An Tánaiste, Mr. Micheál Martin's visit to Pres.
Created : 24 Apr 2023, 3:44 PM
Archived : 24 Jun 2023, 12:00 AM

History Matters..

The History Department was delighted to welcome An Tanaiste, Mr. Micheal Martin last Friday morning to lead a lively discussion on the importance of history both in our classrooms and beyond.

Mr. Martin was greeted by our Head Boy Jack Kingston and his Deputy Reuben Skuse along with Rory O’Shaughnessy and Frankie Og Sheahan, captains of our winning Senior and Junior Rugby Teams respectively.  Junior Members of our Student Council body - Matthew Riordan, Alex Roche, Daniel Mellerick, Charly Garcin-O’Mahony, James Randles, Darragh O’Mahony and Bobby Waters were on hand to chaperone Mr. Martin from the Dan Donovan Theatre to his date with the Student Podcast Crew and onwards to meet staff in the Staffroom. Before Mr. Martin left he was very happy to stand in for photographs with staff and students and a very special selfie with 3rd Year Pupil Adam Swihart.

Photographers for the occasion were students Ivo Kok and Darach Fanning who did an excellent job capturing a wonderful selection of pictures in a very discreet and professional manner.

In 2016, Mr. Martin delivered a keynote speech in Pres to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising. On that occasion, Mr. Martin delivered a poignant and thought provoking speech on the importance of acknowledging our past while simultaneously not being constrained by it. The theme of the discussion on this occasion was how important history is to the present and future and to acknowledge and promote its place within the classroom but more importantly to acknowledge the significant life skills which can be nurtured by exploring our past and its influence in our present and future. It was very fitting to welcome Mr. Martin to our school in the light of the Decade of Centenary Commemorations drawing to a close as well as marking the 25th Anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr. Martin spoke about his own past and how he was surrounded by books and story telling and how a curiosity about the past was always encouraged. After college he became a secondary school history teacher and never saw a political career emerging. However it was his interest in the complex history of Northern Ireland which led him to a career in politics. While our discussion in the Dan Donovan Theatre ( indeed a very important part of Pres history) left party politics on the sideline, Mr. Martin described vividly how the life skills we all need can be learned by paying close attention to the people and events in our past from family and community circles to the international stage. He spoke of the need to look at history from the context of its time and not to judge the past by the standards of the present. He described encounters with Unionists in the North and of how important it is to listen and try to see the perspectives of others. He spoke of the wisdom and diplomacy of George Mitchell in his dealings both in the North and in the Israeli Palestinian conflict. His passion and advocacy for the value of learning History were clear to see and indeed the lively discussion between pupils and Mr. Martin which ensued could still be ongoing were time not an issue!

Mr. Martin was whisked off to the Library where he joined the Student Podcasters Sam and Ronan who did themselves proud with their appropriate questions, some serious and some light. Again, were time not an issue, I’m sure Mr. Martin would still be there.  Mr. Martin then called into the Staffroom where he met teachers -  some new, some not so new and finally made his way to Social Area A where he presented a copy of his book “Freedom to Choose – Cork & Party Politics in Ireland 1918 – 1932” to the Principal Mr. David Barry. The Selfie moment was a lovely and light end to a very successful morning. We felt very privileged to have Mr. Martin to our school and we look forward to another visit in the not too distant future.

I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the visit a success. Thank you to Mr. Barry, Ms. O’Donoghue and Mr. O’Regan for supporting the visit, to all the pupils who were involved in the morning and to Mr. Jordan for his assistance in having the Theatre in perfect order for such a visit. Many thanks one and all.

Earth Hour 2023
Created : 23 Mar 2023, 12:18 PM
Archived : 23 May 2023, 12:00 AM

On Saturday 25th of March at 8.30pm, millions of people across the globe will unite to show they care about the future of our planet, by switching off lights for one hour.

It is one of the world’s biggest Environmental actions for Nature, Creation and climate across the world.

This annual event encourages people, parishes, schools, communities, and businesses to ‘turn off’ non-essential electric lights, for one hour, from 8.30 to 9.30 p.m as a symbol of commitment to the planet – and to help create a better world for the future.

Earth hour is the moment when local and global communities unite by switching off lights to show they care about the future of our planet - our one shared home.

Take time out to reflect on what nature means to you by joining Earth Hour 2023.

Earth hour is a time to ‘switch off’ from distractions & to focus on our World.

Please feel free to join in

The point of Earth Hour is not just to save energy for one hour; it's also a symbolic event that shows we can all make a difference in the fight against Climate change - and to help our World. Something that if we all work together, even small changes can make a big difference!

THANK YOU

TY Biology & Ag Science Trip to UCC

TY Biology and Agricultural Science students had a  wonderful tour at UCC today. A talk by Maria McNamara, Professor of Palaeontology,  and Frank Buckley,  Professor of Agricultural Science, at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at UCC was followed by a tour of the facilities (including labs and glasshouse).  We then went on a walking tour of UCC's internationally accredited arboretum.  A huge thanks to Dr. Barbara Doyle Prestwich and the team who hosted our trip and gave us a very interesting insight into the importance of plants in our lives.
