World Book Day

In honour of World Book Day, the English Department invited a number of published authors to speak to the various year groups. On Thursday the 7th Ray Croke, a local author spoke to our 6th year English students. He described how his love of stories came from the ones he heard from his grandfather, to the books he read as a child, borrowed each week from the local library. On Monday the 11th Brian Gallagher , a writer of 15 novels talked about his process and day to day writing schedule with our second years. And finally on Monday afternoon Martine Madden, from Ballinakill, chatted to 1st and 5th years about her book Anyush , which is a story about the Armenian massacre at the beginning of the twentieth century. All three authors were delighted with the interest shown by our enthusiastic students . We teachers were impressed with the variety of questions posed by the boys. We all learned a lot about the difficulties all writers face in getting published and how aspiring writers need huge self belief and dogged determination in order to land a book deal. Martine told the boys that editing and re-editing is key to success, which has become a key feature to the new junior cycle English exam.

Our Under 14 Hurlers played the third round of their hurling championship against St Josephs Rochfortbridge today at home. Our boys were slow to start letting Rochfortbridge get into an early lead of 1 goal to no score. The lads settled quickly however with captain Barry Fitzpatrick hitting 5 frees successfully in a row followed by a goal and a point from corner forward Dylan Duff. Our boys continued to show their dominance with a goal and two points from centre forward Dylan Cahill pushing us into a strong lead at the break on a score of 3-11 to 1-1. Some very hard work from Conor Raggott and Adam Ramsbottom kept CBS ticking over. A raft of changes from both sides at half time saw a very free and open flowing game in the second half. CBS continued to show their dominance with 3 goals in a row from full forward Brochan O Reilly and the final effort showing a lovely bit of ground hurling. Despite our dominance Rochfortbridge came back into the game with a flurry of well worked goals. Final score CBS 6-18 to Rochfortbridge 7-6. Ones to watch for the CBS on the day Adam Ramsbottom, Barry Fitzpatrick Conor Raggott and Brochan O Reilly
