Galway Community College v St. Raphael’s College Basketball Darby
Report By:Oisin Dolan, Ciaran Harris and Eoin Prendergast
It was all basketball down at the Temperance Hall today, 29th September 2016.
St. Raphael’s College were taking on Galway Community College in two separate high intensity games. The Cadet and Senior teams were both in action today. Playing against tough opposition, both teams fell short at the final hurdle.
First team up was the U16 Team. The team starting the first quarter was Evan Cox (6), Mark Regan (7), Daniel O’Malley (12), Robert Connaire (5), Josh De Swart (8), with John Maughan, Joe Jackson, Cathal Bryan, Cian Gallagher, , Conor O’Neill and Dylan Moore acting substitutes.
The boys were off to a good start, but inaccuracy in their shots meant they failed to convert this on the scoreboard. This was a facet of the game that let them down the most. Their defending was mostly on par, with Evan and Robert doing an excellent job. Robert Connaire opening the scoring for St Raphael’s, and with baskets from Daniel O’Malley and Cathal Bryan, they were still only two points behind after a mediocre first quarter. However they improved immensely in the following quarter, with some excellent play from Cathal Bryan and Cian Gallagher. Ryan Keleghan and Robert Connaire had two baskets each in the second quarter and Raphael’s were the more comfortable at the half way mark. However the GCC no. 4 ‘Jose’ was unstoppable going to the basket at times and at the end of the 3rd, he had 22 out of 24 of Galway Community College scores. Evan Cox had an excellent 3rd quarter too, scoring 10 points within the 8 min quarter.
The fourth quarter was tension packed with GCC’s Jose making four ‘3 pointers’ at crucial times in the final quarter, Raphael’s found themselves chasing the game by 2 points in the dying seconds, despite excellent scores from Ryan, Evan and Mark.
As the final whistle approached the bridge of two points remained and all attempts of drawing level failed, with Raphael’s missing several shots in the last minute including a buzzer shot.
Final Score:
St Raphaels College 39
Galway Community College 41
Top scorers:
Evan Cox 11 points
Cathal Bryan 8 points
Robert Connaire 8 points

Our Leaving Certificate group enjoyed a 2 day, overnight retreat in the beautiful and tranquil surroundings of Esker on the 13th and 14th September. The retreat offered our students the opportunity not only to bond and learn more about each other but also to learn more about themselves, helping them to become independent and to deal with the stress of both daily and school life.
