The summer holidays are drawing to a close and it's time to finalise the plan for next week, your first week in St Mary's CBS, your first week in secondary school. We know there is a combination of excitement and impatience in both parents and students, but also, understandably, the fear of the unknown. Who will be in your class, will you make new friends, what do you wear for the first day, bring on the following days, what if you can't remember your locker number or email password? Many questions but what are the answers?? Because we know your worries, we have planned the week so that Day One, Monday 23rd August, will be easy and casual... Wear no uniform, just your own casual clothes and footwear. Arrive in time for 9am. Bring a light snack and drink for your morning break. You will not need any books, pens or iPads. The 10 Meitheal Leaders, who are 6th years, will meet you and take you through the morning from 9am to 1pm. They have been trained to help you get to know one another and to mix with lads you don't know in a fun way so that you laugh and talk without realising it. They have a series of 'ice-breakers', games, orienteering around the school to familiarise you with the classrooms you will be using, how to read your timetable, introduce you to your lockers and combination locks, show you the school from a student's point of view - as they are students themselves. They will also answer your many questions. You will learn on Monday morning who your own Meitheal Leader is and how he will continue this support through all of first year. So it's not just next Monday that they will be available for you. When you leave at 1pm, you will be far more relaxed and ready to return the following morning. Monday evening, August 23rd, I will hold a Zoom Meeting with all First Year Parents/Guardians at 7.30pm for any further information or clarification. I will put the notification up on the App as to how the link will be available to you by Sunday. On Tuesday 24th August, all 1st years will be here from 9am to 12 noon. Again, no uniform, just bring snack/drink. This morning, Mr Brennan and his team of students will introduce you to our school’s IT (your login to our PC's, your new school email and password, introduce you to Microsoft Office and in particular Microsoft Teams, show you basic skills in how to send an email, etc.) These are very important skills which you'll be using each day and again, students only a few years older than yourselves, will be helping you along. At 12 noon, the students who don't have the Wriggle iPad will go home. Those who do have the Wriggle iPad, should have brought that with them into school. After a short break and snack, this group will learn how to use the iPads in class and other skills / guidelines specific to the use of iPads in school. This group will be finished at 2pm. On Wednesday, August 25th, only teachers will be in school - your first day off! On Thursday, August 26th, it's his first day to wear the full uniform, shoes and all. You should have paid for the lock and journal in advance on the App but if not, put the 20 euros in an envelope with your son's name on it and send in with him. He will receive his school journal and lock this morning, His Meitheal Leaders will be on hand to help him through it all. The Deputy Principals Mr Thompson and Mr Mulligan will speak with all class groups during the morning about how things run in school. No other students are in school today, just First Years. Each class will, at different times of this morning, sit their Incoming CAT4 Assessment Tests in one of the Computer Rooms. These tests last approx. 2 hours in total. Payment of 30 euros for these exams and future ones in 1st and 2nd year should be made, in advance, on our school App. Otherwise you may send the money in an envelope with your son’s name on it with him that morning. The day will end for all 1st years at 1.15. There will be no buses, please have a lift organised if necessary. On Friday, both 1st and 6th years will be in school from 9 – 1.15. First Years will be following their Timetables and attend 4 classes. All our classes are one hour. This is the first day that textbooks and copies will be used. The students should have brought in the books needed for Friday morning according to their timetable and they will have visited their lockers before 9am and again at their Break Time of 11.00. Again, the Meitheal Leaders will be in the areas of the lockers and probably helping them figure out their locks! Teachers will be introducing their subjects and getting to know their classes on this morning. Home then for the weekend, Week One is over!
New PE Uniform

Just a gentle reminder that all students, including 6th years, will be expected to wear the new uniform PE half zip and track suit bottoms for the days on which they have PE. To begin this year, as we did last September, students will wear their PE gear into school and remain in it for the full day, as we are not allowed to use the changing rooms yet. Our reasoning for expecting all years, including 6th years is as follows: Considering that each item of normal sports gear which they wear outside of school cost far more than the 45 euros for the same half zip jumper which will be worn up to twice a week, it is not bad value. The black track suit bottoms are 25 euros, and will probably just survive the year's wear. I do understand the outlay at the start adds up, but it's better value than lads wanting to wear various hoodies (named brands and expensive) and bottoms throughout the year. Those who can't afford the best hoodies and T shirts feel bad when comparing themselves to those who have the best of new clothing all the time. That is the value of uniforms. I hope you can understand our point of view. Thank you.

Clarification of 2nd year Booklists
Created : 08 Aug 2021, 4:00 PM
Archived : 08 Oct 2021, 12:00 AM
There was a mistake made to the Science and Religion texts on the Booklist which was put out earlier this summer. We realised it was an error, we did backtrack and change it in AllBooks and on other sources and platforms on which our Booklists are published. But it is difficult to be sure all changes were corrected and we obviously missed somewhere. I want to clarify now that for nearly all subjects in 2nd year, (except Irish, Maths, SPHE) the texts purchased/rented in 1st year WILL take your son through to the end of his Junior Cert. The 2nd year text for Science remains ‘Exploring Science’ and the correct Religion text remains ‘Inspire’. We must provide a specific year by year Booklist each June as new students joining the school in September and later in the year, require the Booklist for the year they are joining. It also provides information for materials and fees due for certain subjects. I apologise sincerely for this confusion and want to thank the few parents who have brought it to my attention this week. Also, please remember that for both Irish and Maths you should wait until September to purchase the new texts when your son’s level of study will be decided. This decision is based on the student’s results in 1st year, the teacher’s professional judgement and parent’s wishes based on this sdvice. Enjoy the remainder of your breaks. Thank you. MM

Update to 2019-20 Parents of TY’s awaiting refund

Apologies to parents expecting this refund earlier, it wasn’t as straightforward as we had expected. It involves working with the App through which many people paid. The App initially told us they could make the refunds to the parents directly, but they don’t have all parents card details. Nor do they know if every parent was fully paid up to be entitled to the same refund as everyone else. That is what caused the delay. The two issues will be dealt with together when the office reopens on August 16th. I do apologise for the delay. I was too eager to tell parents it would happen for them sooner rather than later and then realised that it wasn’t as simple as rewriting the same cheque to all. The office were very busy up to the 25th June when it closed and it has to wait now till be they return in August. I hope this explains the delay but the cheque will be in the post as soon as it can be arranged. Enjoy the summer and this amazing weather.
