Today 2nd Year St. Canice investigated the effect of increasing surface area on the rate of carbon dioxide production. They reacted calcium carbonate (both marble chips and powder separately) and hydrochloric acid. They saw that the more surface area of the calcium carbonate that was exposed to the hydrochloric acid, the faster the rate of reaction. They learned by increasing surface area they can increase how quickly a reaction happens. #sciencefacts #fromeachtheirbest

This fun run is aimed at raising money for Student Development here in the school, so to cover the ever-rising costs of guest speakers, school trips, extracurricular activates etc. It is our hope that all students will raise a minimum of 20 euros each for sponsorship to take part in the Fun Run. All monies raised are solely to benefit the students’ needs here in the school. We would hope that as parents and guardians you would all encourage your sons to return the sponsorship cards that they received with the monies they have raised. Following feedback from a recent SSE survey and from listening to parentsfeedback at parent teacher meetings, a three-part Study Skills Workshop has been organised for parents and students through our local Education Centre. Motivation is the focus of workshop two which was key area in your feedbackThis workshop is not exclusive to our school. It is open to all post primary school parents, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Our Guidance Department will also begin the 6th years Study Skills refresher sessions this week, while our SPHE teachers will complete a follow up Study Skills lesson with 3rd year students.

Our Mocks begin in three weeks’ time (January the 30th and run for two weeks) and are an excellent way of helping students to identify areas they should focus their learning on in preparation for the real exam. They can also help to build students' confidence. They are a milestone in the students' preparation for the State Exams and provide an objective record of their progress at that point.

Please read the information below, which gives an outline of topics and tactics covered in the online workshops.

Matters to be discussed: The Anti-Vaping campaign, to take place during the Healthy Lifestyles month of January, is to be raised with Mrs Murphy. The Anti-Vaping Campaign ideas: posters in bathrooms, ask Science teachers and SPHE teachers to discuss the dangers of vaping, have a relevant Powerpoint or documentary for teachers to show during the week, investigate introducing vaping detectors in the student bathrooms, have senior students involve junior students with information about why not to vape using engaging activities.
