Parent and Guardian Update - Semester 2: Week 9: Friday 2 February 2024

Dear parents and guardians,

It has been a whirlwind four weeks of school between the musical, the mocks, Classroom Based Assessments for 2nd Years and Task interviews for 5th and 6th Year LCA.  So St Brigid's Bank holiday on Monday is a chance for students to sleep in and rest up.

Musical
The musical received great reviews all around and was a wonderful experience for students, the team behind it and all of the spectators.  Thanks again to all of the families who supported this event.

Mocks
The exams have run very smoothly so far for our 3rd and 6th Years, thanks to Shirley Hayden for all of the organisation of the exams.  One more week to go, best of luck to our exam years.

Jack McGowan (1st year) - Laura Lynn
Jack has been on a mission to grow is hair out long enough to donate it to The Little Princess Trust via Love Locks for Laura Lynn.  It all began a few years ago, during the Covid lockdown. Just after watching a news report of how hard charities where finding the covid lockdowns & the impact it had on them, he decided to help out Laura Lynn.  He has shown such dedication  in his quest to reach his goal and now his hair is now over the required 12 inches. The big chop is planned for today at 2.30pm, he will send on the video.  His family have also set up a donation page you can find here https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/JackMcGowan.   Do support Jack if you can!

Jack O'Connor (TY) - Garda Youth Awards

Congratulations to Jack O’Connor, who was presented with a Meath Garda Youth Award in the Ardboyne Hotel recently. Jack was one of an elite group of young people honoured with such an award based on his effort, engagement, commitment and spirit, especially in the area of Athletics.  He was nominated by the school and won!

A citation was read before Jack was invited to the stage to receive his award describing him as bright, funny, strong and determined. Jack was praised for how hard he has fought to reach his potential and establish himself in the world of Athletics, both with his local Father Murphy’s A.C for the past ten years and more recently with Team Ireland.

In 2023 Jack returned home from the European Games in the Czech Republic with four medals. He placed first winning gold medals in the Junior competition for Shot Putt, Discus and Javelin and in the senior competition, something he only entered to gain experience, he incredibly managed to win the bronze medal for the Discus.

The citation continued to praise Jack, “It is without doubt that Jack’s success is down to him and him alone,” the Garda Representative said from the stage, “training four nights a week and still keeping time to complete his academic studies in Athboy Community School. We believe that Jack’s long term goal is to compete in the Paralympics in 2028 and we have no doubt his will be achieved.”

Jack was announced as the winner of the Garda Youth Award for the Kells district. He was represented on the night by Kells Gardaí, his parents Aisling and Ronan, his grandparents and Tony Magner representing us (also author of this article!).  Photos to follow.

Protocols for Leaving Early

We are currently  looking at issues around students arriving late - 123 students last week arrived late to school.  After midterm break, students who arrive late to school twice in a week will get a lunchtime detention.

We are also looking at the issue of students leaving school early. We had 104 students collected last week by parents/family.

As a result we have drafted some clear guidelines around leaving school early which we will provide to you shortly.

The purpose of this policy is to safeguard students and to flag issues where students are leaving school to avoid class/due to anxiety/due to worries of some sort or in order to meet up with other pals who have left school too (all of which are real life examples of what has occurred in the past few weeks).

The main features of this policy will be as follows:

Leaving Early for an Appointment

  • Parents/Guardians must send in a request on the app to have a student leave early for an appointment
  • Year Heads will approve the request on the app and Jackie will then sign a student out.
  • Year Heads will check with parents/guardians if there are any patterns around attendance or possible issues around a student wishing to leave early
  • Parents/guardians should not arrive at the school without sending in a request
  • Appointments during school time should be exceptional, such as, seeing a specialist for whom there is a waiting list etc...
  • All dental and medical appointment should be made for after school or Friday afternoons where at all possible
  • Students should not be removed from school to babysit, for their birthdays, to go to concerts etc...

