Basketball is very strong in St Mary’s CBS, even more so since we moved to our new school with its excellent sports facilities. Most of our CBS players began their sporting career with the Portlaoise Panthers Club. As the school and Club teams are working with the same young players, we share a close cooperative spirit, for everyone’s good.
This summer, the Panthers funded a scholarship for one of our incoming 1st years who has demonstrated a work ethic and willingness to learn which is above and beyond players of their age, whilst showing exceptional respect for teamates, coaches and the Club. We had several applicants and are happy to announce the winner of that group who is Prince C Iheme, coming from Scoil Bhride NS.
We look forward to the start of the schools' basketball season and our new first year team. Congratulations to the boys and their parents who applied, the standard was very high. We acknowledge the commitment of all parents who put their time and energy into driving and following their sons’ training and matches. Without this support they would not be able to achieve what they have done so, to date.
This coming school year sees the strongest collaboration with Portlaoise Rugby Football Club since Rugby began here in 2018 under Mr Conor Ryan. The Club have funded 2 scholarships for 2 of our incoming 1st years who have demonstrated a work ethic and willingness to learn which is above and beyond players of their age, whilst showing exceptional respect for teamates, coaches and the Club. We had several applicants and are happy to announce the two winners of that group this evening.
Jack Downey, coming in from Rathineska NS and a strong player on the PRFC on their U13 Team.
Dylan Clear, coming in from The Heath NS, who has captained his U12 and U13 Team, playing as Full Back.
We look forward to having these lads and the other applicants on our side when the schools' rugby season begins! Congratulations to all parents whose sons' applied, as the people who get them to this level and don't get the shout out as often as they should are you, the parents!
Due to holidays and the normal coming and going during the summer months, the presentations will be made over the coming weeks. No dates have been set yet.
Due to the Ploughing Match which takes place in Rathineska during the week of September 19th - 21st, we have realised it would not be possible to have our Open Night as originally planned on September 21st. We have moved it back to Thursday September 14th from 6pm - 9pm instead. Other notifications in local media will be made before then to advertise the event. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause people, but I'm sure everyone will agree that transport around the Portlaoise and surrounding areas during that week is nearly impossible. Thank you.
