Summer Exam Timetables for 1st and 2nd years

Please click on pdf to find your exam timetable below. Exams will be done at home, on a device (phone/laptop/PC/tablet) which you need to have organised before hand. Try to plan in advance to ensure that the student will be able to sit down for 1.5 - 2 hours, uninterrupted, with some device, on that date and time. If you genuinely have a problem with the lack of device or WiFi or illness, please email cyrilmulligan@portlaoisecbs.com well in advance and we will try to reach another solution. They do not need to type it on a laptop. They need to be able to read it on their phone, use their own sheets of paper to write their name, question number and also page numbers. When exam is completed they screen shoot the numbered pages, in order, and email, upload to Teams or submit by whatever means the teacher has given them instructions for. The method of receiving and submitting the exams are : -Teacher sends the exam paper on Microsoft Teams or whatever platform they have been using to date with their students; -The student can answer some of it on the exam paper on Teams. Some longer answers or diagrams etc should be written on pages of their own, clearly labelled with the correct question number and a page number on each page used. -When complete, within the time specified, the student should submit what is done on line to the teacher and take screenshots of the written pages in numbered order, to be sent to the teacher. -All this should be done no later than half an hour after the final time of the exam as per the TT. We understand how strange all this is for you, as it is for us. Thank you for your continued support at this difficult time. Finally, if a family member is sick, or the student is sick, there is no WiFi, you can't get a device, please email me well in advance. mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com Thank you.

ATTENTION - IN HOUSE JC EXAM TIMETABLE HERE!

Archived : 01 Jul 2020, 12:00 AM
We are publishing our JC Exam Timetable today, in advance of these exams beginning on May 13th and ending on May 22nd. They are being run in the same sequence of subjects as the real TT normally runs. Following the guidance of the Minister of Education this week, the majority of work being assessed was covered up to the 12th March school closure. Reports will be issued in June, the Department of Education will provide a Certificate of Completion and we will have a ceremony acknowledging this important milestone in their education when we return to school. Further details will be included in guidelines along with a copy of this Timetable to be posted out to all 3rd years next week. It also allows people time to ensure that the student will be able to sit down for 1.5 - 2 hours, uninterrupted, with a laptop or some device, on that date and time. Special accommodations such as readers, scribes, special centres, etc are outside of our control. However, being at home and having a person within the home supporting their reading, if required, should be adequate. Those using assistive technology, will continue to use their laptops or iPads, as normal for them. The Spelling and Grammar waiver, which is normally applied to the language marking schemes of English, Irish, French and Spanish will also be taken into account by the teachers when marking papers for those students. Perhaps most importantly, the method of receiving and submitting the exams will be : -Teacher sends the exam paper on Microsoft Teams or whatever platform they have been using to date with their students; -The student can answer some of it on the exam paper on Teams. Some longer answers or diagrams etc should be written on pages of their own, clearly labelled with the correct question number and a page number on each page used. -When complete, within the time specified, the student should submit what is done on line to the teacher and take screenshots of the written pages in numbered order, to be sent to the teacher by school email. -All this should be done no later than half an hour after the final time of the exam as per the TT. We understand how strange all this is for you, as it is for us. Thank you for your continued support at this difficult time. Finally, if a family member is sick, or the student is sick, there is no WiFi, you can't get a device, please email me in advance.

Dear Transition Year Co-ordinator, We would like to introduce you to the STEPS Engineering Your Future @ Home video series. This initiative will run from May 6th to 29th 2020. The STEPS Engineering Your Future Programme (STEPS EYF) is designed to inspire Transition Year students to study engineering. STEPS EYF is an engineering experience programme that gives Transition Year students a hands-on, fun and practical insight into engineering at third-level and as a career. STEPS EYF is coordinated by the Engineers Ireland STEPS programme and is hosted by third level institutes and industry around Ireland. A total of 18 programmes were planned for the period March -May 2020. Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 crisis only 5 of these took place in early March. In total over 1100 students have applied to participate in STEPS EYF for 2020 and the STEPS Team would like to offer a taste of STEPS Engineering Your Future @ Home. While it is impossible to recreate the hands-on experience of STEPS EYF completely, we have come up with three video presentations and three challenges aimed at Transition Year students who are interested in a potential career in Engineering. Of course, these videos are open to all students and their families to view. Three videos are developed and delivered by Mark Langtry, Physicist and Head of Science and Sport at Explorium. The STEPS Engineering Your Future @ Home series comprises three videos Video 1- “Electrical Engineering- Home Communications Challenge” Release date Wednesday 6th May 2020 Challenge deadline date Friday 15th May 2020. Video 3- “Product design- The Ultimate Alarm Clock” Release date Wednesday 13th May 2020 Challenge deadline date Friday 29th May 2020. Entries only valid from students currently in Transition Year in Ireland. All entries for challenges can be sent to steps@engineersireland.ie Entries can be in any format e.g. video, photograph, drawing, text etc. We will ask all participants if we have their permission to post their entries on social media. - All third year Junior Cycle students to be awarded certificates for the completion of Junior Cycle by the Department of Education and Skills - Schools given autonomy to assess students and all students to receive a report on achievement - Adult learners to be given opportunity to take final Junior Cycle examinations in autumn The Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh TD has today (Wednesday 29 April 2020) announced revised arrangements for this year’s Junior Cycle. The decision was taken following recommendations from an advisory group of stakeholders as part of planning for the State Examinations in response to the Covid-19 public health measures and the decision that the Junior Cycle State Examinations will not run this year. Minister McHugh attended the meeting of the advisory group and thanked the members for their work. Minister McHugh said: “In this difficult time for students I have listened to the very strongly-held and well-articulated views of students, parents and other stakeholders,” “This decision has been made with the health and wellbeing of students, parents and teachers at the forefront of our thinking. “It gives students and their families more clarity and certainty. It also gives schools freedom to decide how best to assess the progress of students following three years of hard work and learning.” Under the revised arrangements and in light of the exceptional circumstances presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the work and achievement of third year Junior Cycle students will be recognised with a state certificate from the Department of Education and Skills. As soon as possible after the end of the current school year, students will receive a written school report on their learning achievements in each subject, short course and/or priority learning unit Schools are also being given autonomy to decide whether to run school-based assessments and what form they take. Options to consider include school-designed examinations, tasks, projects, assignments, essay style questions, presentations, or other tasks agreed at a local level. Guidance for schools on reporting to students and parents, developed with the advice of the advisory group of stakeholders, will be published by the Department. The State Examinations Commission is also being asked to put in place specific arrangements for adult learners to give them an opportunity to take final Junior Cycle examinations for which they are entered in autumn 2020. Ends Notes for Editors For info on the advisory group see here Further advice in relation to assessment options for schools will be issued by the Department. Certificate of Completion This will issue from the Department early in the next school year. It will provide each student with a certificate confirming completion of the Junior Cycle programme of study, including the list of subjects, short courses and/or priority learning units studied and the level at which the subject was studied. Adult Learners The SEC will put in place specific arrangements for adult learners who are studying a subject or subjects at Junior Cycle level within one academic year. The specific dates of the examinations in autumn 2020 will be determined as soon as possible. These examinations will only be available to students who meet the specific qualifying criteria.
