Our 1st year rugby team travelled to Naas Rugby club today for the North Leinster 1st Year plate final versus St Kevins CC Dunlavin. The game started with a flurry of attacks from Dunlavin with their powerful No8 driving at our defense. Having said this our defense held strong and weathered the storm. A quick backs move with brilliant hands saw Conor Raggett break away for a great solo try. Dunlavin kept coming and we played the majority of the first half in our own half. An opportunistic break from prop Colm Buggy helped to set up Paddy Reddin which saw him evade the Dunlavin defense to get in for a great try which Raggett duly converted from the touchline to wrap up the first half CBS 14 - Dunlavin 0. After a brisk half time break Dunlavin started strongest in the second half powering over for a try. We had to regroup and that we did, some fantastic work from our back line saw a great passing move set up tight head prop Callum Keegan for a great try in the corner. CBS kept up the pressure and a great backs move resulted in outhalf Jake Darcy crossing the white wash. Dunlavin weren't done and they came again with another great try from there powerful No8. But CBS rallied again and second row Callum Fogarty made a powerful break setting us up on the Dunlavin try line with outhalf Jake Darcy on the receiving end of another great pass to set him up for his second try under the posts. At this stage in the game we were in a comfortable 35 - 10 lead and all subs were introduced. Two of these lads having an instant impact with winger Daniel Harty speeding threw the Dunlavin defense for a great solo effort followed up by a super solo effort from second row Kasper Banasik. Final score: St Marys CBS 49 St Kevins CC Dunlavin 10. Man of the match on the day was tight head prop Callum Keegan. Callum started the 3 previous games as a winger and duely obliged to play prop today due to an injury getting in for a try to sign off on a super performance. Tries: Conor Raggett Paddy Reddin Callum keegan Dan Harty Kasper Banasik Jake Darcy X2 Conversions: Conor Raggett X4 PJ Larkin A huge thanks to Kyle Byrne for all his work with both the U16 and 1st year rugby teams on our first year as a rugby school.

A tough day at the office on Friday for our U14 hurlers. It was always going to be a challenge travelling to play St Fearghals in their back yard. We didnt start well with Rathdowney working up a 1-1 to no score lead after a couple of minutes. Having said this we re-grouped and got ourselves back into the game with points from Brochan O Reilly and Barry Fitzpatrick. The first half was tit for tat and finished 1-3 to 2-4 in favour of Rathdowney. We never got going in the second half and Rathdowney pulled away with a couple of quick goals and points. A few more scores from Barry and Brochan kept us in touch but sadly it wasnt to be our day with Rathdowney pulling away to finish the game on a scoreline of 1-8 to 4-12 in their favour. Sadly that brings an end to CBS school hurling for this year.

If you are wondering about repeating 5th year...read on...

Every year a few come to me to ask about repeating 5th year. This is not an automatic right for any student, nor is it entirely up to the Principal to decide on our own criteria. The Department of Education & Skills (DES) have strict categories which a school must satisfy in order for a student to be allowed - it is, after all, the DES who pay for it through capitation. If you have already spoken to me or indeed, haven't spoken to me, and you have a genuine reason why you feel you should repeat, please bring a letter from your parents explaining the reason. You also need to get a Subject Option Form for 5th year and complete it and bring it to me along with your parent's letter. At this stage, I really only need to make provision for subject options and class sizes going forward. This week we will begin this process. Thank you. MMurphy
