The second of two matches was the Senior’s Quarter Final against Bagnelstown of Carlow. After hearing about the result of the junior match, along with some inspirational words from the coaches, the players were fired up for this important game. Sam Birrane started the game kicking off in the miserable conditions and once again a big hit came in, and early in the game that set the tone for the CBS lads. With some brilliant defending from CBS the ball was turned over and CBS were eyeing up the try line. With a nice switch play in the middle of the field Adam Duffin set Liam Óg Brennan free to run from the 22 under the posts for the first score of the game. Birrane adding the extra points after.
CBS received the ball from the kickoff and the forwards were making some powerful runs, with the backs making the hard yards out wide. A quick line break from Duffin set CBS on the attack but a last ditch tackle put the out half down and CBS were penalized for not releasing. The resulting kick put Bagnelstown on the front foot. From the resulting lineout they played clever rugby and got near the CBS try line. A quick pop pass let Bagnelstown in for their first score of the match. They added the points after.
CBS had to finish the half on a high and did so with brilliant performances from every man on the field. The half was nearly over and CBS had to step up the ante. Duffin saw a clearing in the Bagnelstown line and made a break for it, bouncing off players and sniping down the wing to slide over in the corner for CBS’s second try. Birrane failed to add the difficult conversion. The half time whistle blew and CBS went to the dugouts to regroup. CBS were kicking off in the second half, Birrane got the game underway and kicked for the forwards who were chasing the ball ferociously. With a quick turnover CBS were on the attack again and with some powerful running from Ryan McEvoy and Ger Campbell, CBS were making the hard yards. They attacked the line time after time and they had no way through, Campbell received the ball 5 meters out and some great upper body strength he managed to power over the line for CBS’s 3rd score of the game, Birrane failing to add the extras.
CBS received the ball again and drove at the Carlow men in 2s and 3s. With a neat switch play Duffin threw the ball out wide for Birrane to collect and he turned on the after burners leaving the Carlow men chasing shadows. Birrane touched down with 20 minutes to go. Duffin stepped up and the ball swerved with the wind and failed to go over the posts. CBS received the kickoff but with some intense defense from the Carlow men saw Liam Óg Lynch clearing his lines. From the lineout Bagnelstown kicked the ball right back to the portlaoise side. Michael Daly collected the ball and ran straight for the corner only to be tackled around the neck. From the resulting penalty saw portlaoise go for the corner. Captain Adrian brought the ball down to Jordan Radcliffe who with a neat over hand throw set Adam Duffin free again to run a clear path to the try line. Birrane failing to add the extras with the wind kicking up a notch. In the dying moments of the match CBS gave a penalty away for not releasing on their 22. The Carlow men opted for the corner and had to come up with something before the game was over. With a sneaky play and a pop pass Bagnelstown got in in the corner. Failing to add the difficult extras the referee blew the full time whistle. CBS were happy to come off today with a great win against a tough side. CBS seniors now move onto their Semifinal which is yet to be decided. Portlaoise CBS 27 Bagnelstown 12

Junior Match V St. Benildus Kilmacud

Today both our Junior and Senior teams were playing in the Leinster Cup Quarter Final on Friday, first up was the juniors. CBS kicked off in the wet conditions and had one intention clear, starting the game strong, which they did, with a crunching tackle to start the game. It was a miserable day and CBS made do with what they had, they were met with ferocious runners by the St Benildus forwards, with the backs being very quick and skillful. The first 10 minutes of the match was all CBS. Powerful running from CBS man on the match Steven Keegan kept Benildus on the backfoot with some skillful moves from Conor Ragget slipping through tackles just to be stopped short a few times. CBS came close to the try line a few times but a well drilled defense of Benildus held their line strong and didn’t let CBS cross the white line. In the end CBS were beaten by a stronger team in the end.
