Sci Fest Results

Before midterm the TYs participated in SciFest@School, a science exhibition showcasing their work investigating a topic of their choice. They spent months working on their experiments and write ups. They presented their projects to a panel of external judges who were very impressed by all their hard work. Each SciFest project consists of a poster displaying their findings, a detailed report booklet outlining their research, their experimental methods, the results and their conclusions as well as the oral presentation. There were some really great projects and ideas!
The lads put in a lot of time and effort and it paid off. The judges did not have an easy time deciding on the winners.
The SciFest Award went to Jack Murrell, Darragh Prendergast and Aaron Keane for their project titled "Factors that affect riad fatalities"
Runner up prize winners were Rhys Kelly, Luke Devitt and Ben Birrane for their project "Natural-born vs Incubated Chicks"
And Overall winners with top prize was "How dirty is your money? " by Pauric Ramsbottom, Cathal Tierney and James Norton. The lads now move onto the regional competition, SciFest@College in TUS Athlone in April.
Well done everyone
!

Congratulations to the Lego Robotics first and second year teams on their achievements in the Lego League Superpowered Competition before mid-term! The students were required to design and code a robot to complete challenges, and present their work to a panel of judges. Each team also designed an innovation project, on how to combat energy dissipation both in the CBS and throughout Portlaoise. ️
The first year team placed with medals and certificates of achievements for their efforts, and the second year team won first place in robot design for the second year in a row!
Well done to all involved!

CBS 7 - 4 Rathangan CS

An early day of travelling it was for CBS’ U/15s as they made the trip up to Rathangan. Having previously lost 2-1 to them the pressure was on as it was straight knockout football.
CBS started perfectly with an early goal from Jack Cleland with a well hit finish into the bottom left corner. CBS kept the pressure up with Jack Cleland grabbing a second on the line following great work from Mark O’Connor.
The next 10 minutes were tense moments for CBS as keeper Joshua Corbett made a double save to keep the lead at 2-0. To wrap up the first half Jan had a fantastic run through Rathangans midfield before putting the ball into the top left corner with ease. HT Rathangan 0-3 Portlaoise CBS.
2nd Half
Yet again CBS started just as they wanted as within 5 minutes of the start they added a fourth through Cian Fitzpatrick. Corners were a large part of CBS’ success throughout the day. More goals followed with Tiernan and Jack Cleland grabbing his Hat-Trick for the day. Although CBS were comfortable the fight wasn’t over as Rathangan fought back grabbing 4 quick goals pulling the score back to make it 6-4. As tensions built it was Jack Phelan who relieved them with a last minute finish to seal the deal. It was a good day for the Brothers with many men playing out of their skin. Mentions go to Joshua Corbett for his heroic saves, Harry Browne and Mark O’Connor for bossing their parts of the pitch and finallyJack Cleland who was clinical in front of goal with his hat-trick. Ft Rathangan 4-7 Portlaoise CBS.
Thanks to Transition Year Students Darragh Prendergast and Aaron Keane for the match report and photos.
Scorers :
Jack Cleland 3
Jan Gdowski 1
