game early in the second quarter and immediately made an impact with outlet passes leading into fast break scores. The Bish were visibly more comfortable after the first as they began to score from beyond the arc and around the midrange area. However, pick and rolls between Jayden and Madu exploited the gaps in The Bish defence as the second quarter progressed. Despite continued scores from the CBS lads The Bish took and kept a five-point lead going into the third quarter.

Jim Hanamy and Jayden continued to expose flaws in The Bish’s man defence as quick zip passes led to wide open shots early in the third quarter. The two teams battled back and forth in this quarter, trading basket after basket as tensions began to run high. Baskets being scored by an unstoppable Desmond one more who was coming off a game winner only a mere hour prior. Nevertheless, The Bish began to adapt to the fast-paced offence as they slowed the game down to their own pace. The change of pace proved as challenging to the lads as The Bish kept the lead going into the fourth despite extremely aggressive offensive from the lads.

Vicious rebounding from Mark Delaney and Madu proved to be affective, and the intensity rose as the game progressed into the fourth and final quarter. Jayden proceeded to rack up assists as he dimed passes to Desmond and Scott. The atmosphere in the arena was ecstatic and with time winding down both teams began to play physical defence. The Bish began to collapse in on the key and quickly recovering to guard open shooters as the CBS struggled during a two-minute scoring drought. Jayden ran the offence down with 2:34 remaining and after a small rotation by coach Mr. Duignan the team recovered after another impressive score by Desmond. With 1:29 left Ben Quigley came up huge for CBS by with a three pointer from the left wing cutting it to a one-point deficit. After two crucial possessions the lads managed to get a stop and the ball back with 4.3 seconds left on the clock. Duignan called a timeout and wrote a play for a Jayden to receive the ball off of a screen. Jayden caught the ball and came off a quick ball screen from Mark Madu who dove to the basket. Jayden saw the open man under the basket and swung it to Mark, who was unfortunately blocked on his game winning layup attempt. Final score - 41-39.

An unfortunate loss for St. Mary’s CBS despite a huge effort from everyone involved.  A fantastic achievement by our lads demonstrating resilience to the very end. The team received bronze All-Ireland medals for their tremendous efforts. We are all so proud of you.

A special thank you to Fionn Stack for the match report.
