175 Years of St. Mary ’s CBS

We had a fantastic day of celebrations on Friday where our current students visited the photo exhibition of St. Mary’s CBS through the years in the GPA. Many thanks to Mr. White on his fabulous displays. 

The students also got to hear from past pupils who spoke so fondly of their time here, while others encouraged resilience and positivity in our pupils.

There was such an air of pride among our past pupils who so kindly visited on Friday and as we celebrated, we encouraged our current students to recognise the importance of belonging to our school community in Portlaoise.  We will continue to post more photos throughout the week but here is a snapshot of the day.

The 1st year Rugby team headed to Portlaoise Rugby Club last week to play in the 1st year Rugby blitz. We had a large squad of 26 players with a nice mix of experienced players and those new to the game. There were 6 teams in total in the blitz meaning that we would have 5 games at least. We played games against Ard Scoil Athy, PBS Newbridge, Naas CC, Confey College and St Kevin’s Dunlavin with all our panel getting involved. There were some great performances from the CBS boys with Darragh Lalor, Finn D’Arcy Jack Dowling, Ciaran Dunne, Jim Hanamy, Owen Dent and James Doody all putting in fantastic displays not to mention all the other boys who played out of their skin. Training will continue every Friday after school, new players always welcome. Well done all! 

Last week TY’s had a tour of the farm and gardens at Airfield Estate Dundrum. Here they focus on how to produce food in their organic vegetable garden using regenerative farming methods.

Students also got to see the milking in the morning and learned about  the pasteurising process which their Jersey milk goes through before it is sent to their restaurant. They also got to do a butter making activity. 

Other topics covered were seasonality, sustainability, composting and the problem of food waste. Thanks to Ms Dunleavy & Ms Egan for organising the very enjoyable trip.
