Notice for all Parents

Hello all, I hope this finds you all well. For our last term, all of our teachers will be continuing with their subjects as they were before Easter. Most of our teachers do their work on Microsoft Teams. For those of you who may not be familiar with this, your son must sign into Teams with his school email and password. All his teachers (bar 2 or 3 using Edmodo or have another way to keep in contact with their class) have all the class work, assignments, videos, links, resources, exam questions, etc. for your son to access and your son is meant to submit his work to his teacher on Teams. The teacher corrects, gives feedback etc. as they would normally do in school. There is a different Team group for each of his subjects. Parents are asked to keep an eye on this a few times a week if possible, and see when, perhaps, the teacher is having an online video, or when the next assignment is due, or, has your son signed in and submitted any work to date - as some have not. Teachers update their work and their plans regularly, sometimes daily. A good few are following the normal school timetable as seen on VSware. Homework which is not done and submitted to teachers will be noted on VSware on the Behaviour Tab from this week. All parents have had access to their son's Personal Profile, Reports, Timetable and Attendance in the past. From today, you can view if son has not submitted his work to the teacher on the Behaviour Tab. Hopefully you will not see any increase in your own son's No Homeworks. If you do, please do your best to keep them back on task. We know this is a difficult job sometimes, but one that is necessary, if your situation at home is suitable to it. We do understand that it may not be. Year heads rang home and spoke to many parents before Easter. Hopefully that reminder, to engage with their work till the end of the Term, will be enough. How important is it to engage with the school work being assigned, your son may say to you? Very important. Their engagement, the work submitted, between now and May 29th form a large part of the Reports from his teachers at the end of Term. We are in totally unchartered territory here - there's school but there's no school. There's JC and LC but then there's not. But we are keeping a new form of school going, one run mainly online, which unfortunately, doesn't suit those with poor Wifi, or no devices. But all subjects have to keep moving forward. There will be Reports at the end of May. Continuous assessment is happening. We had a Staff Meeting yesterday and all subject departments are meeting during this week. It was only on Good Friday, in the middle of the Easter Break, that the Lockdown was extended to May 5th and further plans had to be made his week for the rest of Term. I assure you that our teachers are doing their best to keep your son's education moving forward. Some of you are, no doubt, asking what if we have no laptop at home or the Wifi is useless? We are self-isolating in the home and it is difficult, someone is very sick, etc. We accept this is the case for some. It is also the case for several of our teachers who have little or no WiFi where they live, and are limited in what they can upload. Our teachers also have a lot going on in their lives, like everyone in the country. Some have been caring for sick relatives etc, themselves. So everyone is doing what works best for them. But your son is being told what is going on by each of his teachers, and what is expected of him. Don't let him tell you he’s not. My email is mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com. If there is something that you, as a concerned parent, feels that I should be made aware of, please do contact me. Especially if the virus is in your home and impacting on your son and his work. If you son can't access or submit work due to technology, unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about that. He can still take out his books and follow on with the chapters, read the novels poems etc, review work done before the lockdown. There is work he can do so that next September he will have something concrete completed. We will update this again with more details about summer exams, what will happen to 3rd years and 6th years (awaiting a Government announcement for those) and anything else. Take care of yourselves and each other. MM

Have you younger children who are concerned about Corona-19? Please read on...

This simple book is for our little people who are listening to the sad stories, and know that life has changed utterly for everyone, they don't have their friends, and they can't see their grandma's and grandad's - why wouldn't they have questions? But maybe they don't know how to word their concerns. This book was sent to me by a paediatric nurse who knows how little ones think, how they watch and worry about what they hear. And it is so easy to read and discuss with your younger children. We hope it is a help for some of you in these difficult times. nursedottybooks.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/dave-the-dog-coronavirus-1-1.pdf
