Parent and Guardian Update: Semester 2: Week 2: Friday 1 December 2023

Dear parents and guardians,

I was at the ACCS (Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools) Conference in Cavan from yesterday afternoon until today.  Last night the retiring principals and deputy principals from community and comprehensive schools were thanked for their years of service to education.  I was very happy to attend the dinner with Anthony and Jackie Leavy.  It was a lovely evening.
We had a talk from Lord Putnam, the famous film-maker and member of the House of Lords in the Education Dept talking about the teacher of tomorrow, in relation to AI.
I also attended a session with Webwise and explored lots of the resources they use in relation to keeping students safe online. Maggie McGrory, our Digital LEarning Coordinator and our digital team have been tapping into them for a while so see their latest offerings to support schools.
This morning we looked at current issues impacting on schools (teacher supply, book grants for schools etc...) and we have a talk from Jacinta Kitt about reflective leadership.

School Closed  Monday
We will be closed on Monday 4th December 2023, as one of the two closure days due as a result of returning to school early in August.

Basketball
A devastating loss was had by Darragh Lowry the U10 boys yesterday in Carrickmacross when they went down by 3 points only.  A hard day for them but a great achievement to get to the finals.  There will be another day.

Shannon Watsun's U16 girls basketballers had a win but the U19's weren't so lucky on the day.

Meath Student Enterprise Challenge
Dean O'Meara, Heidi Donohoe Moloney and Nick Keogh  won 1st place Most Sustainable Business Category at the Enterprise Awards on Wednesday winning €250 for school and €250 for students. They will feature in Meath Chronicle next week.  Well done to the students and Maggie McGrory.

Gaisce Awards
A ceremony was held in the school last night to celebrate the achievement of our students in being awarded Gaisce Medals.  Well done to Emma Mooney and the other teachers involved in Gaisce and in organising the evening.

Hurling
Senior boys had a big win this week in the Senior Hurling 6/26 to Dunshaughlin CC 3 /8. That leaves the lads top of their group with a win and a draw in the last two outings. The senior panel could now advance straight to a North Leinster final. A draw will take place in Aras Laighean to determine pairings. One Group Winner to be drawn to get a bye straight to the final. Remaining two Group Winners will play a semifinal. So fingers crossed for Anthony and the boys.

Junior Girls Football
Aisling's girl lost out to Granard in a home game this week.  Hard luck!

Athena Tracker
We have recently signed up for the Athens Tracker, a system which combines the results of psychometric tests (CAT 4) and collates all of the students' exam results throughout their time with us.  It allows target setting and makes clear to teachers whether students are either underperforming or excelling.  This is information that will be shared with parents at Parent Teacher Meetings.

Behaviour Team
We have had three  meetings of teachers and SNAs to review our behaviour code  and will be meeting a focus group of students this coming week to harness their voice on our progress to date.  We will also be inviting a group of parents and guardians to do the same when we have some drafts to show you.

Ethos Team
We will be having our first teacher/SNA Ethos meeting next week to revisit our missions statement and core values.  We will also be inviting students and parents and guardians to get involved in this consultation in the coming weeks/months.

Christmas
There are an amazing array of outreach initiatives ongoing to support others at Christmas, these are so important for our students to learn to give something back to our community when we can.
Grace Quinn is running the Jackets/coats for homeless, Roger Maxwell the food drive for Trim Resource Centre, Deirdre Halligan the goodies box for the elderly, Louise O'Hare will be doing a Christmas Jumper Day with her 6th Year RE class for charity.  Thanks to all of our volunteers and thanks to you all for supporting us through your children.
All tutor groups have been invited to decorate the classroom doors with Christmas fare over the next few weeks with prizes for the most ingenious ideas.

Multi-cultural Day
Plans are afoot for a fabulous event celebrating our 25 nationalities and all students will be encouraged to represent their countries in the PE Hall showcasing their flag, customs and food on Thursday Dec 14th.  More to follow on this.

Musical
Tickets are selling quickly, so buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Have a lovely weekend!

Regards,
Clare