Where a student gets sick during the school day

  • Students are not permitted to use a mobile phone to contact a parent/guardian to request to go home, this must go through the school office so that we know where students are at all times
  • If your child contacts you to go home, inform them that they have to go to the office immediately first, otherwise we have no idea where students are gone to
  • Students who feel unwell are checked by Lena and the school will ring home if a student has a temperature or is presenting with symptoms to consult with the parent/guardian.
  • If a student needs to go home, they must be collected by a family member who is over 18 years old or a nominated adult neighbour or family friend
  • Students who are unwell before leaving home should be kept home, especially if Covid like symptoms are evident.

LCA Interviews

We had a busy three days of LCA Task Interviews this week all of which have gone really, thanks to Grace Quinn, the LCA Coordinator in getting students ready for these interviews.

TYs Work Experience
TYs had a week out for Work Experience, they will be back next week.  Great feedback from employers which is great to get.

TY/LCA/TLC Info Evening for Parents/Guardians
We have invited parents/guardians and students of 3rd Year and TY to an Information Evening on Wednesday 7 February.  Due to confirmation in O'Growney NS we had to change from the original date of Thursday 8 February.   It will be preceded by a meeting for Third Years who are going on the trip to Berlin in April at 6.30pm.  the TY session will be at 7.15 - 7.30pm.  We will then showcase the LCA and traditional Leaving Cert programmes.  We are encouraging students to do TY where possible, as it is so beneficial in terms of both student wellbeing and attainment in the Leaving Cert so do consider that route.  There are some students for whom LCA is the best route but within that grouping, some students would benefit from TY first.

Have a lovely long weekend!

Regards,
Clare

Uniform Survey for TY Parents/Guardians
Created : 31 Jan 2024, 7:54 PM
Archived : 31 Mar 2024, 12:00 AM

Dear parents and guardians,

We surveyed parents and students about the uniform recently as you know.

Only 10% of parents and 15% students voted to retain the girls grey trousers so we are looking at a change.

We have changed the trousers for new First Years to a navy trousers for all students.  The supplier of the grey pinstriped girls' trousers will not be making this product anymore as a result.  There will only be whatever is in stock in the shops available.

For this reason it makes sense to consider the uniform for TYs/Fifth Years as a whole.

I have sourced items that will make the cost of replacing items cheaper but I realise that some students may not need any new items for September.  They will not need to buy anything new.

For those who need new trousers, the navy trousers will be much cheaper than the current trousers and can also be bought in any shop.

I do not wish to cause any additional expense for any families.

Please complete the following survey by Friday so we can get your voice on this.

Please note:

Your child can still wear their current uniform next year even if the majority vote is to change it.

Thanks in advance,

Clare

Dear Parent/Guardians,

We have changed the uniform for incoming First Years.  This has had a knock-on effect unexpectedly.

We have changed the girls' trousers for new First Years to a navy trousers and so the supplier of the grey pinstriped girls' trousers will not be making this product.  There will only be whatever is in stock in the shops available.

For this reason it makes sense to consider the uniform for TYs/Fifth Years as a whole.

I have sourced items that will make the cost of replacing items cheaper but I realise that some students may not need any new items for September so I want to see if many are in this situation.

I do not wish to cause any additional expense for any families.  Your child can still wear this year's uniform even if the vote is to change it.

Please complete the following survey by Friday so we can get your voice on this.

St. Brigid's Day
Created : 29 Jan 2024, 1:58 PM
Archived : 31 Mar 2024, 12:00 AM

February 1st marks St. Brigid's Day and the first day of Spring. Brigid of Kildare is one of three patron saints of Ireland, the other two being St. Patrick and St. Columba. Brigid devoted her life to helping the poor and caring for others. She is the patroness of many things including; midwives, newborn's and many more.

Brigid you were a woman of peace,
You brought harmony where there was conflict.
You brought light into the darkness.
You brought hope to the downcast.
May the mantle of your peace
Cover those who are troubled and anxious,
And may peace be firmly rooted
In our hearts and in our world.
