Parents Association Talk. All Welcome

The Parents Association have arranged a talk from renowned psychologist, Fergus Heffernan on September 19th next at the school. All are welcome to what will be a very interesting and informative presentation. The following is a summary of his presentation. Understanding the Emotional Well Being of Teenagers and Children and the Family The evening is a thought provoking presentation which looks at why our teenagers and our children no not have appeared to have developed resilience. Research now show us that 1 in 5 second level students in Ireland now present with self-harm and high anxiety disorders, and this is now beginning to manifest in the primary school setting. Recent surveys are now telling us that a lot of young children are not learning empathy as they are not learning relationship skills particularly within the home, due to the fact that they are only learning virtual relationships through screens. The recent WHO report on suicide tells us that we now have the third highest rate of suicide in Europe. The lack of resilience that is presenting in our teenagers who just don’t appear to cope with life very well, has often to do with the fact that they are not learning these skills as children. This presentation is particularly suited to people who play a key role in supporting the emotional well-being of teenagers, and young children, and also looks at how people can look after themselves in these challenging roles. Dr Heffernan employs a wonderfully honest, heartfelt, practical and oftentimes humorous approach to the subject of Mental Health and Family Issues. He provides his listeners with plenty of material for ongoing reflection. Dr Heffernan holds a Primary Degree in Clinical Psychology, a Masters in Family Therapy, and a PhD in Neuro Psychology. He is a visiting Professor at many Universities in the USA including Columbia University New York where he completes a residency every year. He has lived and worked in the most distressed areas of the world in delivering programmes in Critical Incident De Briefing to soldiers in highly volatile battleground situations, and resilience programmes in areas of the world devastated by Natural Disasters.

The money was raised through several fund-raising initiatives from the Parents' Association, most recently, their very successful church-gate collection. Many thanks to everyone involved.
