When does tuition and communication end between LC students and teachers?

The following clarification on the Government’s FAQ page has been added today: 32. When does tuition to final year Leaving Certificate students cease, given that calculated grades are being put in place? As of 11 May 2020, tuition (whether online or in other ways) ceased for sixth-year leaving certificate students. This applies to the Leaving Certificate established, Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) and Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP). No additional work will be accepted from students from this date. Teachers and students may not discuss the student’s achievement in the subject over the past two years. Nor can they discuss the student’s ranking in a class, or their estimated mark or the level at which an estimated mark is to be provided in a subject. However, students remain students of the school until the end of the school term. In terms of the school’s role in supporting the wellbeing of Leaving Certificate students, the role of the Student Support Team as set out in the guidance issued recently to schools, should remain available until the end of the school term. You can access links to the supports provided by the National Education Psychological Service (NEPS) here. Further updates will be notified to members as they arise.

Letter to our 6th Years and Parents about new LC Guidelines
Created : 09 May 2020, 1:24 PM
Archived : 09 Jul 2020, 12:00 AM
Dear Students and Parents, At last we have a plan, a new and unusual plan - a system of Calculated Grades - but one which maintains a timeline which is probably as close to a normal 6th year / CAO timeline which we will get this year, with some exceptions. In our school the process of arriving at a Calculated Grade applies to: • Established Leaving Cert - subjects • Leaving Cert Vocational Programme - Link Modules A Calculated Grade is a grade that can be provided to students following the combination of school information about a student’s expected performance in an examination and national data available in relation to the performance of students in examinations over a period of time. A Calculated Grade results from the combination of two data sets: • A school-based estimation of an overall percentage mark and ranking to be awarded to a student in a particular subject • Data available from the State Examinations Commission – this includes data on past performance of students in each school and nationally. The combination of these data sets through a process of national standardisation can determine the grade to be awarded to each student in each subject, thereby resulting in a Calculated Grade. There are two main phases in the process of arriving at a Calculated Grade: • A school-based phase • A national standardisation phase The role of the school The role of the school is to provide marks and rankings that reflect: • An estimation of the percentage mark in each subject that each candidate is likely to have achieved if they had sat the Leaving Certificate examination in 2020 under normal conditions; • A class ranking for each student in each subject – i.e. a list of all the candidates for a particular subject in a class in the order of their estimated level of achievement. In providing the above estimated marks and rankings, there will be four main school-based steps: 1. The teacher’s estimation of student marks and rankings 2. School alignment of marks for a subject through a subject alignment group comprising teachers who are teaching the subject to Leaving Certificate students this year 3. Oversight of the alignment process by the school principal 4. Transmission of the marks and rankings for national standardisation Each of these steps is set out in detail in the booklet ‘A Guide to Calculated Grades for Leaving Certificate Students 2020’ available to download from Government website and is a PDF link on this App as part of this notification. The earlier arrangement (communicated in March) that full marks would be awarded in respect of the orals and music performance tests - will not now apply as the examinations will not proceed. In addition to the Calculated Grades process, provision has also been made for a three-stage Appeals Process involving: • A series of checks that data were correctly entered at school level and correctly transferred to the DES • A review that the data were correctly received and processed by the DES • If a candidate remains dissatisfied after notification of outcome of the above two stages, verification of the DES processes by independent appeal scrutineers Finally, and in the spirit of fairness to all Leaving Certificate students, the option of sitting the Leaving Certificate examinations when it becomes feasible to hold them remains open to all students. The next step is for the teacher unions to consider this process and that the steps as framed in the Guideline document will not be implemented until we have confirmation of their agreement. No results will be issued to students until the date in September as set by the Department of Education / SEC. As you can see from the above Guidelines, this process is guided by a robust structure of stages and responsibilities by all those involved – teachers, school principal, the State Exams Commission. Calculated grades means evidence based grades. I have every confidence in our teachers that this difficult task of calculating the grades of their students and aligning them to a standard with their colleagues will be carried out with the utmost professionalism and integrity. As always, the school principals and teachers have learned of each new development on RTE News and on social media. We don’t have any further information other than what the general public already knows. I have updated you here with all that we know. We await further clarification and updates and I ask that you keep an eye to the App for any further updates. I genuinely hope that this goes someway towards answering the queries about the months ahead for all of the 6th years. • There is the opportunity to sit the LC later on, • no exam in the middle of July/August which would drag out your lives, • the CAO system is working with this system, so college is an option, • those who were upset that they had worked so hard for the orals to get the edge will now benefit from their teacher’s evidence of their strength in that area, • an Appeals system will be in place, and • there is a timeline, distorted, but a timeline. I have been closely involved at every stage of State Exams for many years and few could imagine how much detailed planning goes into the State Exams when they are simply repeated each year. I can’t begin to think how much thought, consultation and compromise has gone into this set of Guidelines, in spite of what the critics say. To our 6th years you can now begin to relax, which you really deserve to do. Take care, the Guidance Counsellors, myself, and the teachers are still here to support you. Please do reach out if you want. We will make a plan for your Graduation and Awards at a later date, it has been very much in our thoughts these past weeks. But it will happen, we won’t forget you at all. Take care of yourselves. With kindest regards, Maura Murphy Principal

Babatunde's mother passed away yesterday but due to Covid-19 restrictions the funeral is private. It would be nice if members of the school community left a message of condolence on RIP.ie for Tunde to let him know at this especially lonely time that we are all thinking of him and his loss. His mother's name is Omolabake Kayode if you are searching for it on RIP.ie. Thank you.
