Awards Day

Our Awards Day was held throughout the day on the 20th of May. This is a day to celebrate the amazing achievements of our students from 1st to 5th year. The main Awards Ceremony was held in our schools GPA and was live streamed to classrooms to ensure that even though we couldn't all be physically together we could all enjoy the celebrations together.
Students received awards for excellence in each subject area within their year group, with one overall winner per subject. Within their class groups one student received a 'Student of the Year' award, and finally an overall 'Student of the Year' was also chosen for each year group.
This year we also added some extra awards. With the chaotic year we have had we felt it was only right to acknowledge how students pushed through and thrived, despite all the adversity they faced. To celebrate this we awarded a 'Resilience Award' per class group also.
Here is CBS we are lucky to be blessed with so many amazing students. Every day we are greeted by friendly and polite students and we felt this deserved to be acknowledged. The final award we added to this years event was the 'Gentleman of the Year Award'. This was awarded to one student of each year group.
As a school we are very proud of all our students, and in particular we are proud of all the students who received recognition for their amazing work. Congratulations to all!

Ty Activities-Dublin Zoo

On Monday our TY’s set off in the sunshine to visit Dublin Zoo.
In December Dublin Zoo received €3 million in Government funding to cope with the loss in income due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Zoo has been a fantastic resource for many year groups in our school in the past as students engage in conservation education.
The TY’s did a self guided tour of the Zoo where at each habitat they read about animal care, so that the animals at Dublin Zoo live healthy, fulfilled lives. Students also learned about the Zoo partnering with conservation projects worldwide and in Ireland, to help animals to thrive in their natural habitats.
A great day was had by all!!

Congratulations and well done to the class of 2021 who received their academic and prestigious awards last Friday.
We began proceedings with a moments silence as a mark of respect for our late colleague, friend and teacher John Duggan. John in the past organised the awards night and always enjoyed celebrating our students successes.
The following were our academic award winners: Ann Prendergast Literary Award-John Davis, Gaeilge-Fergus Sheehy, Maths-Michal Astran, Geography-Darragh Beere, History-Matthew Delaney, Business Studies-Cian Territ, Accounting-Cian Aird, Biology-Jack Reddy and James Carroll, Physics-D.J O'Brien-Doyle, Chemistry-Aaron Thornton, DCG-Gary Keane, Construction Studies-Eddie Critchley and Adam Forrestal, Engineering-Marc Ramsbottom and Noah Fingelton, Home Economics-Murdo Anton, Agricultural Science-Patrick Corcoran, Art-George Simirnoff, French-Muhammad Khan, Spanish-Konrad Gradowski and L.C.V.P-Simon Fingelton.
Our current Meitheal team were presented with a Cross-pen and certificate, sponsored by the Parents Council. Our Meitheal Leaders were commended for the hard work they have put in over the past year working with our first year class groups.
Each year we have a ‘special recognition’ award. This year Ms Williams presented Ciaran Leonard with accolade for his artist talent and contribution to the world of art. Ciaran has been the winner of the national Texaco art competition, a first for our school. He has also been taking commissions for artwork for the past number of years.
Ms D Carroll presented her senior debating team with trophies to celebrate the group winning out the Laois schools debating contest. Two current students, Jack Delaney and John Davis, as well as two past students Thomas Dunne and Cian MacGearailt made up the team.
Finally, the afternoon was rounded off with the presentation of our prestigious perpetual trophies. This year the ‘Overall sports player of the year’ went to Paddy Hosey. Paddy is considered by his peers and coaches as a quiet leader who does most of his talking on the pitch. A dual player who plays both football and hurling for his club and school is well respected and looked up to in both circles. An all round sportsman with exceptional and a super attitude.
The ‘Martin Conroy Award’ is given to a student who has been most helpful and giving of himself to the school community during his time in the CBS. This year Christian Kenny Oman stood out as being a young man who personifies what it means to be a gentleman.
Our ‘From Each his Best’ award is aptly name after our school motto. This award is for the student who has consistently applied himself throughout his time in the CBS. This year’s award went to Afeeze Ganyu for his work ethic and application.
Lastly, our most anticipated award of ‘Student of the Year’ was presented to Richard Okpala. This young man is a gleaming example of hard work and dedication. Richard is a courteous, diligent young man who has been an excellent role model to not only his peers but also the entire student body here in St. Mary’s.
All 6th years were treated to pizza in their English and Irish classes as they watched proceedings being streamed live from the GPA.
Thank you to all who made the event an success!
