We had a Department of Education Covid-19 Inspection this morning. Our Inspector was very impressed with our high level of compliance across all areas of her checklist. The lads themselves were excellent, They need to maintain their adherence to sanitising, social distancing and correct mask wearing - it has certainly paid off as we have not had any in school transmission of Covid-19 since we re-opened last September. The official report will be sent out in due course. Thank you to all concerned.

If your son is currently in 6th class in primary school and you wish him to attend our Open Night, it will now be held over two evenings, with two time slots, during which you will be taken in small groups by our student / teacher Tour Leaders around our school. Although the traditional Open Evening seemed possible a few weeks ago, we have modified the plan once Covid numbers began to rise. We want to assure everyone attending, that all social distancing, mask wearing, sanitising and other Covid compliant practices will be strictly adhered to.
Please click on this link to book your Open Night Tour with us on either Wednesday November 10th or Thursday November 11th at either 6pm or 7.15pm. Tours will begin on the time specified so we ask you to please attend 10 minutes earlier for organisation purposes. The Tour will take 60 minutes approximately, allowing time for questions, etc.
This link is also available on the Home Page of our website. Our other social media platforms (Facebook / Twitter / Instagram) will also provide this link from Monday 1st November. We are looking forward to welcoming all interested 6th class students and their parents/guardians.

Stop the Bully

Yesterday, Thurs 9th Sept, all first year classes attended a two hour workshop by Pat Forde, of 'Stop the Bully.ie'. Here is some background information on Pat Forde and 'Stop the Bully' workshops are about.
These workshops are a very positive experience and a great way to learn many new skills and techniques that will help deal with potential bullying scenarios, learn lots of new friendship-making skills as well as learning how to deal with other related social issues. It is also for students just starting secondary school or already experiencing some issues in school although attendees don’t necessarily have to be experiencing current issues to benefit.
Stop the Bully empowers people of all ages with the tools to effectively deal with bullying. As a school, we wanted a program to educate, and empower our first year students at the start of their secondary school experience.
Stop the Bully was established by one of Ireland’s leading anti-bullying experts Pat Forde. Forde is a leading figure in the on-going anti-bullying debate in Ireland and has featured on RTE’s award-winning television series Bullyproof with clinical psychologist David Coleman and is a regular contributor to media debates on the subject.
Pat has worked with bullying targets, families and schools all over Ireland empowering them with the skills and knowledge to effectively deal with bullying situations and also improve confidence, assertiveness, and self-esteem. Pat has considerable experience in this area and has helped to improve the quality of life for many bullying targets, school students and families all over Ireland.
Bullying in Ireland has become a serious concern and it is a primary goal of Stop the Bully to offer positive intervention to drive positive change. Forde can help with his training, knowledge, and experience working on the subject and many years of experience working with young people and families.
Pat Forde has vastly improved the quality of life for many bullying targets and families all over Ireland. This has also extended to many schools nationwide which have worked very successfully with Pat to empower students, parents, and staff to effectively deal with bullying.
We hope that your son learned some skills to cope with bullying from yesterday's workshop. The best thing you can do it to have a chat with him about what was discussed, have they learned anything about what to do themselves, how have they handled it in the past, what is the school policy in St Mary's CBS? Please advise them to come to any teacher, Mr Thompson, Mr Mulligan or myself if they are being intimidated, threatened, if they are afraid in school, or they see it taking place among their peers.
Please remember that bullying is not a one off incident - it is ongoing and persistant behaviour. But when it is allowed to continue over time - something usually blows. Sometimes this means that the person being bullied is the person who lands the first punch, understandable, but it changes the scenario. Also, please be aware that our Anti-Bullying Policy can be found on this School App, and our website: portlaoisecbs.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Anti-Bullying-Policy-May2021.pdf
Thank you MM
When driving into the school grounds

Most parents drive into our school campus on a daily basis. There are a few rules of traffic management which I want to bring to everyone's attention at the start of the year:
1. The Staff Carpark is not for parents to take a short cut. Do not turn left into the Staff Carpark, drop your sons/daughters off in the middle of that drive through area, and then get out quickly. It is dangerous, it slows traffic, and is dangerous - car doors pop open when the cars stop, often suddenly, in an area where people are reversing, driving past stopped cars, reversing into spaces, etc. The students don't look around them, they just walk, often with earphones, without looking either way. Most workplaces have a barrier to prevent everyone else out. We don't have thisone, but that doesn't make it a free carpark.
2. Worse again, are those parents who come in early from 3pm, park or block staff cars who wish to leave at 4pm and they can't. Some parents get argumentative and hold their ground, this is not acceptable.
3. Sodexo, our Facility Managers, ask us to remind you that the left hand side lane is ONLY FOR BUSES. The lane to the right of that is to be KEPT CLEAR - FOR CARS DRIVING THROUGH. The 2 right hand side lanes may be parked in, and then the cars move on. The bus drivers will block you in, they are quite angry when parents block their regular spaces.
There is not enough parking for staff in the staff car park. Parking for us, who remain here all day, is difficult enough. Please respect our traffic management requests. Everyone is in a hurry, and keeping traffic moving and above all, everyone safe, is your responsibility as well as ours. Thank you for your cooperation. MM
To leave school early you son must have a note
Created : 10 Sep 2021, 9:14 AM
Archived : 10 Nov 2021, 12:00 AM
If your son must leave school earlier than 4pm, and you are collecting him, you MUST PROVIDE HIM WITH A NOTE IN HIS JOURNAL THAT MORNING, saying what time he is to leave class. Otherwise, the teacher will not allow him to leave the class. If you call to the office to collect him, he will not be downstairs waiting to sign out. In any day, 10 or more students could be leaving early. The office staff do not have the time, nor should they be expected to, leave their work and go searching for a student several times a day. At times they are the only one in the offce and are unable to leave at all. And if you have an appointment, you will be late, waiting for all this walking around, finding your son, waiting for him to pack up, etc, and come down to sign out. All this can be avoided with one short note. Your son may tell you he doesn't need a note, but he does. This makes your day and our day easier We do not use the intercom to call students down as it is a disturbance to teaching and learning, especially when all was required was a note. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated. Thank you MM

6th Year
This bunch of friendly faces completed their training during the summer and have already assisted the first years greatly in their transition to secondary school life. A great example of student leadership in our school. Wishing them the best of luck in all they endeavour.
