Hi all Ms. O’Connell and I hope that all students and their families are healthy and coping well in these extraordinary times.
We want you all to know that work in all subjects continues insofar as possible and staff are posting work regularly and are available through ‘Teams’. Never before has the concept of Independent Learning as championed by the Transition Year ethos been so relevant.
Please note there will be end of year reports which will account for student engagement with project work, homework, competitions and overall commitment throughout the year as well as this term.
We plan to have an awards ceremony on return to school to celebrate the achievements and positive contributions of students to the many courses, opportunities and challenges which were on offer this year, some of which I will mention below. Any outstanding work must be completed in the next few weeks for the summer reports.
Microsoft Office examinations.....see Ms.O’Neill’s communication and Mr.Cahillane’s instructions for completion of exams at home.
GAA Future Leaders Programme... students can achieve full certification by completing 4 modules(badges), as it is not now a requirement to organise an event.
An Gaisce.... the bronze medal can be achieved on completion of the challenges and students have to organise a ‘virtual’ expedition... see Mr. Dooley and Ms.Mulhare.
E Portfolio should be completed now for inspection . Students have recorded and analysed events, educational outings , guest speakers, competitions ,work experience every Wednesday etc and the e portfolio can now be checked and completed by each student for presentation .
Art: The art installation commissioned by the Tidy Towns is ready for display in the office of Permanent T.S.B. on Main Street.
Speech and Drama. The Irish Board of Speech and Drama examination rendered 2 gold medals, the school anthem was produced and work is continuing this term with assignments and podcasts etc. Also students can continue making music with their ukulele.
Mini Company: The mini co ‘Boot Bristles’ was awarded a prize of 200 euro as a result of a win at The Laois Enterprise competition. The county phase had to be cancelled due to Covid. All business students have been assigned a project for assessment this month.
Science Department : the Sci Fest competition happened in February and from this the winning team was selected to go forward to the finals in Carlow It. Students can continue to engage with our Science Dept. And with Carlow I.T. Who are on line with educational videos etc.
TY Religion : there was a strong emphasis on volunteering and Social Justice in this year’s Religion Programme for TY. One notable example was the group who introduced the nursing home ‘Befriending’ system for the Dromnin Nursing Home under the auspices of SVP.
Young Social Innovators.... students took their project to Kilkenny for a ‘Speak Out’ in March and and they will now reflect and report on same for assessment .
Film: one team qualified for the ‘Walk in my shoes ‘ and the ‘Fresh ‘ Film festival with their entry.
All the core subjects are being accommodated remotely with Maths continuing the ‘Build Up’ project and some engaging in preparation for Higher Level Maths in September.
In English students should finish the Sports Journalism component of the Future Leaders by completing the interview or commentary on line, both of which have already been posted in Teams.
Irish students are assigned work to prepare for senior cycle and in Politics and Society students will write an analytical report on government approach to the current pandemic.
In Modern Languages students should have completed a number of projects and will be required to do oral work and more this term from Teams.
Finally Peter Atanasov did himself proud by volunteering to help out with pharmaceutical deliveries to people in isolation. This was reported on Laois Today. If anyone is doing any volunteering out there please let us know as we are certain great kindness is happening all around us and we know the volunteering spirit was keenly demonstrated many times during this TY year.
Kind regards to all and best wishes to stay safe

Dear Parent/Guardian(s) of Third Year Students,
As you may be aware, there are many articles regarding the proposed Junior Certificate 2020 currently circulating in the media. You will see a number of schools proposing to set their own exams, all adopting different structures and assessment techniques. Following the latest advice, received this morning Monday April 29th from the Joint Managerial Body, an advisory group is discussing the issue to settle on what it sees as the best way forward. We are asked to await the outcome of these discussions, later in the week, before making any local decision. We as a school will await this direction and we will clarify same with you, as we receive it. However, rest assured there will be a terminal exam for all 3rd Year students, so we ask you to continue to support and encourage your son(s) to engage with his teachers in his studies in preparation for same.
As always should you have any issues, that we as a school can help you or your son with, don’t hesitate to contact the relevant staff member via email.
We as a school wish you and your family continued good health during these turbulent times.

RTÉ Short Story Competition 2020
WE WANT YOUR SHORT STORIES!
RTÉ SHORT STORY COMPETITION 2020 INVITES SUBMISSIONS
RTÉ is currently accepting short story submissions for one of Ireland's longest established and most significant literary prizes, the RTÉ Short Story Competition in honour of Francis MacManus.
Writers have until Friday 8th May to submit their short story which will be judged by a panel of three judges: editor, lecturer and journalist, Madeleine Keane; award-winning short story writer and previous prize-winner of the RTÉ Short Story Competition, Danielle McLaughlin; and writer and broadcaster, Vincent Woods.
Previous prize-winner and judge for 2020, Danielle McLaughlin, says: "I'll never get tired of the thrill of hearing somebody read one of my stories on the radio. A story told over the radio carries a particular intimacy, a sense that the telling of the story is a private thing between narrator and the individual listener. For the writer of the story, of course, there's the wonder of realising that the story you wrote at the kitchen table, or in a café, is being heard by thousands. I still remember the joy of getting the phone call telling me I'd been shortlisted for the competition! So for anybody who has a story they'd like to get out into the world: get your entry in. You've got nothing to lose and wonderful things might happen."
The shortlist of 10 stories will be announced by early September, while the winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in RTÉ later in September.
The overall winner will receive €3,000, while €2,000 and €1,000 will be awarded to the second and third place prize winners respectively. A further seven runners-up will receive €250 each, and all 10 short stories will be broadcast in a season of new writing on RTÉ Radio 1 in the autumn. The top three prizewinning stories will also be published on thejournal.ie.
The RTÉ Short Story Competition has been championing new talent for decades with the winning and shortlisted short stories being produced for radio broadcast and voiced by some of Ireland’s most talented actors of the stage and screen. In recent years these have included Peter Hanly, Ali White, Emmet Kirwan, Cathy Belton, Ingrid Craigie, Denis Conway, Andrew Bennett, Caitríona Ní Mhurchú, Kathy-Rose O'Brien, and many more.
See Competition Rules and please note, submissions may now be entered either online at the following form, or by post, in either case to be received by 5pm on Friday 8th May 2020. Address for postal entries: RTÉ Short Story Competition, RTÉ Radio Centre, Donnybrook, Dublin 4, Ireland.

About the Competition
The RTÉ Short Story Competition has been a critically important launch pad for new and emerging writers since its inception in 1986, with a wide ranging appeal including young aspiring authors in Ireland.
A competition for original short stories for radio was first established in 1986 in honour of the RTÉ Radio Head of Features and acclaimed novelist, Francis MacManus (1909-1965). Since then, it has been a source of encouragement, support and recognition for new, emerging writers as well as established names. Past winners have gone on to receive national and international acclaim, including Claire Keegan, Molly McCloskey, Ivy Bannister, Anthony Glavin and Nuala O’Connor, and many more.
